CASEY: Rd 20 BYE

The VFL system is broken if teams play two matches over four rounds to accommodate a bye. This is especially so when clubs vying for finals places need to give all their players the best chance of getting a game.

According to Simon Goodwin, there won't even be a scratch match - just extra training to give the players an opportunity to run the usual distance and carry normal match workloads.

Still – bad luck for those on the cusp of selection like Brodie Grundy, Charlie Spargo, and a few others.IMG_4180.thumb.jpeg.caabf0457d41161c1ad6940f2d6afb1b.jpeg

The limited fixture this weekend will suit a few of the teams in the race for “wild card” positions. Casey needs to win a couple of their remaining games to do that.IMG_4181.thumb.jpeg.240d0bbc5e367d3b8674e977a6e07b5a.jpeg

Just wait until the AFL have 19 teams and the Dees get a bye in Round 1, and the power clubs just happen to get them perfectly spread out throughout the season.

I wonder who they will give the Bye in Round 24? A suspected bottom team or one who is likely to be in finals contention which would mean two weeks off before finals.

The Dees. Rounds 1 and 24.

It's bye 2 that I have difficulty with. You have 18 games for all clubs and you have completed the fist bye. Then you have five games in which to complete the second bye for all clubs. You could accelerate the second bye for some clubs but then you would have a ladder for a lot of the year where some clubs have played 2 games less than others.

Of course if you drop the last five clubs out of the comp after the completion of 18 games you don't need a second bye.

Think a few players are doing the last of their in season reload.  Oliver will come back at 100% and looking to rip the doors off. With this bye, All our reserves get load without impact- perfect for our firsts, not so good for Casey

No problem with the old VFA clubs in the comp. It's the byes and the reduced number of games that kill the comp.

Given the absence of WA and SA from the comp there's still room for at least 4 non aligned clubs

Surely that would be enough reason  to scrap the pre-finals bye

Need for two conference system again with wildcards and playoffs and other American style imported gimmicks. VFL is a pseudo east coast made up competition.

Reports in News.com that former Casey player Nick Lowdon has passed age 23.

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.
