Molly O

shout it out …

"I just really loved the tackling"

That's what we like to hear!

Also good that she's already had a year out of school, so hopefully a bit better prepared for a move across.

Original draft picks: 10, 28, 46, 64.

Current draft picks: 2, 20, 46, 64.

That is a seriously good upgrade of 1st and 2nd round picks albeit we lost Lily Mithen.

Presumably we will use at least the first 3 picks as 46 should come in after bid matching.

Anyone know how many list spots we have?

Edit:  it seems #46 was traded out.  Still not a bad pick trade result.

A few more questons:

  • Does AFLW still have State based drafting?
  • If they do I assume our picks 20, 46 etc will become higher for Vic/National players, if i/state clubs pick a player from their State?

@Lucifers Hero no more started based drafting - it's a national draft this year.

And I think we also traded out pick 46 as part of the Mithen deal.

Many thanks.

I also thought 46 was gone but the AFL has it still with us.

I think they’ve left the AFLW trade tracker & draft order updates to the work experience kids. Errors all over the place, but 46 did go out in the trade. Think it’s the one pick we sent out that stayed with GC.

If I'm calculating correctly, assuming we retain all the remaining listed players from this season (not factoring a potential Paxy retirement), that's 27. Add back in A.Mackin and Hose from the inactive list and remove their replacements, D.Taylor and Hill, back to 27. Beasley presumably goes to the inactive list as 1 year post ACL will be mid-September. 26.

So 4 list spots, including 1 injury replacement. Potentially we sign D.Taylor back on.

The article on our website says 46 is gone. I doubt we'd get that wrong!

Flash Davey’s niece, Tatyana Perry is in the draft crop this year. Was into Dees because uncle Aaron was with us, tipped to go in the 25-40 range. In other drafts she’d probably be well in first rd contention, but this is an especially strong group. Speed and skill is Tatyana’s calling card, good by foot too:

It would be great to snaffle her at 20 if available!

Sarah Black's draft preview here:

https://www.afl.com.au/aflw/news/1263082/sarah-blacks-draft-late-mail-who-will-your-club-pick

Based on this:

Pick 2: Fish or O'Hehir (outside chance Painter - comparison is Bri Davey)

Pick 20: Linked to Grace Martin, a small utility (though after about 10, things seems variable so could be some surprises here)

I haven't seen any of these girls but hope we go with O"Hehir as we need a big, classy mid...

It's the one area where we get beaten up.

Agree O'Hehir looks to be that type we lack, and that all the best contenders have: tall, explosive, good kick, aerially sound.

Fish could add some real pace and athleticism to our midfield (also needed), but I'm not sure we should be adding yet another player around the 160cm mark, especially a light one even more easily pushed off the footy? Yet clearly she's a talent...

Types like Painter at 2 or Martin at 20 make sense to bolster our more contested mid depth. We're still one injury away from oblivion in that area.

The other major gaps to fill at some point would be an intercept defender and perhaps a back-up ruck to take Watt's place?

Sounds like a good year to be a Victorian club with a high pick as the draft goes national.... in theory. But I do wonder how difficult it will be to retain interstate players.

Meggs is keenest on Molly O'Hehir (strong reboudning defender) with pick 2, though Lu Painter (Bendigo Pioneers, tough utility) could be a smoky here.

The helmeted Sarah Poustie (indefatigable mid) at 20 looks a great fit for us, while Charlotte Brewer (at 64, if she's still available, will add nicely to our skilled running brigade).

We can't wait to hear who Todd selects tonight.  There is no doubt these players will add to our already dynamic group and we can expect a strong rebound in 2025.

Suns forced to match our Havana Harris bid.

Draft under way, so, @Demonland, amend thread title now?

We've taken Molly O with our first pick. She'll be great for us.

Fish is a Swan 😄

Georgie Brisbane didn't get as far as the Lions' first pick.

Molly O'Hehir and Maggie Mahony: they sound like a couple of Irish jigs!

A couple of home-grown Colleens to go with our wonderful cohort of imported ones!

Several draftees (mostly outside Vic) saying they picked up footy during Covid. Interesting.

  • Author

Summary so far:

OUT

Mithen, Pick 10, Pick 28, Pick 46

Watt (retired)

Madigan (delisted)

Hill (delisted inj. rep.)

A.Mackin (remains inactive - possibly indefinitely?)

IN

Pick 3 O'Hehir

Pick 21 Mahony

Pick 63 Dethridge

Hose (returns to active list)

Assuming Beasley is also inactive, that leaves two spots, to possibly retain Denby Taylor and add one more.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

For a brief period of time in the early afternoon of yesterday, the Casey Demons occupied top place on the Smithy’s VFL table. This was only made possible by virtue of the fact that the team was the only one in this crazy competition to have played twice and it’s 1½ wins gave it an unassailable lead on the other 20 teams, some of who had yet to play a game.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

In my all-time nightmare game, the team is so ill-disciplined that it concedes its first two goals with the courtesy of not one, but two, fifty metre penalties while opening its own scoring with four behinds in a row and losing a talented youngster with good decision-making skills and a lethal left foot kick, subbed off in the first quarter with what looks like a bad knee injury.

After a one-year reprieve, the Demons return down the freeway to Kardinia Park — the site of both one of our greatest triumphs and one of our darkest days — as they face the Cats under Friday night lights. This one could get ugly. Who comes in, and who comes out?
