The Legacy Series | Episode 3 | Noel McMahen

Premiership captain in 1955 and 1956 and MFC Team of the 20th Century member, Noel McMahen passed away in 2022 aged 95. This interview was recorded in 2020 before the club’s last premiership.

Noel was born three weeks after the club won its second flag so his lifetime spanned 11 of the club’s 13 VFL/AFL premierships.

Another great interview Noel was very self effacing regarding his football skills placing himself as a mid range player that had to get the very best out of himself but rated himself up there as a leader. Interesting about the ‘48 flag vs Bummers and their chances in the replay, very switched on for a man of his age, another Legend of the club. This is what more of our guys should aspire to achieve as a team.

I enjoyed that. He was before my time, but a famous name at our Club.

(Too bad about the terrible sub-titles. You’d think someone would have taken the time to get them right.)

I was sitting out the back listening so didn’t actually see them.😁

Just watched it. Congratulations to Mike Sheahan! - At least for the first half, getting anything out of Noel was like pulling teeth!

(And I don't know any of the history, but obviously he is not Norm Smith's biggest fan).

I met Noel at a couple of cricket club functions eight or nine years ago. Rather quiet character but quite imposing. Interestingly, he told me that he told people he played football for the Melbourne Cricket Club Football Club (as did a few others of the era)!

What I found odd is this was recorded in at least 2022, meaning so were the rest of the episodes.

Why have these episodes sat dormant until 2025?

I clearly recall Lou Richards complaining that Noel was notorious for belting Collingwood players whenever they played Melbourne.

Good on him 👏👏
