Demonstone's $1964 Question

Featured Replies

We're in the middle of a ten (or nine :D) day break and things are pretty quiet around here.

As threatened, here's another brainteaser to help you while away a lazy Sunday with no FTA footy to distract us.

This team of past Melbourne players goes back as far as the 1960s but, while it contains several very good footballers, isn't a champion side by any measure.

The idea of naming just two reserves was such a success last time (Sez who?  Sez me! ) I'm running with it again.

The players all have something in common.  What might that be, Demonlanders?

Usual rules apply:  Answers in a PM only, clues provided if and when I think they're necessary and prizes are non-existent.

B:        Des O'Dwyer     Troy Broadbridge     Paul Hopgood

H/F:     Andrew Lamprill     Tony 'Spud' Dullard     Colin Sylvia

R:        Leigh Newton     Brock McLean     Andy Lovell

Congratulations to @Tim who is the first to solve the mystery.

Cheers ‘Stone, it’s long been my goal to win one of your brain teasers!

They all played before champion data became a thing

Perennial solver @tilly18 has done it again and become the second Demonlander to work it out.

In addition to answering correctly, our winner @Tim also provided extra information which I'm quite happy to steal and use as the basis for the first formal clue.

The captain of this team is, perhaps surprisingly, starting on the reserves bench.

Only the two correct responses to date, so it looks like another clue may be in order.

No player on our current list qualifies for inclusion in this team, although there are some who may well become eligible at a later date.

Did you see my first try, Mr Stone?

I assume you've fallen for the trap of adding to an old PM, @Timothy Reddan-A'Blew.

You might also like to amend your post above because it does give the answer away.

Amended. Sorry.

Indeed I did; couldn't remember the issue last time. Re-PM-ing now.

Thanks to @Timothy Reddan-A'Blew I can now reveal that both bench players would qualify as Captain.

Is that your answer?

1.  Incorrect

2.  Please reply via PM

@Jumping Jack Clennett has jumped up to grab a share of the spoils.

I'll post the answer later this evening.  All of my teasers are ephemeral and have little meaning but you might say that this one is particularly pointless.

...well, initially anyway.

Australia is all out at Edgbaston, having fallen just short of their goal of a first innings lead.

Not so with the above team.  All the players in this side achieved the comparatively rare feat of scoring a goal with their first kick in VFL/AFL football.

Incredibly, both the bench players in James Magner and Peter Tossol goaled with their first two kicks!  I was unaware of this when compiling the team and thank both Tims for bringing it to my attention.

The baton of bafflement has now been passed to @Timothy Reddan-A'Blew who will present the next teaser.

...once the 4 Kardinia Park points have been secured and there's another longish hiatus suited to such distraction! 🙂

Col Sylvia also has an asterisk on his place in that team, as I recall that it took him till his second game before he had that first kick - that’s gotta be a rare achievement!

Yep; 1 handball in 40% game time on debut!

And some more, thanks to Demonwiki:

Tony Dullard could also have captained.

Troy Broadbridge kicked a behind but received a 50 and goaled with the re-kick.

And the 'Wiki' again: Mike Collins (61-62)

  • PREVIEW: Brisbnae

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.
