i.e. soft decision is touched even though he is unsure

or let me put it another way

3 choices - 1. definitely touched  2. maybe touched  3. definitely not touched

what should the soft call be for 2.?

if it is 1. then why bother going to arc unless it is to check if over the line. In this case obviously not .

    probably. jvr should have jumped in front of him as if attempting a mark but just make sure he "misses"" the ball.

    otoh, not being paid a free against just compensates for the free not paid to him having his legs clearly taken out when he was just in range on the 50m line on boundary. tough shot i know, but he could have nailed it or got in a short pass.

    For those who can’t accept that umpiring affects results, think about the illogic of that. ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING that happens during a game is sanctioned, or not, by the umpires. Otherwise put, the game doesn’t even start, and no result is achievable without their action or inaction.     The question then to ask, and as you’ve all astutely outlined, there are obvious, simple solutions, is why aren’t the AFL improving what is a horrible shambles? 
     


     

    One thing that has contributed to the poorer standard of umpiring, and which will not be reversed because the AFH said that it would improve the standards, is the introduction of the fourth field umpire.  It has to - the talent pool is diluted.  

    A suggestion somewhere I think earlier in this thread, given the AFL's opposition to full time umpires across the board (it would encroach on the directors' bonuses for starters) would be for one "professional" umpire and two or three if they insist part timers.  The senior or professional umpire would mentor the others and maybe only cruise around the centre calling out wrong decisions such as the JVR legging one.    At least they would only have to employ maybe 9 or 10 full timers, not 40.

    And one thing really irritates me: when this anonymous bozo makes his or her or their decision, why not just say ":goal" or "behind" instead of wasting a further few seconds by announcing "decision on scoreboard".  Next they will add the audio drumroll, or maybe Edelstone's cheer leaders !!

    Look at the full front on block on Gawn, running back to take a mark, twenty out from our goal seconds later. Put him on the ground. Player ran at him and knocked him over, off the ball.

    Umpire was right there.

    Most blatant free of the night not paid.

    I blame myself for falling in love with such a stupid game.

    Its exciting, has great skills, tough. The game has everything, but is ruined by umpiring.

    Saturday night was great and in the end the Blues fans were delirious with joy. So many of them singing the song at the top of their voices. It was their turn to get the "rub of the green".

    What is sad and frustrating yet comical is watching fans shouting for frees that aren't there. Umpiring has become so random that anything goes. The Blues crowd next to me were shouting and complaining when on the far side of the ground Hibberd punched the ball out of play. I'm shouting at them, they're shouting at anyone. It's a mess.

    Hmmm! Maybe random umpiring is good for the game. At least we don't have a ground announcer come over the public address system "Quiet Please". I hate tennis.

    The instructions on interference are coming directly from the AFL and the Umpiring arm which is attached to it to combat Max's height and ability.

    According to my colleague who is a WAFL umpire, they have two apps to assist in reviewing performance.  The apps have time stamped footage of all the calls from a game made by an umpire with specific comments about the calls made and suggestions for improvement, and also communications about umpiring principles and the like.  Assume that AFL would have something similar!

Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder.       Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
