Mid Season Player Rating Review - Forwards

Kysaiah Pickett (Key Forward  23yo  171cm

Rnd 1 to Rnd 4 vs Rnd 7 to 12   +   H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024

Kozzy has played 10 matches from 12 so far in 2024.  Missing Rnd 0 & Rnd 5 through suspension.

I personally feel we need to get the balance of Kozzy's time spent between forward and CBs right.

His CBA% of 52% against Freo was too much for my liking.  Robbing him / us of valuable minutes up forward providing pressure and potential goal scoring.  He was mostly ineffective anyway.

Then you have Clarry's CB attendance down 25% from his 2024 average.  Not sure what the FD was thinking there.

Kozzy's goal scoring from his first four weeks is down 41% and his tackles inside 50 down 33% and nearly 50% on his 2023 average.  His one percenters are down 33% on 2023.  Unfortunately his turnovers are also up a massive 220% on his first four matches and 25% on his 2023 turnovers.

Have we tinkered a little too much with some player's roles so far?  Tipping the balanc out of wack  if you like.  Effectively playing a number of them out-of-form?  If so, it would appear much of this has happened (with said players) over the last 6 to 7 weeks.

Mid Season Player Rating Review - Forwards

Bayley Fritsch (Medium Forward  27yo  188cm)

Rnd 0 to Rnd 5 vs Rnd 7 to 12   +   H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024

Fritsch has played all 12 matches in 2024.

Although holding his form somewhat over the last six weeks, Fritsch started off a fair way off his 2023 metrics.  In most of those he has failed to peg them back during this last block of games.

Sadly the bulk of out forward line has pretty much bombed (bar some cameos from Tracc & Fritsch) during this last month and a bit of footy.

Jacob van Rooyen (Key Forward  21yo  193cm)

Rnd 0 to Rnd 5 vs Rnd 7 to 11   +   H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024

Rooh has played 9 of the 12 matches so far in season 2024 missing Rnds 10 & 12 through concussion / injury

Not the greatest or worst from the young fella.  10% off 2023 is gettable but still a worry that we haven't seen an uptick in half a season.

Tackles in general down 30% vs 2023 and more importantly zero tackles inside 50 in his last four matches!  Effort / fitness / other?

  • Shot Rating: average score above or below expected score per shot at goal.

Notes: Expected scores are calculated by Wheelo Ratings. Each shot at goal is assigned an expected score based on the distance from goal, shot angle, and type of shot (e.g. set shot, general play following contested possession, general play following uncontested possession, ground kick, etc) as a proxy for pressure. The model does not take into account factors like the player, whether the ball was kicked with their preferred or non-preferred foot, and pressure on the player when taking the shot. Rushed behinds are excluded from actual and expected scores.

Round 13, 2024 MCG - Magpies vs Demons

Our fourth capitulation for the season and imo our second worst performance behind Rnd 10 vs the Eagles.

A few individual performances went well, but beyond that it was a complete team fail across all lines.

Shut down Viney (or if he ends up injured) it would seem we are pretty much toast at extraction (and then clearance), especially in the middle where we are getting trounced even by mediocre opposition or worse!

As high as Clarry's rating is he is still a long way off past seasons and i just didn't rate that game at all.  He was running past contests, missing too many tackles, handballing to no one in particular or dump kicking without even glancing straight to the oppo etc.  Kicking in general was abysmal at times.  And then there was the post match disgrace with him and May, which i will leave there for fear of saying something i'll regret.  His ranking is also a bit misleading with Viney having a complete downer and Tracc subbed out playing only 40% game time with the rib issue.

Team Rating down substantially on 2023 again (-16%).  Another horrid rating from the bottom 6 rated players (17th to 22nd).

Overall Team Pressure (164) again WELL below AFL average (180) with the Pies a mile ahead (187).  That's almost as bad the Saints against us a few weeks back (160).  That's how bad we are tracking in this part of our game.

Defence and forward 50 pressure a massive fail with a fair chunk of scoring chain sources coming from stoppages / turnovers inside our own F50 and the bulk from turnovers on the wings.

If i was to hazard a guess, sadly i would say we are now one of the easiest teams to defeat in the AFL with possibly only North sitting below us (until now).  And we will get an understanding of where we are at there in our next match.

How Chandler, Sparrow, Petty are getting game after game after game is mind boggling.  Not to mention the selection debacle of Billings & Laurie.  Soft as butter.

Wheelo Ratings telling Stat from the Pies game…Demons had 8 of the bottom 10 rated players.

Two of the 10 were the subs from both teams. Excluding them the Dees had 87.5% of the bottom rated players in that game.

Midfielders need to stop getting a get out of jail free card with their pressure ratings being passed off as high all-round effort in a game. We got bossed +8 in centre clearances, the moment they win one of those clearances you as an opposition mid are already standing in an in-close position for a pressure act to be recorded by default. It's the equivalent of padding your stats with short kicks in the backline.

It's a fallacy, especially when you consider how often we go hard on our forwards for not applying enough defensive pressure each week.

The model does not take into account factors like the player, whether the ball was kicked with their preferred or non-preferred foot, and pressure on the player when taking the shot. Thanks again.  Expected score seemed about right. For the second week in a row the opposition were kicking them from everywhere and we're missing gettable shots. That's almost 10 goals cumulative in 2 weeks I think.

Fwiw  I think the methodology is a little tough on Turner and non midfielders in general. If he keeps taking 7 marks a game he will be elite very quickly but I guess 'presenting' at the ball is a tough one to handicap.

Totally agree OMD we only had 15 players that that could look each other in the eye, our bottom 8 performed below an acceptable level, they are killing our chances.

Thanks DD totally agree why are we rewarding sub standard efforts with games, Petty, Sparrow, Chandler, Laurie, Turner and Billings in particular were P Poor yesterday and we are watching our season fade before our eyes. Adam Tomlinson, Tholstrup, Woey, Fullarton and Ollie Sestan would be an upgrade IMO, reward effort and make players earn their spot. With Tracc out for a fair spell, JV playing well below par and Sparrow dropping off we are in big trouble in the mid field. Time to be brave.

DD can you elaborate on Clarry and Steven??

+ Adam Tomlinson should be playing. The knock on his disposals not being AFL standard is utterly absurd given the current butchers running around.  He is the excellent overheard and can take a grab one on one.  In every game he has played he has contributed unlike some of the names you've mentioned.

If we are playing differently, then isnt comparison to previous seasons not very valuable?

The numbers on their own are woeful. I dont have any clue how they are trying to play- nor do most of the team going on what i saw….

We are likely in for a world of more pain post the North game if we don't somehow bolster the middle DZ.

However it happens we need to get Rivers attending significant CBs is my guess.

Whether that involves Turner going down back to fill his role.  Or Marty once fit coming in for Turner to do same.  Whatever it takes.

Also get Bowey out.  He is too slow to transition and his passing is almost always short regardless of whats ahead / around him.  We already have one of those in Salem but even he is a bit more adventurous at times.

I'd need to watch McVee & Howes more closely to see if they're providing anything diff.

I'd be bringing in Moniz to play Bowey's role here.  He has the wheels and plays a much better link up running game imv.  Breaking lines and pinging the ball more quickly i50 for better looks for our forwards.  Some of his play is risky at times but we're getting smashed anyway so nothing to lose by trialling him and he's in pretty good form at Casey.

Love to see Sestan come in for Chandler.  I think he's almost ready but again he couldn't be worse than what we've seen from Chin in 6 of his last 7 games.

And while i don't think he's ready i'd consider bringing in Kolt for Sparrow who has sadly gone south further and further as the year's progressed.

It's a pitty we don't have White on our list as he would be a handy in for Sparrow.

Fullo in for Petty to see what he can offfer vs North is a must and a no brainer.  He could not be a worse forward and offers a tall ruck option with a potential 2 to 3 hit outs to advantage.  Even that would be 2 or 3 more than either Petty or JVR were able to bring against the filth.

Re Clarry & May i'll leave it for now as im just so [censored] off with both i really need time out on it to process and vent.  But not on a public forum such as here sorry.  Im sure you will see or hear about it elsewhere, including diff opinions to mine ✌🏻

Unless they're playing a completely different role such as T-Mac Buck i still think the rating will give an indication as to whether the new style is more or less effective vs what was happening in the prior year.

And if it isn't for whatever reason, if you scroll up and back through some pages here, i've done in season conparisons on most players so you can compare their first six week block of form /output with their last six weeks.

In some cases they have not always played the entire six matches in each block but every metric is averaged to allow for that discepancy.

I've also provided a brief summary of how many games each player has played during the 12 weeks under review, including those missed for whatever reason so you're in the know if its less than the maximum of six in each block.

If i've left anyone out its most likely they've played less than four matches in either or both blocks.  Ie; sample size not robust enough to justify the analysis imv.

Thanks DD, i greatly appreciate your efforts.  My thought was that if we are trying to do something different, we might (for example) have lower pressure acts but more uncontested possies?  Some of the scores in comparison to previous are disastrous, so I was really asking if there was an explanation in the change of style, or have many fallen away so much?

Regardless of game style Buck, there are certain metrics a team / player will need to bring in order to beat their opponents is my take anyway.  Aspects like effective disposals, reduced turnovers (critical imo and something these ratings allow and adjust for), one percenters, tackles (although ideally you would want 'effective tackles' but we don't have access to them), contested marks, marks inside 50, tackles inside 50, rebounds, clearances, score involvements and ultimately of course the ultimate attribute... goals.  These are just some that need to be going north not south if a team is to win on any given day.

If looking at a positional change from one year to the next then the make of those metrics may change significantly.  In that case you need to be very skeptical of comparing one year's results to another for the same player.

T-Mac a great example here.  Obviously he isn't scoring and he isn't going to have as many inside 50s or marks inside 50, tackles inside 50, score involvements etc.  But he's going to have other aspects.  Some of which may skew his rating as he is going to get a number of cheap effective disposals out the back vs up forward.  He will probably also have alot more one percenters defending from behind.  But then you just make sure to compare his rating to that of similar team mates playing a similar role such as May and Lever.  And if i had the time to do so, comparing his rating to other Key Defenders around the comp.

So yes there are flaws in any such exercise as this but if you are 'in-the-know' in terms of knowing and watching the team and its players' form / progression then you will be aware of these aspects.  As i always say with any stats, they are just a backward looking snapshot of some of what's taken place on a day, a block of games or a season.

They can never capture everything that takes place on a field and are just there to help as a rough guide to potential form or output of a player over any given period.  Sometimes they are quite accurate and at other times they will miss by a fair way vs what actually took place on the day or in season etc.  But they also sometimes remind us of what we may not have seen, and allow us to go back and check if we have time to re-watch a game and be sure that what we thought we witnessed, was actually what happened with said player on the day.  I have done this at times and i have to say it has occasionally changed my view of how i perceived a player went on the day either at the ground or watching the box.

In summary, i think i general the comparisons are a pretty fair guide from one season to the next, provided a player hasn't changed roles entirely.

I hope that helps a little.

Team & Player Ratings to Rnd 13, 2024 vs H&A Season 2023

Not looking good.

With the loss of Gus, our season was always riding on the fitness and form of the three amigos in the middle.

We have now lost Tracc.  Viney has been on the decline (injuries?) since Rnd 4 vs the Crows and Clarry is a shadow of his former self and, if we had a replacement, i would suggest needs a long stint at Casey.

We also needed Sparrow to come on but unfortunatley he instead has regressed badly and is really only getting games due to a lack of depth.  Chandler same.

Time to see what we have downstairs and give some of the developing / other role players a go such as Sestan (VG on the weekend), Moniz (serviceable) and Fullo (did ok!).  Looks like we are also attempting to develop BBB into a forward / ruck chop out option at Casey.  Is that necessary though given his knee and where he's at in his career?

Others are in the mix but haven't really shown they are ready yet such as Kolt.  Smacca had a good game also but still needs to build a tank, defensive pressure at ground level and consistency before he gets another call up imho.  About two to three weeks and then back in or do we risk bringing him in earlier?

Woey & Tommo should never have been dropped for KB and need to come straight in.

The players who should not be playing and shouldn't have been played for many weeks now which i have harped on about for a while...

Petty - poorly managed from his too early return after 1 shizen casey game

Chandler - Also poorly managed. It was obvious he was on a massive slide off his early form from about three weeks ago

Turner - not after the Freo game, either needed to go down back to allow Rivers to spend more time in the middle or out of the team to work on his fitness / game at Casey

Bowey - gone over this one before, gets to the right spots but just isn't damaging at all and makes us too slow to transition, allowing the oppo to get numbers forward almost every time.  Puts zero speed on the ball with his stop and prop short game.

Howes - just not at the pressure / intensity level for AFL right now for mine.  More time at Casey needed to work on these aspects.

Billings - VFL player at best and when he went back to Casey he did NOT show enough to get the recall...not sure what Goodwdin was watching / thinking here. He adds and brings nothing.

Laurie - Same as Billings but also a turnover king, even at VFL level under little to no pressure at times.  5 turnovers against the pies and DE at a horrible 57%, thats 17% below AFL average.

Add Hunter and Schache to this list also.

Personally i'd delist those last four at season's end.

Round 13, 2024 MCG - Magpies vs Demons

Contrary to OhMyDees summary of Wheeloratings's player ratings... i had the bottom 10 rated players (excluding subs) as a 50/50 split between both teams.

We also had 6 of the top 10 rated players

Where we did get smashed was of course our usual achilles heel up forward

Namely conversion - Pies 74% vs Demons a paltry 29%.

And % of inside 50s that resulted in Goals - Pies 28%  Demons 13%

Just more accurate and efficient inside 50

Combined Ratings

The Pies just pipped us with their team rating by a meager 2%.  Demons 58.43 vs  Magpies 59.70

Our Top 6 rated players had the 'wood' over them by 7%   25.40  vs 23.65

However they got us with their bottom 6 by a whopping 22%  8.10  vs 9.93

ANB an amazing effort to keep Nick so low in the ratings and post a decent one himself.  Unfortunately Josh got off the leash!

    GAMEDAY: Rd 16 vs Brisbane

It's Game Day and the Dees are deep in the heart of enemy territory as they take on the Lions in Brisbane under the Friday Night Lights at the Gabba. Will the Demon finally be awakened and the season get back on track or will they meekly be sacrificed like lambs to the slaughter?

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
