I won’t speak for everyone, but the thing that irritates me most about Goody is not his deadpan delivery, it’s his persistent use of corporate-style word salad. I find it intensely annoying,

Then why watch it?

Listened to Greeny on the way in today being interviewed on 3AW. A tough listen in itself, despite the commendable job he’s done standing in as President.

When asked about Goodwin he replied with the standard rhetoric response “the players absolutely love Goody”.

That’s all great and everything, but im a little sick of hearing it after results like today. Maybe the playing group love Goody because he’s a little too much of a soft touch and lets them get away with a little too much?

I’ve never played at this level but what I knew while playing was the you should “respect” your coach, to the point that you feared them and constantly tried to gain their approval. I can’t say that i ever loved a coach but I did respect a coach enough to run through a brick wall for them.

I know the above is a generational thing, but this team has way too many players expecting to get selected the following week no matter what their performance is like.

I think Goody has at least a few games grace to demonstrate he still has the players.

on your point, the it’s true that you can be a leader whom the people love, but who they simultaneously don’t respect - which often comes from not making the tough calls.

It’s been a long time since I’ve watched a Goody press conference, but his more egregious examples do tend to pop up elsewhere - usually in the context of ‘wtf?’.

Let Goodwin see out the year. Then search through the best assistant’s and then make a decision.

I want the next great coach not the last. We need fresh ideas I think but although I’m cooling on Goodwin he deserves the year to see how he manages what’s proving a tough period.

While he might not be as rigid as Goodwin, Simpson is a big believer in the contested ball, forward half game style. Which makes me nervous.

Would rather just look at the best assistants across the competition. The most exciting teams in the comp are all coached by guys who were just assistants before getting the big job. There's talent out there if you look for it.

Goodwin is in his 9th year as senior coach, but for all intents and purposes was the senior coach in Roos' last year, so arguably 10.

How long is too long to be subjected to the same voice ? There are exceptions to every rule, such as Sheedy and Chris Scott, but in my view he's had a good run. The message may be getting stale.

So much has happened since the premiership that it's hard not to think that the club and players needs a new voice.

It also needs some clean air. How good would some clean air be ?

I expect we'll get back on track at some point during this year, it may even be tomorrow night, but in my view it's time for a change. Reinvigoration won't be guaranteed, but for me, Goodwin has run his course.

I agree. With all the off-field nonsense that's gone on I think it shows this group could use a fresh start. It's probably not just Goodwin that needs to go but one of Oliver or Petracca too. Possibly both. There are so many players at the club who have been good citizens and worked hard only to watch the two biggest stars at the club make things all about them and despite their form these guys are still being prioritised above other players.

I sympathise with what Petracca went through last year but I do feel he's probably damaged a lot of his relationships at the club, as has Oliver. One thing Goodwin has always struggled with is managing the egos of his players.

Some clear air could completely revitalise the club as it did with Collingwood and GWS in recent times.

Im ok with that as long as we can see improvement doesn't have to necessarily mean wins.

But if these 10 goal floggings continue the club will have no choice unfortunately, the pressure will be unbearable.

Only issue is a payout. images.jpeg-10.jpg

Nup sorry, but after our capitulations of the last 3 years, incremental improvements aren't going to cut it. We need WINS and lots of them, otherwise the coaching future of Goodwin at MFC could be all but over.

I've been a Goodwin supporter but I'm coming around to this way of thinking. Ten years is a long time to lead an organisation.

I've read about a theory in organisational psychology that I think applies to our current predicament. Leaders can become personally invested in 'projects' they oversee. If a project the leader is invested in is underperforming, a leader may continue to support the project trying to make it a success rather than acknowledge failure. The more that has already been invested - and the more the success of the project is linked to the leader and their reputation - the more the leader continues to invest ('sunken cost' fallacy). Whereas, a new leader can view the organisation more objectively and be free to cease projects or cut staff when needed ("failures of the previous administration").

I wonder if the above explains Goodwin's slowness in previous seasons to adapting our once supreme game plan despite evidence we needed to. Also, while acknowledging Goodwin's relationship with the players has been a strength, I wonder what decisions a new coach - without close connection to the players - may make regarding senior players and would this be in our better interest?

I think he's got this year but without recognisable player buy-in and effective execution of a new game plan, I think there's an increasingly strong argument for a fresh face to be our next premiership coach.

Thinking of all the players currently well down on form:

Petracca

Viney

Oliver

Rivers

Petty

Lever

Fritsch

Salem

JVR

Gawn

That is literally our spine. And mostly mid to late 20s. All of those players would walk into the top 22 at any club in the top 8 and probably top 4.

If we can't compete for a top 8 spot with this playing group then you absolutely need to start looking at the coaching group. It's rare that a playing group doesn't "love" their coach.

We need the team to continue to work to implement the new game style that they’ve been working on for the past year, and recruiting for. We need to resist the pressure on Goody, trust that this evolution depends in part on our best 22 playing, especially those players, the quick and agile with good skills.

Pickett, Windsor and McVee are big outs, so Picket and Windsor back in are big ins.

Hold tough! Have faith in the team, the coach and their plan. This can turn quickly.

Absolutely.

Unfortunately, far too many in the modern world like an immediate fix or they get frustrated and want to blow everything up. The immediate fix is rarely how life works.

You might be right @picket fence but I just can't see Brad Green being the one to cull SG, only if it gets outta control and he gets the directive from Steven Smith.

What usually happens in this scenario is the new President normally brings in his own man, so I reckon Goody might see the year out.

If Goody goes, I reckon there might be a massive exodus of players who will use it as an excuse to bail eg. Kozzie, Tracc, Oliver etc.

Hope this doesn't happen but it will definitely be at play.

The Eagles were hit hard by injuries during COVID which was the worst time because every club's football department were gutted to cut costs, at the AFL's demand. We were the exact opposite and won the flag. They never recovered. Their biggest mistake was not having a first round pick for years on end... hardly Simpson's fault. He coached them to two Grand Finals including a flag against the Pies at the 'G in one of the all time greats. They were flying for pretty much all of the 2010s. He and his team squandered post COVID, sure, but it was timing more than anything that hurt them.

If this was to happen I would be stoked. I think Goodys time is up, I have never been a fan even when we won it it 2021. I think there are better candidates out there (Simpson/Longmire). I think the time is now for a change.

Ah yeah, I love how we can use injuries for other teams, but our injuries are considered making excuses for ourselves.

Again, it seems grass is always greener.

Read my post again. Having injuries during COVID seasons was the worst time to be hit. And I've never personally said our injuries at the moment aren't a reasonable excuse for our struggles.

You may not have, others have.

It's one set of rules for everyone else and not us, like we operate in a vacuum.

If we take Longmire I’m done. He’s finished as a top level coach. There’s a use by date on everything and he’s reached his. Football Director, sure but if we go for a new coach grab the best assistant available.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
