I'd have no intention of not honouring his contract. I'd simply pay him off in a negotiated settlement. Thats honourable is it not.

I'd dispute its a waste of money as I rate TIME ahead of coin. The usable time we have with players is far more constrained than $$ Thats my opinion granted. I'd rather 'waste' money than talent.

Culture is an interesting direction. I see us currently as impotent. The culture is that of accepting mediocrity as the norm. What exactly is the MFC when it fronts TWO CEOs to a Meeting. Seriously if that's not a joke then nothing is. Thats amateur hour whether you like it or not.

I could give a rats whether players like him, want him or otherwise. His job is the Senior Coach. That's akin to a parent. Not their best bud !! All have a 'role' at a club. Change in and of itself is not sufficient. Changing one stuffed tyre for another doesn't really accomplish much other than allowing you to say, well, 'i changed the tyre' !!

Not all agree and I'm ok with that, but the results on the field ultimately reflect those in charge and most poignantly the one in charge of the others in charge ( so to speak )

If you're missing goals then someone needs to address techniques , skills and mindsets. All roads lead back to the HC .. can be no one else

Game Style... that's the Coach.

Selection. No one is EVER going to convince me the HC doesn't have the last word. Everyone else provides input... not decision.

There is substance to the idea that better help might benefit. I think it's way past this. The deckchairs have been mucked around with considerably and a number of issues have presented. We don't have the best assistants and Goodwin is very slow to change. Worse still seems ineffective in getting change to work.

This brings me back to Time. We don't have infinite time. We need to do things not only better than WE do currently but better than our competitors. In the vernacular were just playing catch-up-footy. ... but we're not. We're falling further and further behind.

If we are to talk of honouring things. How about we honour the pact with those who barrack and support the MFC ? How about we do the very level best for them/us.

Simon is but a cog in a machine. That cog is worn and slipping. You're not doing any favours to the ones who are owed the greatest by not fixing the problem. Sometimes problems cost money. Not a waste if you can get the machine working properly again I would think.

That explains it way better than I could bb. Thank you.

All of that is fine if the Coach is the problem and then everything is fixed.

I haven't been convinced that view is correct yet.

If we had kicked straight, we would have won several more games and might be in the eight right now. Is that his fault?

We have changed to a new game plan and that seems to be coming along. That takes time.

It could be up to a million dollars, I would guess, to move him on, can we afford that?

Would a new Coach immediately make us better?

Would we be changing game plans again and that takes time?

Do the players want a new Coach?

You and I don't know the answers to the above, so we will see what some who might, do about it.

It is easy to go off half cocked and regret it later.

I think Development, Recruiting and Assistant Coaching needs improvement and they have more impact than just the head Coach.

Even easier to do nothing.

Why don't we do a lot of things that aren't particularly hard ?

Why do other teams manage these things ?

You're probably quite correct... it's not just the coach. He is part of it though.

As to " it's coming along " ... sorry what league are you watching Red ? We're almost competitive for 1 or 2 quarters.. then the opposition adjusts.

But ... easier to do nothing and wait.... wait... wait..

Eventually We're totally dead in the water.... if only we'd done something sooner.

Let's waste another year...

Well, we'll see at end of 26.

Hope I'm wrong.

Tell the Truth on the REVIEW I am sure we havent been also how can the new CEO make a judgement when he hasnt even started yet

I didn’t say we should do nothing.

I was simply talking about whether it’s all the Coach’s fault and should we burn possibly close to a million dollars, or examine what else can be improved.

I think we need to examine all the parts unemotionally, which I am not convinced you are suggesting, then do what is needed to get success.

I agree with you Red.

But wasn’t all that done last during the offseason??

Sadly, obviously not a great deal. The MFC is worse than last year…

Hope that wasn't expensive...otherwise talk about burning money.

You have to wonder what really was the brief.

Results to date... ???

I suppose we have to wait till season's end. Apparently the results this year on top of recent which spell out T.. R ..E.. N.. D just aren't convincing enough.

I hope we don't look back in Spike Milliganesque manner... if you know the Tombstone quote ... you'll understand.

Another review ?.. the last one obviously failed.

Believe it or ot i have Zilch emotion regarding the coach, football team and football department.

My thinkings are essentially clinical. My background is pred Engineering. I tend to look at things very matter of factly.

But this is somewhat moot as Goodwin will more than likely coach us in 26.

Mores the pity.

From last year's Annual Report: "An external governance review has provided clear recommendations for the future, including the establishment of a High-Performance Committee and a Member Engagement Committee. These initiatives will strengthen our leadership......"

Well the future has arrived and we are 5 and 11, with two 5 match losing streaks (High Peformance?). Our membership base is down 8000 on last year (member Engagement?). Did these two comittees ever get formed? What have they done? Do we wait for next years annual report to advise us what they did?

Scary isn’t it, there’s not much going well for the club.

Wondering what will change and when, because something has got to give.

Before anything can happen there needs to be a plan. This should have been in place once the last one finished, but I guess the next one waits until the heads are in place. This was the last one:

The Melbourne Football Club's strategic plan, spanning from 2020 to 2023, aimed for consistent AFL and AFLW finals appearances, with the ambition of winning at least one premiership in each competition within that timeframe. Off the field, the plan focused on financial stability, aiming to eliminate debt, achieve a combined $4 million profit over four years, and accumulate over $30 million in income-producing assets. Additionally, the club aimed to grow its membership base to 75,000, average 50,000+ in home game crowds at the MCG, and complete its high-performance facility at Casey Fields while initiating construction of a new club headquarters near the MCG.

Provides direction, purpose, and is measurable. It’s clear to all what the boards directives are and where they want to. It should have been refreshed after 2022 off the back of the premiership and in preparation for the last ones end.

Without a direction or plan can you make any decisions on the clubs future or the people tasked with taking it there?

What's the fix on-field or off-field?

Logically off-field gets a natural boost if what happens on the field improves. So with that in mind I would have us look at would be to move on from Alan RIchardson, and at the same time look to improve our team of assistants. Jones can stay but he should be doing an apprenticeship not be in charge of the midfield. I would move Chaplin back to defence and maybe just maybe we can get someone who was actually a forward and knows the craft to be in charge of the forward line. I would also say thank you and goodbye to Mark Williams, our skills are deplorable and I just can't help but feel a new voice is needed there.

It all reads like an episode of Yes Minister..

The new CEO arrives and once ensconced and starts peeling away the fabric of disguise starts to understand the nature of the Pup he's been sold.

In a fit of pique he summons all dept heads to a meeting and outlines the intended 'changes' .

As they all leave Guerra's 2ic approaches.... Appleby quietly confers ... " most impressive Sir... such actions would be very courageous "

Appleby leaves with a wry knowing look of content.

Guerra slumps on his desk in despair

W T F did I do coming here !!!

This all just feels like valuable planning time wasted right now waiting for the new CEO to come in. As much as I'd like to think he's spending his spare time taking notes and making mindmaps in a Zoho notebook it would be much better if they were in now.

This is the definition of a state of flux.

The main changes I would make would be to send off Radford/Jones and recruit a genuine, experienced midfield and tactics coach. We really appointed these two out of necessity as no other assistant coach was available IMO.

With the cap, left over I'm recruiting a new goal kicking and skills coach, leaving Choco as just a dev coach.

I think it’s incredibly difficult to find a coach that was not only a brilliant player, but has the ability to teach the right way to instill what they’re after. I think Jones is probably a little bit too much of a mate to the group and they should go for an outsider who has that distance.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
