Really?

Ask Richmond how they did it at the end of 2016, or Collingwood after the 2021 season.

Look out how we nailed the 2019 draft with Jackson, Pickett and Rivers and then Bowey and Ben Brown the following year.

It really can change quick smart if you absolutely nail your off season season with trades and draft.

Of course missing finals will offer a better draft hand.

But this was about trade / free agency. The most valuable currency for any trade is to be a desirable / destination club.

I’m not of the opinion that missing finals has any worthwhile upside at this stage

I disagree. I don’t think we owe Hunter anything. He wasn’t wanted at the Dogs and my reliable source tells me there’s been little change in his off field behaviour. Better to give Tholstrup more experience.

It’s not about ‘owing’ him anything. It’s recognition of a 200-game career for one of our players.

The fact that the Dogs didn’t want him has nothing whatsoever to do with this.

Can your reliable source elaborate on his current off-field issues? I have a couple of reliable sources who say they know nothing about this.

Even if he did have off-field issues (as other 200-gamers and even 300-gamers have had at some point), 200 games is 200 games.

I have no issues playing Hunter if he's earnt a recall, and whether he is on 199 games or 201 games shouldn't be part of the decision making, although I understand that sometimes those things are taken into consideration.

His form has been ordinary at best at Casey, and frankly I am not sure his calf can last a full game at Marvel.

I also wonder if we try and get Ben Brown up for round 24, given it will surely be his last game. I wouldn't be against it, but likewise if a win in round 24 means we make finals, I also totally understand why we wouldn't take that risk.

I made peace with the fact that there are no sentiments left in footy when Jonesy and Jetta missed out on the 2021 flag. We played the team we thought could win it, and we were right to do so.

Totally agree. I hope he is earning a spot and he does get to play his 200th but I understand entirely if this doesn’t happen.

I just took issue with the poster saying the Dogs didn’t want him and implying he currently has off-field concerns. Neither one of these has anything to do with him getting to play his 200th, even if true.

Ugh I’m having ‘nam flashbacks to 2022 when so many haters on here were p’d off that we were ‘nursing’ Melk to his 200th. Not comparing the two players and I know there’s no room for sentimentality in footy, but what’s the worst that could happen should Lachie be given a guernsey this week?

People say there's no room for sentimentality in footy and I am more of that thinking but I think there is a little room. Nothing is 100% black or white.

Normally I'd prefer to select on merit but if we bomb out completely then I wouldn't be opposed to some kind of farewell/200th.

As regards giving players a send-off game: the AFL is a ruthless business. At present it looks like our club has made a major stuff up in recruiting Billings, McAdam and Fullerton. Maybe Luker. And we have to 'carry' all three/four for another year. Hopefully they'll make me eat my words

Added to this we will have JS on our list for the foreseeable future (see W Rioli). With Gus, Spargs, BBB, Schache et al we've had well short of a full list all year. We need to make better choices. That's my take. Happy for youse all to give me a clip.

Well Smith is out of contract this year so we don't have to continue with him on our list for the foreseeable future?

Gus, Brown and Schache will all be off the list come next year so that will give us flexibility.

You do realise this is the tanking philosophy, right?

I think we can go hardcore and still not make it.

And if we do make it, our kids get finals exposure and we get a chance to win a final.

It's not tanking. Tanking has a specific definition.

I'm saying I'd rather finish outside the 8 and I think we'd be better off for it.

Lol it's fairly known around footy circles of Hunters off field issues. These issues have even filtered onto his time at the footy club.

The club will want to go all out and win this weekend to give themselves hope of a chance at finals.

With that mindset, you play your best team who are in form and Hunter is definitely not in form at all. I see Windsor could be in doubt this week, but even then I wouldn't select Hunter.

I think if we do lose this weekend and mathematically out of finals reach I think they'll give him a send off game against Collingwood perhaps.

By then you might even see retirement announcements from the likes of Hunter and Ben Brown.

Question: Milkshake currently on our rookie list, I think.  If he gets a contract (hope so) does he take a spot?

I swear Tom Morris lives rent free in hospital dumpsters.

I think we need to call it out for what it is - he's squatting in hospital dumpsters. And this takes on a double meaning after his morning coffee.

If he accepts, then yes he can remain on the rookie list.

It's an interesting space he finds himself being on the rookie list. When you're on the rookie list you're on a fairly reduced salary and I do wonder how that would affect his current family life with 3 kids etc.

Though he's running a fitness business with Trent and Brooke Cotchin so I think he's doing well anyway.

You’d also imagine that he was well paid for many years prior to his ACL. He’s a smart man, I’m sure he has taken measures to secure his future and the future of his family.
Not to mention that a rookie salary is still a decent salary.

Yes there’s at least two relatively ‘new’ posters. New under their current username, that is. I’m sure they’re both incarnations of previous posters. One has actually implied as much. Called himself an ‘old sparring partner’ of Binman’s.

The other is (I think) a poster who gave me a ton of grief two years ago, now posting under another name.

Anyways, we know the trolls always lose in the end. 👊🏼

Don't know who these other posters are but my posts have nothing to do with trolling. You're obviously passionate and do a lot for the club so it's not about hatred.

Admittedly it has gotten frustrating when you refuse to answer any perfectly valid questions and tell me to 'jog on' or devalue it because according to you 'I've been here for 5 seconds' or some other kind of bullying behaviour, they have simply been questions, not trying to give grief.

For instance when you said the football department and cheer squad work very closely together, I genuinely wanted to know how this was the case and was all ears and open to what you had to say. I could understand the marketing department and the cheer squad working closely together but the coaches, list managers, sport science people etc.? The non-answer to me came across like this was just a hyperbolic statement designed to get people interested.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
