And yet they were 20 to 21 at the end bizzaro!

Out of curiosity

I know we now have two commentaries (Fox and Ch 7) and that Fox/Kayo is in 4k but do we have two camera or production teams

Thanks

They have separate graphics teams apparently as there's a lot of feedback on graphics covering scoreboards etc.

You wonder how the two networks deal with the ad break or lack thereof. Didn't notice whether Fox were still waiting for the notional ad break to complete before replaying/commenting on the goal.

Will be interesting to watch as the season develops

PS Thanks for the reference to NEP. Hadn't realised they were so ubiquitous. Made me wonder if by being so they are holding back the innovation that you might see if there were more players in the industry

They are basically a monopoly in live broadcast

The choice of shots and supers over them is dependent on production

Hence why c7 and fox will have different shots / gfx for the same telecast

Do people still like Huddo? I am not sure I rate him that highly anymore. Still better than BT though.

That’s a pretty low bar

Did the printer run out of ink for the Hawks jumper??

Nah, it’s their new range of White House wear.

I think Huddo is a great commentator…he wears his love of the game on his sleeve and is like your mad keen supporter, but one who is able to communicate what he is seeing, in ways well beyond any of us. I’m not worried that his knowledge of the game might not be perfect, as that’s why they have experts on hand to provide their expert comments.

👍 agreed.

Lowbar comment only refers to highlighted sentence re-better than BT.

With no football today this opening round is a fizzer even if no fault of the AFL

That is how it will feel for all free to air spectators.

No Saturday night AFL for us, a fizzer of a season.

I really don't get this. Surely the AFL want people watching their sport. Is it really that hard for channel 7 to make a profit from their accompanying ads on Saturday night? I mean if nowadays the scores usually look like those from the AFLW (and hence few ads during play) But they just aren't.

c7 have prioritised thursday night over saturday; better ratings, more ad revenue

compared to them, foxtel paid a fortune for the rights - they will throw even more of their weight around with daz n / saudi pif paying for the rights going forward

Perhaps, it is about getting us out on Saturday night to drink and gamble, together. At the moment those pursuits bring in the dollars from the advertisers, and in turn the AFL.

Gosh I hope the giants can win today.  With injuries though including no hogan it's going to be harder.

But please win

It's kinda frustrating knowing who to barrack for earlier in the season. Sure, I despise Collingwood and will cheer GWS today. But at the end of the year Collingwood might be games below the Giants and we're lamenting that the GWS defeat of Collingwood means they finish half a game ahead of us knocking us out of 2nd, 5th, 8th place etc

Still leaves it like now, having to wait from Friday for AFL. Barren for home stayers with no FTA on the Saturday.

So three games a week, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, or are we getting two Sunday matches FTA?

Nick Watson, Ginnivan, Macdonald with Sicily…

I say this as someone who isn’t too much younger than Sicily.. but I can’t stand this “younger generation” mob.

Hopefully Essendon bring them back down to earth because the media jerkiest is only just heating up, we haven’t even come close to the peak.

If we have an ordinary year again and they are back up there with Collingwood and/Or Carlton by mid season, I may have to stop watching and call it quits for 2025.

If Hawthorn play in the '25 grand final against Collingwood or Geelong I almost think I won't watch any of it!

You're telling me!  Was watching the game and enjoying the new dimension of rain before it fi ally clicked that I live down the road from the SCG and I rushed off to collect my newly wet washing 😅

I still remember decades ago holidaying in Tassie. We were probably down near Hobart watching the cricket from the 'G' on TV. It started to rain forcing players off the field. But funnily enough at the exact same second it started raining outside. Surely it's impossible but could the same rain cloud span 100s of kms? :)

exactly that - 3 games a week on fta

In a sports entertainment world, this is very likely. In an honest competition, I think we can be there.

Of course that is only for Victorian watchers.

I think (though could be wrong), NSW, SA, Queensland and WA, will get to watch their teams all season long on FTA, including Saturdays.

I suspect Collingwood will finish top 2 this year given their recruits and injured players returning, and therefore won’t finish lower than GWS.

I'd bet my life savings that the grand final won't be between North and West Coast and that Sydney and Brisbane won't be fighting it out for the wooden spoon. But, otherwise, there are surprises every year. It could easily turn out that we were better served by the actual results of this weekend.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
