Farewell Clayton Oliver

He is no Rhodes Scholar or Rocket Scientist, we all know that, he is just a country kid who can play football very well.

I donโ€™t expect much else from him.

He helped us win a flag and I will never forget that and at one stage he was my favourite Demon, but time moves on.

sorry red but It's that attitude that got the club into a mess in the first place

without stadards and expectations you have nothing

i hope kingy and the rest of the FD have higher expectations for the current playing group

Oh yesโ€ฆPert and Roffey stitched us up good and proper.

But for Clarry to still hold the Club in contempt, whilst being paid Top Shelf cash for the next 4 years, i find hard to swallow.

Adam Kingsley is about as 'no nonsense' as coaches get. Things might be cocky and rosey now, but after Oliver cops his first mega-spray, and it will happen, he is going to get a major wake up call. At some point it might actually sink in what a ride he had under Goodwin.

Absolute good riddance to what was a cancer to this footy club.

Took the absolute [censored] out of the footy club and it finally took someone as strong as Steven King to finally call him out and get rid of this germ.

I get the feeling it wasn't just Steven King. Buckley was saying OTC the other day that when he was interviewed for the job it was made clear that we were going to be moving players on.

The catalyst for that was Goodwin going. That was when the club finally decided to clean house.

What an ungrateful [censored]. Would be almost worthwhile seeing one of those famous Pickett shirt fronts again

Clarry was my favourite player & favourite character at the club but his unprofessional behaviour since 2023 has been been a disaster.

If he had any brains he would be ashamed of the way he has treated the Club and fans who gave him nothing but support.

King had a lot of guts to get rid of him something Goodwin shouldโ€™ve but didnโ€™t do.

They did try and get rid of him but Geelong offered peanuts

The penny dropped when the club realised he was only worth peanuts (that took 3 off seasons)

Pert shopped Oliver around at the end of the 2024 season and most here were convinced that Pert acted alone ... I always thought it was a FD & Board decision (which included Goodwin)

Pert, as the CEO, took the heat

But it goes back to the 2023 post season as well

Blame Goodwin? How about you blame the person responsible for his own actions (Oliver himself)

We are now paying him $700k per season for another 5 years to play elsewhere

Corrected ... 2024 not 2023

Loved him for what he was able to do and produce. Was slightly aware of some issues but the last few years have exposed how deeply those issues were entrenched.

Every time he speaks he makes the decision to move him on as the correct one.

Clayton isnโ€™t the only one with his head in the sand a few on this thread have their heads deeply in the sand and no doubt will post every half decent possession game he plays (never mind the possessions will not show a lack of 2 way run)

For the life of me canโ€™t understand how anyone can not understand the decision needed to be made and the lack of interest from other clubs highlights that

In fairness that said poster has a history of blaming all and sundry for players performance on and off field.

Itโ€™s never the player in that posters eyes

It should also be remembered that the large majority (here at least) didn't want Oliver traded to Geelong for peanuts at the end of 2024 (back then it might have been a late first rounder coming back but we were still up for a fair portion of his salary)

So the mob turned on Pert as if his actions were of the renegade type

"We want Oliver to stay, you can go Pert" ... and that's what actually happened

People have short memories

I'm by no means saying that Pert's time wasn't up, but he never acted alone

It's my belief that Goodwin wanted Oliver out but didn't get his wish

By the early rounds of 2025, Goodwin was benching Oliver - Old-school-style

Future 3rd tells anyone all they need to know about how much we wanted him gone and how much other clubs didnโ€™t want him in.

I don't take any notice of appraisals based on weird attachments to players

It's best to never play favourites nor have anyone in the gun (unfairly)

Oliver was once a great player and for the most part, well behaved

Then it all went pear-shaped

Hindsight tells us we should have taken the Geelong offer in the 2024 off season

But isn't hindsight a wonderful thing!

Will win the Brownlow this year ! (Didnโ€™t poll a single vote last year after 22 games ๐Ÿ˜‚)

Fixed it for you ....

Decisions were made before King arrived. Richardson, Green, Smith, Guerra, perhaps others on the board and in the FD. It was never just about Goodwin.

2024 Off season was the cats possibility I think?

AFAIK they never actually made an offer to the MFC, just indicated to Clayton they were happy to have himโ€ฆ on the cheap

You're right, it wasn't 2023

But 2023 was when the ugly mess kicked off. 11 weeks off with the Phantom hamstring injury, the incident with the training staff and rumours aplenty

I won't mention all the other incidents that happened in the 2023 off-season but there was plenty going on ... google helps

Explain this "Contempt" situation!??

Goodwin was always stuck between a rock and a hard place. I agree with you that he was probably onboard with the moves to shop Clarry around. But he could never admit to that publicly or even privately as it would have destroyed his relationship with Oliver in the eventuality that he ended up staying.

Yes bing, and that's why Goodwin was kept out of it

But regardless of what people thought about Pert (or Goodwin) I can't imagine Pert not consulting with Goodwin & the FD re shopping Oliver around

At the time, Goodwin said nothing either way, and there's your answer, right there

'No comment' can mean a lot

Yeah, but I think this is infantilising him to be honest. Itโ€™s akin to people saying CP is โ€˜influenced by his partner or his familyโ€™ which makes it out like he doesnโ€™t have the ability to make his own decisions.

Hardly anyone is a Rhodes scholar or rocket scientist, plenty of people from the country donโ€™t behave like this. Taking accountability for your own actions is a choice that builds character and builds maturity, itโ€™s not a matter of intelligence. Maturity for the most part is built by your actions, it isnโ€™t a thing that just happens โ€˜to youโ€™.

I know very intelligent people that have chaotic lives and less intelligent people that have their life completely sorted. The difference between them for the most part is the choices they make.

You are missing my point.

If he is not astute enough to know that he should be publicly thanking us, I am not criticising him for that.

Yep.

Look at the clubs that chased May.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourneโ€™s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last yearโ€™s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although itโ€™s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sundayโ€™s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to foolโ€™s gold.
