My father Admitted to me the other day, he was pro Buckley as our coach...

Is your last name Green, Smith or Richardson by chance?

I’m amazed at how quickly everyone has convinced themselves that Nathan Buckley is the best man for the job.

Outside of the Tassy job he hasn’t been mentioned as a possible coach in waiting.

I can’t recall him being mentioned on this site (maybe I missed it) as an option until Goody was sacked last week. The consensus was get the best up and comer for the job.

Oh well. I hope the board knows what its doing.

Roos:

"I think Melbourne is a different kettle of fish," he told the ABC AFL Daily podcast.

"I think they're way better than people are giving them credit for. If you get the right off-season moves, I'll go on the record, they could win a flag next year. Not the year after, they could win a flag next year.

"They've got 14-16 premiership players on their list right now. They won a premiership in 2021, they're not super old, so I think this is a different one."

"If I'm someone like a Nathan Buckley, I'm not taking this job to resurrect this team. I'm taking this job to win a premiership in the next two to three years," Roos said.

"That's the mandate, for me."

Buckley confirmed he was asked about the West Coke job but knocked it back.

i thought he spoke well regarding the job tonight on The Couch. Was very measured and respectful to Goodwin and the MFC recruitment process.

Spoke really well didn't he.

I reckon there is a bit to go under the bridge still. Clearly hes been approached already but something tells me it will be him asking more of the questions then the selection panel.

Did anyone see Chaplin address the team after the loss? (It’s on the demons app)

Bloody weird.

[censored] in their pockets in what seemed like a relatively sucking up kind of way? Not sure how to explain it.

They got praised for being last.

I also found his wording of “this is the path forward for you guys” extremely perplexing, like he already knows he’s leaving and has an exit plan.

Have a look at it, let me know if I looked into it too much?

He has already said he doesn't want the gig.

Yeh I get that, if you watch the video you’ll see what I mean. He’s talking like he won’t even be at the club in any capacity.

Lethal Leigh? 1990 @ Pies then Lions 3-peat?

MS Copilot

Only a few AFL head coaches have won premierships with multiple clubs, which is a rare and impressive achievement. Based on historical records, here are the confirmed examples:

🏆 Coaches Who Have Won Premierships at Two Different AFL Clubs

  1. Ron Barassi

    • Melbourne: 1960 (as player-coach)

    • Carlton: 1968, 1970

    • North Melbourne: 1975, 1977

  2. David Parkin

    • Hawthorn: 1978

    • Carlton: 1981, 1982, 1995

  3. Allan Jeans

    • St Kilda: 1966

    • Hawthorn: 1983, 1986, 1989

  4. Tom Hafey

    • Richmond: 1967, 1969, 1973, 1974

    • Collingwood: Took them to multiple Grand Finals but did not win a premiership there

  5. Mick Malthouse

    • West Coast: 1992, 1994

    • Collingwood: 2010

  6. Leigh Matthews

    • Collingwood: 1990

    • Brisbane Lions: 2001, 2002, 2003

  7. Malcolm Blight

    • Adelaide: 1997, 1998

    • (No premierships with other clubs as head coach)

  8. Denis Pagan

    • North Melbourne: 1996, 1999

    • (No premierships with Carlton)

From this list, the coaches who actually won premierships with two different clubs are:

  • Ron Barassi

  • David Parkin

  • Allan Jeans

  • Mick Malthouse

  • Leigh Matthews

Well Copilot let you down there champ because Norm Smith coached the Dee's to the 1960 flag as one of his six.

All I can say is that the last few years I've enjoyed his upbeat and very considered commentary on games, players and tactics that showed me he was still very much with his head in the game perhaps waiting for an opportunity.

I didn't consider him as an option but I was happy when he was mentioned.

He himself says he had a negative approach to other players and weaknesses that he changed at the end of his coaching to be more positive and to focus on what a player can bring rather than what they can't.

I saw a clip of Paul Roos saying our list is no where near as bad as it seems

He compared us to the Pies before McRae took over and he said if he was Buckley he'd be taking over to win a flag in the next 2-3 years, not start over again

Sorry no link

I saw that and was actually pretty surprised because I read today that part of the reason Goodwin got moved on was for suggesting our current list was a year away from a premiership whereas the board believe the current window is closed and a slight backwards step for a reset may be required.

Forgot to mention..

But quickly the field has been reduced to Buckley and first-timers like Lions football boss Danny Daly and senior assistants like Hayden Skipworth and Daniel Giansiracusa.

Why is no-one talking about Stuart Dew? If we can't have The Ooze, let's look at Dew. He lifted the Suns from the bottom to mid-table as his player list was plundered. He was recommended by Roos before Roos left, but the Suns grabbed him first, leaving the door open for Goodie. Dew joined the Lions last year as the skills coach and THE LIONS WON THE FLAG. Just sayin' ... Dew is still skills coach for the Lions (don't we need more of that?). From 2018 the Suns went 17, 18, 14, 16, 12. We stole Steven May in 2017 and the Suns lost Adam Saad and Gary Ablett for 2018, Callum Ah Chee in 2019, Izak Rankine in 2022, Mabior Chol in 2023. I'm not saying they would have made a premiership team if they had all stayed (Ablett only had one more year in him), but the Suns would have been better than 12th.

With all dew respect, he knocked us back for the Suns job and they were not singing his praises at the end.

Buckleys chance I suspect.

It's been suggested [on Demonland, where we all source our stories with our other eye on Big footy] that there have been unofficial conversations.

13 minutes ago, whatwhat say what said:

he wants it, clearly, and is happy to go through the process

Jordan was basically describing Buckley as the man for the job when he was talking “hard edge…”.

Recall 15-20 years ago when 'tapping up' (ie: having early conversations) was seen as unethical/problematic, and now it's de rigueur and just a normal part of everyday society in terms of gathering data, understanding peoples positions and their current landscape, so you can make an informed decision.

It began with players, and the collective AFL fandom base shock at how on earth NRL players could sign contracts with alternate clubs and still play out the season fully invested in their current team. It has now understandably, shifted to the wider FD.

To paraphrase Brene Brown - 'being clear, is being kind'. And that works well in a business sense, when the industry is effectively closed off and in a bubble.

SG would have understood this having been in the industry for 3 decades, and not suprised that other coaches have been spoken to our sounded out..

Doing the Podcast at the moment. Anyone got some bullet points? Thanks in advance.

It reminds me of Paul Roos before he took the job but bucks excitement is a little more obvious and he’s not as good an actor

I’d be pretty shocked if he wasn’t our senior coach next year

Just because Caroline Wilson hasn’t reported that a panel has been formed which includes a  ‘respected ex player’ doesn’t mean a ‘process’ hasn’t occurred /is underway.

Just like player punch-ons at steak restaurants, some things are best kept under wraps.

So you agree that some sort of ‘process’ should occur?

I don’t really know what to tell you - good governance is good governance - you may not run the ‘proven’ (whatever that entails) coaches through the cog and psyche tests but you have some form of structure so that you give yourselves the best opportunity to find the person your organisation can get behind.

And a big part of that is the effing process for how you hired the bloke!

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
