I'd say that Flanders had committed to joining the Saints for some time. He gave King the courtesy of a catchup, but his mind was made up.

Absolutely this.

Almost certainly we were never in it, and meeting with us and others was as much about pushing up his contract with St Kilda as anything.

(See also Windhager.)

None of these trades happen overnight, nor in a vacuum.

There were media reports linking Flanders to St Kilda as far back as June.

Watch them speed straight past us next year.

People can Criticise all they want, but they are building a solid list. Good young talent coming through whilst adding some much needed depth and experience.

Good on them i say.

You've gotta be kidding? Their list is BOG average. Outside of NWM, King and Sinclair (and the latter struggled as NMW took his gig), they've a very ordinary list. And now they've managed to bring in a bunch more inconsistent B graders on huge coin.

If they are BOG average then i would hate to know what ours is outside of Gawn and Kozzie.....

Watch them speed right past us to a ceiling of 8th position 😤

Ours has a much greater ceiling...

MUCH! the Saints have sold off any chance of a premiership for 5 signings totalling 28% of their Salary cap and none of them are All Australian standard players.

If the MFC did this we'd burn the joint down.

Yeah I disagree.

Imagine paying TDK 1.7 million dollars a season. This is what you do when you're so desperate to sign someone you overpay.

the guy has never in his career even been in the top 5 players in his own primary position.

Isn't this exactly the kind of numbers most on here are wanting to throw at Humphrey.. lol

Midfielders win finals. That's Humphrey's ceiling.

So the Saints wined and dined him with some top brass attending and I think I read somewhere we had a coffee meeting with him. Not sure if that’s right but if it is why did we not go all out and roll out the red carpet to get him.

Maybe we wanted him but not bad enough not sure what the play was here but having his former coach as our head coach did sfa

Unsure of whose idea. But apparently he’s the most country bloke there is and probably couldn’t give a stuff about being wined and dined.

I think we should have thrown as much as possible within reason at him, because I feel this year really sets us up or not. Plus it’s one of the only things we have going for us, without stable training facility and a bit of turbulence surrounding player movement.

My mate is friends with him and he mentioned the huge turn over as a huge reason he wasn’t sure on the club.

Nice deflection, now defend the point you're quoting. 1.7 million for TDK... thoughts?

Some fans wanting to spend big money on a player on a fan forum is not the same thing as a club literally signing a bloke who's not even in the top 5 in his own position in the league to the biggest deal in history for a ruckman by far.

He’s overpaid, by a mile. He’s earning as much as some of the best mids in the game, and really impacts very little games. Has never had AA jersey, maybe he will once Max puts the boots up but certainly won’t beat the likes of Max or Meek/Cherry etc.

I am not sure how much he’s worth, comparatively to other rucks, but he’s not the best, that’s certain. I’d argue he’s around the 800-1 mil.

What you reckon Teddy?

I think the reality is the saints are overpaying 5 b graders because like us they have nothing to sell but money at the moment.

It’s a landscape where players only want to go to contenders if they have the choice.

I think this has the potential to be the worst deal in AFL history. He’s clearly worse than Gawn, Grundy, Cameron, Jackson, Xerri and you could make an argument for others as well

If the MFC offered this deal there is no way anyone would be happy about it.

I think if we were serious enough re Flanders then Maxy would have made him some hand made furniture as a welcome gift.

Plenty here wanted Goodwin, Pert, Roffey etc gone, OK. Add to that the departure of a couple of assistants and a handful of players ... doesn't exactly reek of stable club.

Perhaps all necessary in the longer term, but it's inevitable that there'll be short-term pain when all that we have to sell is "a vision". The Age headline sums up what most outsiders are probably thinking: "What the hell is going on at the Demons?".

Personally if I'm looking at a career opportunity I would prefer an environment with new leadership as it presents opportunity to help shape the new environment. I don't think turnover is an accurate description as its not as though we have to keep replacing the same role - our previous coach was there for almost 10 years and the players that are moving on have been on our list for an average pf 7+ years.

Flanders is going to Melbourne. White wanted to go to St.Kilda because a deal couldn't be done he went to Melbourne. If Gold Coast want Petracca Flanders is a demon.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
