Jeff White on Dee’s F50 Connection in 2026

Featured Replies

A good listen. My takeaway is that if we can generate enoug clearances, more than the Dogs in 2025, then we don't need to improve goal assists and scores per inside 50.

Wheelo ratings has Melksham above Tracc and on the same amount of GA… 0.9 a game. So we should have two players in the top 20. Just a small note.

Also could be very niche and too hard to find/doesn’t exist, but I’d love to see the percentage of marks inside that V, versus outside for us.

Would be a great metric to compare with for the end of next year.

@WheeloRatings is there already a stat that shows something similar to this?

All White has done here has come in with a Sandra Sully comment... so that all of a sudden makes him a genius in your eyes?

We have all watched it happen with our own eyes and screaming for change 4 years straight now.

I like Jeff.. but he didnt tell us anything ground breaking at all to be honest.

he's been releasing stuff prior to this video.. he seems to have great insight and can unpack things for us punters. plus, he played at the highest level.. i'd argue no one has said anything ground-breaking about the Dees at this point. but what he has said in this video and in ruck-specific content before has been insightful and well worth the praise that he gets on here.

I am surprised Trac has such a high goal assist rating, and when I look at what just happened in the draft I see no surprises when you look at how Kingy wants to play the game (based on not just White's commentary but also Kingy's own pressers and statements).

Trac, Viney and Oliver are 3 of the worst kicks in the league. I have loved their grunt and ability to extract the ball but when you look at kicking efficiency Trac - 48.7%, Viney - 50.5% and Oliver - just out of the bottom 100 in the entire league at 55% they are actually really bad. So, given the salary cap room Trac and Oliver take up, Kingy must have been rubbing his hands together that they wanted to leave.

To play a game style like Geelong, you need to be able to intercept and you need to be able to kick. You can't spot up a target in the forward 50 if you can't hit the side of a barn, you either need a man mountain to target the ball somewhere near or get it in low and generate chaos at ground level. So, we are clearly going to sacrifice some of our clearance game for better ball use. This could also mean Viney moving to a forward pocket because as much as he is heart and soul, he is a shocking kick. He can tackle like an absolute machine though and strangely, he is also quite a good set shot.

So, I am expecting that both selections in the draft have good kicking efficiency and I expect that we are going to need Lever, Disco, Petty (and mybe Maysie) to be at the top of their intercept game. I don't think the addition of Matt Scarlett is an accident either, defensive positioning for both intercept support and exiting the D50 in numbers will be critical. If we don't win a ton of clearance and we can't intercept effectively there won't be a lot of opportunity for fancy kicks into the F50.

I liked Jeff’s analysis and his related reasoning as to why King as MFC coach is a really good thing.

I think hearing things such as Fritta training higher up the ground, our likely draft kids, our recent draft pickups (XL and Harvey), are a sign that we’ve been looking to implement Jeff’s point for a year or two, we just needed better users of the ball.

Losing Bradshaw, Nibbler and now Trac has crueled us in this area for years.

Excited by what King can do to remedy this.

For those that watch training, do we practice pulling the kick at the last minute much? I see this happen sometime from set plays (a player pretends to be lining up for goal when at the top of their range) but not so much in general play. I think this is what makes players like Miers so dangerous as he ends up kicking it where the defender's aren't expecting.

Obviously takes a lot of synergy between the forward and the kicker, good awareness and skills from the kicker and movement from all forwards.... but it all comes with practice surely. Do we practice it?

We practiced this weekly at the Rams in the 1980's. Only problem was that I kept kicking it into the hotdog stand. No doubt I was pulling something.

My heart skipped a beat when I read the first training report saying they had the team kicking for goal....... With no trick shots from the boundary.

Our accuracy in general at kicking for goal has been horrible and costed us loads of critical games.

Really hoping they clean this aspect up.

Tracc has had the yips for years

Not marks, but I have looked at the proportion of set shots taken from inside 45 degrees and Melbourne ranked 14th this season, which is an improvement from 17th/18th the prior four seasons.

Oh awesome, thank you!

Right ok, not really surprising that we average last, but it does surprise me that all 4 premierships sides since 21 are in the bottom 8!!!

Interesting read and thanks again
