Cameron Nairn

Trust us to chose a guy who doesn't already have his own thread, how inconvenient

Where does he go? Nairn is shaping as an early call and is in the sights of Melbourne with its top-10 selections. Other clubs in the teens, such as the Giants and Crows, would also look at him if available.

From Cal Twomey.

Is it just me or did Cal link us to very few prospects in that list

Yeh not many. Robey, Taylor, Cumming, Farrow and Nairn. Mentioned Dove and Pickett but highlighted our picks are too early for them

A forward that moves and leads in the 50? Are you sure that fits the MFC style? 😜

Honestly there's a lot to like about him. Looks like he has a great pair of hands. Are we seeing a Gunston type?

Not many but it probably all depends on what happens before us. Looks like Grlj might have things a bit. If Richmond take him then it means a player we are keen on drops.

Also looks like bombers are going to take a defender- Taylor if Richmond take Grlj and Farrow if not.

Which will leave us with a two of Sharp,Farrow or Cumming out of that top group and also Nairm, Pickett and Dovaston. I’m hoping we work a way to get 3 of those 6.

Demonland: Did he choose Lachie Dovaston?

Me: No.

Demonland: Did he choose Sam Grjl?

Me: No.

Demonland: Then tell me.

Me: He chose Cameron Nairn. He'll be taking eleven marks and kicking three a week.

Demonland: [forced enthusiasm] Amazing! Were you pleased?

Me: When I heard it I was like, YES! LET'S GET IN THERE! YES!

He had Nairn at 25 and said Dees are considering him with their top 10s and if he doesn’t go there Giants and Hawks would consider him in the teens… so why is he at 25 then?

Cal’s rankings are meant to be his own view of the players’ abilities rather than a mock draft based on who each club will pick. That’ll come out early next week

Why would his view on their abilities change between October and November?? Surely there is an overlay of where he thinks they will land

Cal said on Gettable this morning that apparently multiple clubs have Nairn in that 12-15 pick range, so it seems that clubs may be rating him higher than the phantom drafts are

If so, we may have to bite the bullet at 8 if we want to snag him

Read the article mate. It's all in there.

It was a rhetorical question, I’m familiar with Cal’s articles and the sequence of the leading into the draft. Often if he thinks clubs are sniffing around a bolter (eg Robey) the player shoots up in his rankings so I was more scratching my head why Nairn was still outside top 20

It's a 'power rankings' exercise, not a mock draft. I'm not being facetious, but they're not one and the same; i.e., a particular club may recruit on needs rather than 'best available', which is also on explanation for why there can be a divergence between the too. Similarly, the power rankings can be based on Cal's view of form, independent of drafting expectations.

They think he goes a few picks after our early picks so this wouldn’t work

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

Who would have imagined, when the season kicked off early last month, that Melbourne would emerge from the opening six weeks with wins over both Queensland powerhouses? At the time, Gold Coast and Brisbane were the competition’s early pace-setters, the flavours of the month, and the prospect of the Demons toppling both within the course of a fortnight seemed remote. Yet here they are, banking those scalps alongside home victories over two traditional Victorian rivals and building a quietly impressive resume.
