I’m furious about this. We keep getting made an example of when this happens every round. Take a good look at teams such as Collingwood and Carlton - I can guarantee their players will never get sighted and they do this on a regular basis.

Who was the first and only player ever to be suspended for wrestling? Alen Jackovich ( MFC)

Who was the first and only player to be suspended for a nearly but missed high tackle? Brett Moloney (MFC)

Who was the first player to be suspended for a sling tackle (allegedly causing concussion, though being BOG the following week?) Jack Trengove (MFC) on Patrick Dangerfield (Adelaide)

Does paranoia need to be unfounded conspiracy, or does actual conspiracy also count?

A more than fair outcome. I'd be livid if we were robbed a free by an opponent doing the same thing.

I'll be even more livid if a Carlton or Collingwood player does the same this next week and it fails to even crack a mention in the MRO report.

We were already, this year, when JVR laid a tackle v Carlton (of course) and we scored a winning goal only to be called back for what was universally called out as a staged sling.  No MRO there - Carlton exclusions apply.

Yes, I am paranoid.

Fine them? hah! Didn't the AFL declare a couple of years back they would pay frees against a player who ducks his head regardless of the tackle.  This was in order to discourage ducking so as to protect the head, nothing to do with milking frees?   As usual with the AFL it is a rule/interpretation that lasts as long as a lettuce (with apologies to Liz Truss).

The only problem I have with the May's fine is he's about the 50th example this year. If the AFL was fair dinkum why not go through all the tapes and fine the other 49.

My pet hobby horse.  A player will some day break his neck when driving headlong into an opponent’s midriff and the opponent will be vilified and made to have lifelong guilt.  If every player who did this was penalized every time it would stop immediately, and a true tragedy may be avoided.  But the AFL will do nothing until it happens then wring their hands with faux shock and surprise.

Friend texted me and said Kate Roffey was just interviewed on the ABC. When asked about this her response was “I haven’t seen it so I can’t comment”.

Can someone here confirm this? If true that is an appalling response

Appalling? It’s not even a bad response let alone appalling. She’s not a coach. She’s employed in an admin role.

That has to be AI, as the golden boy would never stage/act and of course would never be called out for it.

If she did say that why not just say I didnt see the incident but its not something that we as a club condone. I would have personally added "but it's an action that happens every weekend".

I don't think she is "employed" by the MFC,  or at least I hope she isn't.

The video shows part of the problem. The commentary team dictate the narrative. They were very generous in the assessment of the Daicos. Far less so of the May incident. The same way it’s been all season, and for years. The commentators all leapt to Maynard’s defence. And so the narrative begins. It’s horrendous. Kozzy pickett this year the same. Called as a thug and a sniper I. The media. Then another player does it and it’s clumsy. Different MRO outcome.

Edit. I’d also like to add that I hate Nathan Jones commentating Dees games. He has fallen for the old ‘I need to barrack for the other team so I don’t appear bias’ mentality. Absolutely hate hearing him commentate our matches. He thought the Caleb Windsor sling was fine. It was over the boundary and unnecessary and would have been paid in any season before this one, but particularly this one.

Take the general staging element out of it for a sec. Yes there's plenty of it that goes unpunished blah blah I agree.

Opening up the phone lines and specifically zeroing in on staging in a sling tackle...

A) Can you differentiate between this and say a ducked high tackle from a small forward? Was this simply easier to catch him out on as you can disguise knew dropping better than banging your head against the ground?

B) Secondly is this the first fine for staging in a sling tackle?

That it was a sling tackle seemed to escape everyone’s brain. Phenomenal - it’s a free kick if he hits his head or not right? So why all the commotion?

Cam Rayner ran into a bloke head high and held his head to indicate contact to milk a free. Why isn’t anyone making a fuss about that? Why isn’t that fined?

This was all led by the media - again bathing in Melbournes demise. It was so much better when we were winning so we could stick it back at em.

First club to be done for tanking, or bringing the game into disrepute for discussing it.

First club to have had a top 5 and NGA player taken away from the ability to draft him.

First club to lose a player for a legal tackle that accidentally caused a concussion, Chandler.

First club to have a player miss effectively a third of that season for a sling tackle, ANB in the covid shortened season.

First in most games played against the Cats in Geelong in the last 25 years.

First club to have a player suspended indefinitely, without a decision or hearing, for 10 months, for using coke 4 days before a match day.

First club to lose a player forever, from a bump that a few months later is deemed illegal.

First club to have allegations that the Coach was drinking and gambling with the players.

First club to have Directors be sued by the immediate past President.

First club to have a goal reviewed and disallowed after the all clear for allegedly having the ball touching the hair of an opposition player without any vision of same.

First club to have one player have multiple overturned goals on review, after the all clear by the goal and field umpire ANB.

First VFL/AFL club Board actively seeking a merger with another club and and using proxies of non club fans.

First club to have a player suspended for standing still, while an opposition player ran into him in a practice game concussing himself, May.

I am sure you can all have some fun thinking of some other firsts.

…to somehow warrant the May’s action, we would be shamed by the public. As it happens, the club don’t believe your theory either.

I seriously question your claim

You’d think so right. Just look at social media - there is a lot of negative sentiment amassing  re AFL. VIC clubs vs Non VIC, Protected players / clubs, umpiring going to [censored]. The only thing the AFL have on  their side is there no real competition from other sports.

Look, I’ll concede “appalling” might be too strong an adjective. But to say she hadn’t even seen it…I’m sorry but I question the honesty here. It’s very disappointing at most, and if true that she hadn’t seen it, most weird at the least.

Her role may be administrative, but when she chooses to go on the radio it extends to “publicist”. And a good publicist doesn’t front up to the media without doing their homework.

I’m definitely over the confected outrage in the media on this.

A few weeks back Quaynor admitted to lying that he touched a kick to try to get a goal overturned. Where was the outrage then?

Show me the same level of outrage the next time Daicos, or Ginnivan, or whoever is next, throws their head back Shuey/Selwood style. Will Cornes demand a press conference apology? Will Buckley suggest suspension?

As Leigh Matthews said on Sunday on Footy Furnace, it is laughable that  people are now saying touching your head to get a free, is now a "disgusting act" on a footy field.

He absolutely rubbished Morris and the Medias' obsession with the May stage.

Said it has happened countless times this year without Media comment.

So true. I really enjoy it when a player gets a soft touch to one side of his head and then holds his hands to the other side of the head.

It's absolutely embarrassing that Mark Robinson and others would suggest Steven May is a cheat for something that happens 100s of times every weekend, staging has been a part of the game for years, you can't pick and choose when you're outraged if you want to retain any sort of credibility.

lets see if Mark Robinson would call Zach Merrett a cheat the next time he exaggerates contact to get a high free kick.

Joe Daniher would have 10 oscars for the dives he's taken over the years.
