Lalor, who also has a high-level cricket background, is a bull in the contest, and similarly impactful as a midfielder and forward. He had only brief on-ball bursts at the championships because he was short on match fitness, but kicked three set-shot goals against the Allies. One to watch.

    Likely draft order and picks as things are now

    Tigers  Jagga Smith

    **Lions Levi Ashcroft 

    Kangas  Luke Trainor 

    Eagles  Finn O’Sullivan 

    Crows  Sid Draper

    Saints Josh Smillie 

    Suns Sam Lalor (depending on whether clubs bid on Leonardo Lombard)

    Dees need to look at first choice being between Xavier Lindsay or Harvey Langford

    then trade out 2025 first round pick to get access to another 2024 1st round pick to get someone (if available) like Sam Lalor/Murphy Reid/Tom Gross/Christian Moraes/Toby Travaglia/Taj Hotton/Bo Allan.

    Agree. Shanahan is very good. His marking and goalkicking will be highly sought after. 

    Will be interesting to see if JT thinks we need another young key forward.   We have JVR, Jefferson and Kentfield.  I’m probably all in on our first 3 picks being midfielders.

    Playing devils advocate here in regards to Dan Houston and trading out our first rounder.

    Perhaps this is the draft where giving up a top 10 pick for an established gun like Houston won't come back to bite us?

    Given the evenness of the draft pool and Cal reportedly saying its a deep draft but the top picks lacking last year's star power, I can see a world where we give up pick 6-8 and trade picks into the late first round/early second round.

    Not saying its the way to go, but if we turned pick 6 into Dan Houston and a mid we are happy with then it's perhaps worthy of consideration.

    Looking at Cals July phantom form guide, these are the midfieldeds in the back end of the first round currently/early 2nd.

     

    16. Xavier Lindsay 

    19. Cooper Hynes

    20. Tom Gross

    22. Christian Moraes

     

    If we can somehow turn 6 into Houston and one of the above, that's doesnt sound like a bad outcome. Obviously there will most likely be more trade capital used to make that happen.

    @dazzledavey36 I’m sure you seen lots of Joe Berry games. What’s your thoughts on him?!

    We all want midfielders but with Kossie spending time in middle and Spargo both injured and on the outer when fit I wonder if we would be interested. Seems to have a. Skill set we could certainly do with.

    Berry is a gun mate. Has come through the development ranks and certainly spent time with him in our under 16's program (I have no role in the under 18's)

    He reminds me so much of Toby Green with his skillset and ability to provide X factor in big games. He likes to pushes up the ground and be creative around the midfield stoppage as well.

    Last few games at Coates level He's played midfield and still find time to push forward and hit the scoreboard.

    So Lions get another #pick 1 prospect after Levi nominates the Lions today. Seriously this club cannot get more luck.  To get 1 F/S as pick 1 prospect is 1 in 100 but to get 2 in 3 years is daylight robbery. They have essentially done a mini a-grade rebuild, whilst finishing top 4 in the last 5 years. This just doesn’t happen elsewhere. I’m all for F/S but this just isn’t right.

    We’re lucky we even have pick 6 this year. We offered Hawthorn pick 6 and a future first last year to move up two spots and grab Nick Watson. What a disaster that would’ve been, another Lamb master stroke.

    So we didn't do a trade of 2 x firsts and Lamb is to blame as it would've been terrible in hindsight? But it never happened and it's his fault anyway?

    Yes, he claims it was 6 and a F1 for pick 3, and speculates it was for Duursma or Watson. Hard to know how much fact is in that without a quote from the club

    It’s the same as the Petty thing. The journos all say oh they were offering two first round picks, however we never even entertained the trade so how would they know what was actually going to be offered.

    It’s not hard to comprehend though is it ? Look at all the picks we gave up to move up TWO spots to get Tholstrup. It’s what we do. Always trying to get as high as possible. Twomey nails the draft every year, he predicts the top 10 every time, he’s not exactly Tom Morris reporting gossip.

    Yes, but he's a journo nonetheless. It's not fact, just what he thinks.

      There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

    • CASEY: Footscray

      At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

      Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
