I think if we want this kid we need St Kilda to suddenly get some Smillie love at their picks so Richmond stick to plan A.

That’s worth a thought … I’m sure it’s in the 1001 combos being worked through in the JT war room

If not Langford, then Draper or Allan or Tauru at 5 are options being talked about

Ahh... A new thing to worry about. Cool thanks for that needed something to get the anxiety back to where it normally is between Cal's phantom and draft night.

In that case who do you think we take? Cal suggests Lindsay or Berry assuming the Saints have already taken Travaglia.

It's hard to say and I know that will sound like I'm sitting on fence, but I just think this is the most uncertain first round in recent memory and there's so much dependent on who is taken in the preceding picks. I'd say Lindsay and Reid would be the likely picks IMO and based on what I'm hearing.

Very true, especially if Smith is also off the board.

Who says it will be a reach?? You, Deespenser? Bigfooty? Cal??  In the Tauru thread you have said not to reach for him at pick 5. Neither will be a reach if picked. They will be picked where JT ranks them. That's not a reach.

It's not a question of reach so much as best available.  One of Lalor, O'Sullivan, Smith, Langford and Tauru will be available at 5.  I don't think we will take Bo over any of those options.

What if JT ranks Allen the 5th best player??? It doesn't really matter what you think, you aren't doing the picking.

No one said you cant give your opinion, that's what this place is for. I like reading yours dazzle. i admit the original post to Willy Warrior  doesn't read like I wanted it to. Was more the only opinion on order that counts is JT.

My opinion is that we probably won't take Bo over the five options I listed.

We don't know what JT thinks, but there are multiple publications with inside knowledge that say that we will pick someone other than Allan at 5.

  • The Age's phantom, which was based on interviews with 13 recruiters, predicted we would pick Langford, and that "if not, O'Sullivan could easily be the pick here, while Smith and Tauru would be in the frame".
  • Cal predicted we would pick Langford, and said "If Langford goes to the Crows the pick ahead, then Alix Tauru looks the next leading contender for the Melbourne pick. They will also be able to wait to see if one of the other premium midfielders slides through, albeit unlikely".
  • Foxfooty has predicted we will take Tauru, stating "If North Melbourne takes Tauru at either Pick 2 or 4 (trade dependent), it’s likely two of Harvey Langford – who has long been linked to Melbourne – Finn O’Sullivan (less likely) or Sid Draper will be available for the Dees to select, with Langford seen as the more likely choice over Draper"

So we've been linked at pick 5 to Langford, Tauru, O'Sullivan and Smith.  Cal actually asked JT on gettable about melbourne's intentions at pick 5, and asked him if Lalor, Tauru, O'Sullivan and Langford were "right in the mix".  JT responded "absolutely, they are all qualiity players and add something different to our current list...all those names are definitely there".

Against that, there is nothing to link us to Allan at 5.  I haven't seen anything suggesting we are contemplating that.  The consensus seems to be that Allan goes later in round one, potentially at the Tiges (pick 6), St Kilda (picks 7 and 8) and us (pick 9).  Most seem him getting through to us at 9, and potentially beyond that.

If your point is that JT will pick whoever we rate at 5, that is fine, but unhelpful.  It is kind of like saying water is wet.  Its self evidently true, but adds nothing to a dicussion speculating on who we will pick.

If you think Bo is a genuine chance at pick 5, that's also fine, there just doesn't appear any basis for that.  We could still do it, but it would be a big surprise.

I think we've essentially got the development plan for Bo Allen already organised which is essentially to do what Trent Rivers has done, be a strong intercepting half back early and slowly transition into the midfield as he builds his fitness base.

I really like that all of the guys we're linked to are considered leaders, Langford is a co captain of his team, Bo Allen i believe captained W.A? just what we need when we've had some question marks on our culture, get some natural leaders in

so know one really knows who's going where and everyone is just throwing around the same 4-5 names for a pick at 5.

There are two real quesitons every draft (1) who do you like and (2) who will we pick?

 (1) is entirely subjective.  If you like Bo Allan, great.  If you like Harvey Langford, also great.  Either, way there is something enjoyable about sifting through videos and forming an opinion, particularly if you like some obscure player who goes on to be picked higher than expected, or goes on to become a jet.

(2) is more objective.  We will pick someone - so you're either right or you're wrong.  Its a little different but its fun to try and predict who will go where and see if you're right.

Either way, its about getting hyped for whoever the next generation is, both for your club and the AFL generally.  If that's not your jam, fine, but don't ruin it for other people by carrying on - just tune in on draft night if that's your view.

Good post and agree there’s nothing linking to us taking Allen at 5/6. But if Langford and Smith are off the board and Draper is still there, if we rate Tauru and Allen as the next two best players it might make sense to grab Allen first if we think it’s the best strategy to land both.
5- Allen

6-Smiley/Draper

7- Smiley/Draper

8- Travagila

9- Tauru

GWS did it last year to get two players they wanted later in the first round.

Hmmm. There is some logic to that. I'm increasingly thinking Tauru could get to our second pick, and Bo could go at 6, 7 or 8.

But it's a hell of a risk. Real chance neither are on the board at 9.

I think we pick whoever we rate more highly at 5 - probably Tauru - rather than trying to get too clever.

I would get this bloke if available at 9.

Can play back, can compete forward, can play through the middle, elite footy winning ability. Craft can come as he enters pro footy.

Anyway, we will find out soon enough

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
