That’s one way of looking at it. We also lost the QF because we were physically challenged early and we took time to find our game. We then watched as player after player choked in front of goal…. Then we lost against Carlton because we were horrendously undisciplined, burnt our team mates and failed to put away a weaker opponent…… Then we have the off field issues which we can’t and don’t need to discuss as we all have seen it play out.

Sorry that you think it’s unreasonable of me to think that all is not rosy. Our last game against Carlton was not played by a club in good shape.

I agree with what you say, but the issues you raised have nothing to do with culture. We obviously had to rework our gameplan after losing our key forwards before and during the finals and losing Brayshaw in the first few minutes of the QF. We didn't have the time or the personnel left to adapt.  This may have contributed to the way we played against Carlton. Looking back, I think we did extraordinarily well to be in a position to win both games.

Rewatch the Carlton Final. For a club that talks culture at every opportunity It’s a complete train wreck,  pure and simple……

Yes I added mayo but I don’t shy away from how bad we were that night no matter the final margin. We were so clearly the better side yet we handed them the win from our lack of disciplined, team first football. The very same standards we hear the club go on and on about……there’s currently more talking than walking imo.

Hear Hear.  We lost those 2 finals games by a grand total of 9 points and all we hear is what a disaster/cultural issues etc.  Anyone would think we lost both games by 10 goals.  Doubtless there is a lot to fix, but jeez....

Discipline was a factor, but imho not the major contributing factor. I still think we were unnerved from the Collingwood game and started to buckle at the knees at the thought of straight sets. We seem to have lost the resolve and belief that we had in 2021.

We also didn't deal with the adversity of the Collingwood game at all. Largely shaped by the hit on Gus early in the game - we were clearly rattled and I think that carried through to the next game. Max's injury against Brissy early in the year was also a telltale sign of this.

Clubs know we can be rattled.

Yeah yeah, we  are a rabble.
9 losses in 2023 for a total 79 points combined. It’s a game of fine margins these days and the luck in our forward half disappeared late in the season.
Most consistent Melbourne team I’ve seen supporting them. A few tweaks here and there and we are in it up to our eyeballs in 2024.

If Collingwood or any other club for that matter had our record over the last 2 seasons and the off field issues to boot we’d call them a rabble with a poor culture. Sure we’d be exaggerating for our own enjoyment but that’s the words we’d use. The fact is we’ve folded when it really matters. Clubs know it and the Pies exploited it in the QF. Carlton didn’t need to exploit it, we handed them the win with our worst team game in years. I don’t care about the margins, we lost a gilt edged opportunity to win a flag. That pisses me off and the club as a whole is not at the level it needs to be to win the flag. I’m an optimist when it comes to the Dee’s, always have been but the end of last year showed there’s plenty to be done.

He hopes. He hopes that they are all those describing words - pre-season just started.

Can we put a pin in the ‘our culture can’t be too bad - we only lost by 9 points total in finals’?

Its as stupid and irrelevant as those that equate giving away 50s and frees to having a bad culture.

We have some challenges to overcome amongst the expectations on and of our playing group. And we are also a very talented list that had no effing idea how to deliver to the advantage of those ahead of them.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
