Please post all new threads relating to Trades, Draft & Free Agency on this Board. Any threads relating to these topics that are started in the Melbourne Demons Board will be moved here.

The unofficial name of board is the Way To Go Trade Draft & Free Agency Board dedicated to the good folk at the other end of the continent who made possible draft picks 5 and 24 and last year’s first pick Matt Jefferson who is coming along  nicely at Casey along with one or two other little gifts.

Please note that all of the usual Demonland rules about posting apply there … and please be respectful 😀.

Way to Go!!!

I like the subheading "Discuss everything to do with the Draft, Trade Week & Free Agency".

Brought to you by the same people who refer to "peak hour traffic" and the "Women's Weekly" magazine, published monthly.

What does everyone think will happen on our list?

I'm thinking:

Grundy - Traded

Harmes - Traded if interest there

JJ - lose to free agency

Tomlinson - Traded

Melksham - Retire

Hibbard - Retire

Dunstan - Not offered a new contract

Ben Brown - Retire (may stay on the list and continue his AFLW coaching career with his contract as payment)

That is 7-8 List changes which is a lot so I don't think they will all happen.  Some may also seam harsh but got to be ruthless.

Is a couple of other young guys that haven't shown much in the VFL but i can't see to many more list changes other than these, they will probably keep them and hope they benefit from another year of development.

We will more than likely carry a couple of SPP selections into next year.

my best guesses, which is all they are...

  • harmes - 2024 contract smoothed out to 2025/6
  • grundy - requests trade to pear; probably a future 2nd coming back to us
  • hibberd - retires / possible rookie spot retention
  • melksham - retires
  • tomlinson - retained on the list in 2024 due to no trade interest
  • jordon - signs as a free agent elsewhere
  • dunstan - no contract offer in 2024
  • disco turner - elevated to senior list
  • brown - retires early, 2024 playing contract turned into coaching contract

that's 5, possibly 6 off the list

Grundy for a future 2nd Round pick sounds too cheap (32 to 36 if Port were to remain top 4 in 2024). Would push for their future 1st round pick with our future 2nd & 3rd round picks going back the other way. On points that would equate to an approximate equivalent of Grundy for somewhere between pick 23 to 25 - the end result being highly variable if form from this season changes for both clubs.

would happily take that but i doubt the pear would be happy

They are getting an AA Ruckman! They should put up, shut up and cheer up.

Can't Port trade this year's picks for Grundy? Clubs have to use 3 picks each year but that includes rookies. Couldn't they offer up 37 & 43 in return for Grundy plus Melbourne's Future 3rd. 37 & 43 are worth 861 points in return for Grundy (27 is what we used to get him worth 703 points) with a future 3rd worth 220-233 points based on Melbourne finishing Top 4 in 2024. We would definitely prefer draft picks this year to bundle for a trade with Gold Coast. Of course 37 could drift out a bit as it's based on Colingwood winning the Premiership.

Yes @Sydney_Demon, that's another way of skinning the cat. The risk there lies in counting on GCS to do as expected. Given that we don't necessarily have to trade Grundy, I'd rather transfer the risk across to Port.

When the club names its first draft selection this year will the producer of the programme play the Dockers song with the words …

Demons Way to Go
Hit Em Real Hard
Send Them Down Below
Demons Give em The Old Heave-Ho
We Are the Melbourne Demons

I am hoping that we achieve three key things at the draft this year:-

1- Tall forward, 196 - 200cm

2 - Tall defender 195 - 198cm

3 - Tallish midfielder 188 - 192cm that can play forward or back whilst he developer’s into a premium mid.

Then pick up Pup, Rookie the Best available Ruck running around in SANFL, WAFL or VFL and find Toby Bedford’s best available relative.!!!!

Hibbo retired.  Likely Ben Brown to retire

Likely Dunstan will be delisted. Likely Grundy, Tomlinson and JJ will seek to go elsewhere.

Thats 6 list spots

1- promote - Daniel Turner. Creates rookie spot.
(save spot for a rookie )
2-3 Add Shane McAdam and another mature player, probably backup Ruck)

4-5-6  package up picks and get access to two top 10 picks + add Kynan Brown

Interesting to know whether we give a one year deal to Melksham. He showed he’s got another year and hopefully recover from his knee injury by half way through 2024.  He deserves to go out on his own terms.

Unsure about Harmesy??? Contracted. We love him.  But he’s out of favour seemingly with Goody.  Offers may or may not arrive.

Or at least players who can hit a target with foot skills inside forward 50.
Or players that can have the skill and confidence to kick goals.
That’s my Xmas list.

Spot on, no point drafting key forwards if we can't hit them up.

  • PREVIEW: Geelong

"It's officially time for some alarm bells. I'm concerned about the lack of impact from their best players." This comment about one of the teams contesting this Friday night’s game came earlier in the week from a so-called expert radio commentator by the name of Kane Cornes. He wasn’t referring to the Melbourne Football Club but rather, this week’s home side, Geelong. The Cats are purring along with 1 win and 2 defeats and a percentage of 126.2 (courtesy of a big win at GMHBA Stadium in Round 1 vs Fremantle) which is one win more than Melbourne and double the percentage so I guess that, in the case of the Demons, its not just alarm bells, but distress signals. But don’t rely on me. Listen to Cornes who said this week about Melbourne:- “They can’t run. If you can’t run at speed and get out of the contest then you’re in trouble.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit.
Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

For a brief period of time in the early afternoon of yesterday, the Casey Demons occupied top place on the Smithy’s VFL table. This was only made possible by virtue of the fact that the team was the only one in this crazy competition to have played twice and it’s 1½ wins gave it an unassailable lead on the other 20 teams, some of who had yet to play a game.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

In my all-time nightmare game, the team is so ill-disciplined that it concedes its first two goals with the courtesy of not one, but two, fifty metre penalties while opening its own scoring with four behinds in a row and losing a talented youngster with good decision-making skills and a lethal left foot kick, subbed off in the first quarter with what looks like a bad knee injury.
