Good to see Goodwin finally comment in the media about an onfield incident

MELBOURNE coach Simon Goodwin says forward Jake Melksham was contesting the ball and executing a football act when he nudged West Coast star Jeremy McGovern into a contest that ended with two players suffering concussion.

McGovern and Demons forward Harrison Petty were both sidelined after half-time and placed in concussion protocols as a result of the incident in the second quarter, which will likely draw Match Review scrutiny.

And he rightly shines the light on Gibney that caused Petty's concussion.

Dare I say it was actually a very listenable presser.

Didn't waver didn’t waffle and actually commenced a veiled attack on the ridiculous Melksham event.

Totally agree Simon. Should have been awarded to Milky .

( yes..was me who just said all that lol )

AFL REPORT by staff writers

In the second quarter at Optus Stadium, Melksham shoved West Coast's Jeremy McGovern in a marking contest and the Eagles defender was concussed as he collided with Demons tall, Harrison Petty.

The incident had some similarities to that earlier in the season in Richmond's game against St Kilda, which saw Tiger Rhyan Mansell cop a three-game ban.

However, despite the injury suffered by McGovern, the Match Review Officer has ruled Melksham has no case to answer and is free to play Hawthorn next week.

“With his eyes on the ball, Melksham makes contact with McGovern's back and simultaneously, Melksham makes contact with McGovern's foot as he positions himself to take the mark, resulting in McGovern being put off balance and his head making contact with Petty's back while Petty is contesting the mark," the AFL said in a statement.

"It was the view of the MRO that the contact from Melksham was not of a forceful nature and that having regard to all of the circumstances, it was not reasonably foreseeable that McGovern and Petty would make contact in the manner that occurred."

SACK WHOEVER WROTE THIS.

1. MELKSHAM DID NOT “SHOVE” MCGOVERN. HE FAIRLY USED HIS HIP TO BUMP MCGOVERN, CREATE SPACE AND MARKED THE FOOTY (WITHIN THE RULES)

  1. THERE IS NO SIMILARITY TO MANSELL INCIDENT AT ALL. MANSELL PUSHES HIS OPPONENT WITH BOTH HANDS INTO THE ONCOMING MARKING CONTEST.

WHO ARE STAFF WRITERS??? Incorrect inaccurate comments.

Ps. Logan Morris incident v Darcy Moore was more similar to the Mansell incident as he pushed Moore with both hands into the contest. Morris was surprisingly clear with no penalty !!

Well your 2nd point is wrong. Ginbey pushed Petty in the contest when he knew he wasn't going to impact. Petty is now concussed and there is apparently nothing to see? Ginbey who has done it before.

It's very similar to the mansel incident.

I really don't think ginbey had much impact on the collision

petty got to where he wanted and went up for the mark in pretty much where he wanted to be, and was collected from behind by mcgovern. Petty was vertical and not unbalanced before mcgovern collided.

Sure, ginbey had his hands in contact with petty but there was no actual push of any force that impacted petty. The collision with mcgovern was inevitable, with or without ginbey

just my 2c worth

I loved the steel in Goodwin's voice, would like to see more of this push back.

Yeah, to be fair I went back and looked at the footage from another angle and there wasn't much in the Ginbey push.

Wouldn't want that type of football act getting picked up as a free kick against by some other errant maggot in the future either

Having watched that umpire live, she does not understand how players legally use their bodies to control space in the field. In multiple contested actions she called free's where none were present for normal actions like the clear mark by Melks. .

Without knowing her background, I assume she has never played competitive game at a decent level.???

Have you seen the footage?

Gobsmacked as to how you could come to that conclusion

This is becoming more prevalent. There was a free paid to Viney last week for a perfectly legitimate spoil from Taranto. Was such a bad call.

And my 2 personal bug bears.

  1. Downfield frees. These have always been for a player getting hit AFTER disposing of the ball not during the action.

  2. Taking out the legs. This is the Adam Goodes rule who used to slide front on to a player in a dangerous motion. Now players (ANB did this regularly) will see a player on the ground and theatrically dive over them to get a free kick. BS

Often, those that haven't played the game struggle to get the nuance of these (generalisation I know)

Petty was pushed back off balance contributing to the collision.

This was done by a guy who did much worse earlier in the year and got away with it.

Goody who rarely mentions incidents, certainly highlighted this part of it, asking the media how did Petty contact McGovern?

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturday’s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFL’s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
