Why was Spargo in rehab?

He didn't play the practice matches, then walks back into the starting 22, then displays laziness/lethargy during the match, then is back in the rehab group at the next training session.

Am I missing something, did he get a new injury in the game, or did we just totally [censored] it by picking him?

Yes, he has looked ready as soon as he started with us.

They must be working on him understanding the roles.

Great that he had a few centre bounces with Clarry in the Casey games. Can only help his development.

Today he was hitting his targets and no fumbling, all the new young ones have improved the standards at training. The only ones showing some rust, were Melk and Farris-White. Sestan was getting plenty and finishing well in the less defenders sims. Jefferson couldn't get into the sims game, looks lost and needs support on where to position himself. Adams blanketed Fritta during sims.

Really hoping Adams makes it.

would love it against a team who we wouldn’t have to worry about as much defensively for Adams to come in and send may forward (can always sub adams out and put may back if need be)

Sestan must be getting close Kev.

What position are they potentially grooming him for do you think?

He played most of last season as a mid/HF with Casey but i think you're suggesting he's now being pushed back (at training) for a potential defensive role?

Thanks for today's report as well.  Much appreciated.

l don't recall him playing in the practice match or match sim could be wrong. I thought the days were gone rushing back players particularly if they are the fringe type.

Yep he certainly did not play any other games prior to Sydney…

Had me wondering why they’d pick him. Was he underdone? If so, why would you risk him? I don’t get it, although I don’t get half the stuff Goodwin does haha

Deep forward looked like Sestans role today. Yet to see him work off the backline, but have seen him as a high half-forward at trainings.

To some degree yes Von.

There's no doubt we put time into the oppo.  Including strategy, possibly targeted training and of course at the selection table.

But the bulk of what we do, according to the Coach anyway, is targeted at playing the way we want to play and to our strengths.

That's my understanding anyway.

Expand

I just assume we are training with a congested forward line because we’ve observed that’s how teams are going to play us.
Im sure we’d love clean turnovers across halfback and through the middle leading to an open forward line but we also need to learn to navigate a congested forward line.
when we have the game on our terms and lock it in our forward half that’s what we will be faced with.

it looks like we are trying to learn to navigate it better than we have in the past with bringing in certain personnel who are better equipped to hit targets and by training it and understanding it better.

I think they will keep Laurie in as they continually used him as a linking player in the sims, though would love to see Tholstrup in, but could be Woey.

Chandler was quiet but Goody seems to favour him. Billings in for him wouldn't be far fetched.

Spargo out, Salem back, kossie mid/forward.

Fullaton has to be a chance to replace Schache.

Salem needs to be kicking it i50

such a waste down back for me!

If Tholstrup is ready I reckon we take the chance. Probably safer option with someone like Woey but I’m just so keen to see how Tholstrup goes

Cannot think of anyone else who knows the backline system, and bringing in another green player alongside Howes could throw it out of kilter.

Agree totally about his kicking as a mid, and I really would want him to play on the ball. Who else at this stage can take on the small opposition forwards?

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
