I didn’t go tonight. My mate who i go to most games with couldn’t go so I decided to stay home with the family and watch it on tv rather than go solo. Day games on my own are good but i don’t like night games so much. Does this make me a less hardcore supporter? sure. But i don’t give a [censored]. sport is meant to be fun not an obligation. I have enough [censored] going on in my life (as everyone does) without footy being one of them

Anyone feeling bad about the media BS just know that Pies Tigers etc have triple at least the fan base. i’m not talking just members. we should be proud to be demons supporters given our low fan base

I arrived in Melbourne on Thursday night and made it to the G tonight (wearing a second pair of pants under my red and blue match day pants).  Shivered alongside the rest of the Demon Army and headed home after helping pack up to watch our first Olympics Gold!

Double pants, now that's a good idea.

I just would have preferred to crack the 20k that's all. I don't blame people for having a life, there will come a day when I won't be able to go to every single game as I also believe life is a broad spectrum.

I went, but don’t begrudge those that didn’t. It was bitterly cold and wet all day in Melbourne. It’s a night game. Night games have no appeal for our supporter base, which is mostly older supporters. It was against GWS. No mutual fans interested. Train lines were down. About time the AFL looked at its scheduling. Saturday nights are for TV. It’s Rugby League territory. Saturday nights in the dead middle of winter between an interstate side is just yuck.

Also, hard to get kids to these night games. It’s too late. Saturday nights in the middle of winter are simply not family friendly.

I trust you attend all interstate matches. If not… what’s your excuse?

Or do you just ride your high horse to matches at the ‘G.

How about Marvel and Mordor… do they fall in the guilt-free zone?

Sorry WCW the interstate comparison is just plain unfair. In saying that of course supporters on here can’t attend for an array of good reasons - distance, illness, prior engagements etc etc.

I can also attest however that Doug Reemer does in fact attend games at Marvel and pork barrel stadium.

You deserve full accolades and respect for your passion and support for the club in all facets, but the question “Doug” asks, regardless of inferred sanctimonious sentiment is fair enough.

The attendance numbers on nights like tonight prove we have a fickle supporter base and that unfortunately is a fact.

I was there tonight and like Doug, would have loved if more were. However I appreciate factors such as, but not restricted to: weather, people travelling interstate or OS to avoid Winter, Olympics on TV,  economic situation, carpark shut, bad scheduling,  Covid, rsv, flu and other medical conditions etc prevent some people from attending. But good on you Doug for trying to rev up support for the Dees

People who couldn't attend, don't have to take Doug comments to heart.

At least the loss was less than a goal.

This exact day 28th July back in 1979, 45 years ago, I was at Waverley watching the Dees play Fitzroy in Rd17. Final Score: Fitz 36.22.238

Melb  6.12.48

Crowd VFLPrk 12,149

It shattered me but each year I return.

I'm sure those absent tonight will also return Doug.

Go Dees. I love 'em

The excuse for me is the old man's Melbourne gnome, he put's out when we win, got stolen and our season has gone to [censored] since. But i went regardless tonight.

Seriously WCW this is such a poor comment.

I attend all interstate games but for alice springs because it is too expensive and never miss a marvel game. But i would never ask that of most supporters.

What I do expect is that our fanbase shows up for a season defining home game at the G.

Don't defend our club for the sake of defending the club. We deserve ridicule for how poor the attendance was tonight.

Whtat is the excuse of the 50k so called members who didnt show up?

Not a poor comment at all. Just a poor attempt at making a point. Apologies.

My point is that the OP is demanding people attend games, but I gather not all games. Why does he feel entitled to guilt people out over not attending certain matches, ie. only the matches he attends?

Sheeeet, I’m probably no closer to explaining the point I’m trying to make. I’m soooo tired and cranky and I’m not even home yet.

I’m not putting anything on fellow-Dees fans. I don’t attend every match either. But even if I did, I wouldn’t come on here to guilt folks out.

Was there, but 5 minutes into the last I was not overly happy that we let the Giants simply waltz it out of the middle and put 4 quick ones through, only for to us ever so slowly grind our way back into it.

Good thing not too many were around me, i cant imagine me and my mate would’ve been great listening to, as we were going off at the umps and I was lambasting how I choose my priorities going through the “same [censored] different week”.

Goody a few years back said that hopefully our game style would be one that the fans would recognise and get behind. Well we recognise it alright, and going by the numbers tonight…………well let’s just say that there is a lot to be desired.

People vote with their feet, and I dare say Goody wouldn’t like hearing what the majority would seemingly have to say of where we as a club have gotten to under his tenure since 2021. 3 years is a long time in footy………..and the next 3 will be even longer if change does not occur.

My excuse is a declining passion for AFL.

This I can live with. NRL is fast becoming my preferred option of the two and a far better TV sport.

I will admit, since tasting the ultimate success in 2021, my hunger for AFL has seriously diminished.

Grass roots football is where my passions lie. AFL doesn’t even come close to it.

Agree really poor taste.

There's no point being elitist about it especially when the cost of living is so damn high that people can barely afford to take their family on a holiday let alone every single interstate football game, a lot of people have jobs and other commitments so it's a unrealistic comparison.

I'd have liked to see more fight from our fans tonight, even 10k more would have made a difference.

Oh dear. I’ve totally given the wrong impression. I’m not saying folks should attend every or any match. It’s the polar opposite. No one should be told to attend a game/s, but if someone is gonna so belligerently play the holier-than-thou card, they’d wanna make sure they’re covered.

Incidentally, I really don’t expect, nor want the “accolades and respect for (my) passion.” I choose to do what I do and I’d never question what other fans do.

Yep. It's the one thing NRL has always had over AFL.

@FearTheBeard and @Beetle

I hope I’ve explained myself sufficiently. I failed at making a point and I’ve come off as sanctimonious as the OP, probably more so. And now the door’s wide open for certain posters to jump all over it. One of them is already in and I’m sure the others will follow soon enough.

Not saying you would expect it, but the fact is every club is better for people like you, who show unwavering unconditional support.

That aside, I’m sure I can speak on “Doug’s” behalf in saying he isn’t playing a “holier than thou” card, he’s just passionate and wants to see more supporters at games.

Why wouldn’t he? 16k in this day and age for a prime time game is pathetic.

16k on a Sat night is embarrassing

And it’s why we’ll never be a ‘big’ club. Too many supporters aren’t tragics whose weekly highlight revolves around attending a footy game.

It’s the combative nature. The very title of the thread is accusatory. “Excuse” rather than “Reason” for starters. Who is he to put it on fans for not attending?

Anyways, ima moonwalk back outta this thread and pretend it never happened 🙃

I think you’ll find the title of this thread was fuelled by attending a must win game, with a few beers, lost by 2 points in front of a crowd of 16k people. Aka frustration.

Is that an excuse or a reason? 😉

Despite living in Bangkok and wimping out (as I have for every match this year) I still take out a premium membership so my seat was paid for

(I didn’t go because I had severe diarrhoea)

I've heard some [censored] in my time, but this seriously takes the the toilet brush.

I know I missed the game, and it’s a wild story. First off, my Range Rover decided to throw a tantrum and broke down in the middle of nowhere. I figured, “Why not make the most of it?” So, I grabbed my skis from the trunk (thankfully, I always keep them handy for such emergencies) and hit the nearby slopes instead.

As if that wasn’t enough, I got word that Jack Watts wasn’t playing. Without him, the game just isn’t the same. So, I found myself a cozy lodge, where I was greeted with a fantastic cheese board and a warm rug by the fireplace. Skiing, cheese, and comfort seemed like a pretty good trade-off at that point.

So, in summary: car drama, impromptu skiing, no Jack Watts, and the allure of a cheese board and warm rug by the fire. Quite the trifecta!

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
