Out of interest, when did the idea of a club trading someone and continuing to pay part of their contract originate in the AFL? I don't really remember it prior to Grundy and as far as I know it doesn't happen in many other professional sports does it? At least it doesn't seem like in other sports you have players still being paid by a former club for multiple years after leaving?

To me it just seems like a crazy path to go down. If you're going to part with a player it's hard to swallow the idea of paying them to play for someone else.

Goes at least as far back as Shane Woewodin to Collingwood. We needed to move him off our salary cap and were willing to still pay part of it just to get the rest clear.

So that's 20 years that I know of. Definitely becoming more common recently.

Surprised at how honest he was. We have our work cut out for us gaining respect back in the industry.

He got the (Colli) wobblies because of the media narrative around our reported chaos! Net score to date: President retired weeks before her required retirement. ANB granted release for family reasons. ............. UMM, nothing further to report, Sir!

Flat as I’ve been in a long time. We all knew that was what happened but to hear it out of the mouth of an All Australian from another club was like a dagger.

Dees needed to clear the joint out this off-season when the chance presented itself. Feel an inexperienced board (or at least president) was what stopped it happening.  Sick feeling we’ll look back in 10 years and really regret the lack of actual change when it presented itself this offseason.

edit: not lost on me that I was the one defending Pert recently and saying you can’t get rid of everyone at once….

So our reputation did in fact spook a player from joining us.

Our reported reputation, yes! The playing list is currently in excellent condition. I expect an 8-2 win/loss position in the first 10 weeks of 2025. I will gloat on a gigantic scale at that point in time. You?

So you agree the club has to work towards fixing that reputational damage then.

So the media hysteria got him to their beloved Pies instead of us? Well done media!! Would the timeline be aligned to when John Noble said he wanted out?

Hopefully this puts to rest people constantly having a bit of a sook as to why we couldn’t land a big fish or didn’t do a whole lot of trading…

What he said was a prime example of how most players would have felt if Our name popped up.

Hopefully it also puts to rest people claiming that nothing is wrong with the club and its all media BS.

Perception is reality and it cost us elite talent by the sound of it.

Also if nothing the media reported was true it would have been very easy to shut down.

I suggest an 8-2 win/loss will take care of that!

Dan the man seems to flip flop if you ask me! I heard him say that suggestions he wanted to move from PA were wrong, and he was staying! I think we dodged a bullet!

Has the 2025 draw been announced?

I must have missed it.

Embarrassing

The club’s number one priority in 2025 is to earn back the respect back of the members and the wider industry

For a dual All Australian to talk so openly about not wanting to join us is damning and shows how far we’ve fallen

Yes the toxic media doesn’t help, but perception is reality, and we’ve got a long way to go get back into a position to bring elite talent into the club

Some of us are prepared to make a prediction without worrying about the facts. Just look at how many experts said we would be without Tracca, Ollie & Kossie in 2025. I've decided to be as dependent on data as they are!

Gloating? On Demonland? Why? We all support the same side and want the same outcomes.

There is a lot of work to do to get to the end of round 10 with 8 wins. If you genuinely think we haven’t got fences to mend internally and credibility to restore within the competition, well I don’t know what to tell you.

I never lost my respect because, having worked in the 'how does media work' field for many years, I don't knee-jerk every time a self-appointed 'expert sports analyst' seeks clicks.

Don't tell me anything! Every club has work to do. 8-2 will mend any fences that are essential to keeping the cows in!

People can walk and chew gum at the same time

Did the media take advantage of the situation and exaggerate our issues for clicks? Yes

Does the club have serious issues that saw two of our best ever players wanting to leave? Also yes

To think otherwise is head in the sand stuff

The good old 'head in the sand' phrase that supposedly wipes away all opposition (and guilt) for those who were sucked in to the 'head up your rear end' movement!

Is it fair to infer Petracca is partly to blame for this (because of how he handled things), or is just the symptom and how he went about it cost us Houston (and had all this aired today), but ultimately will result in change which is more long lasting?

The observant consumer may have noticed that I am spraying the site with my 'gut feel' observations on Houston. I'm doing this to mirror the behaviours demonstrated by those that continually jump to conclusions based on here say, and click-bait propositions (that have reached plague proportions in the mainstream). If there is going to be unsubstantiated prediction and personal opinion dressed as news, I choose to create stuff that is Club-positive!

I would question what made our best player so disenchanted that he felt the desire to look elsewhere.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
