I think that the largest home and away crowd ever was about 98,000 or thereabouts between Melbourne and Collingwood way back in 1958!. And I think it is still the record (happy to be corrected).

What makes that so fascinating to me is that the Melbourne city population I’m guessing back then would have been 2 million or maybe even less.

I understand that now people have so many different and competing options to what was available back then. But nonetheless, there must have been some incredible hype leading up to that game.

I know it is grasping at straws a little but I find it exciting that this coming Monday may be our biggest turnout for a home game since then.

For those of us that will be fortunate to attend, do our boys a huge favour, make a lot of noise. GO THE DEES!!

Crowd noise must help a team with motivation and momentum (particularly in the final quarter) and possibly help with umpiring calls. I've been to many Collingwood games in the past 12 months and I'm very jealous of the influence they can have and the atmosphere they create. If we can be just 10 or 20% less civilised we would be helping the team out.

I don't think that being reserved is at all a good supporter trait.

I agree. The quietness of Melbourne crowds do my head in.

They're not always quiet, but often they're quiet at the wrong times.

I remember going to a game against Port at the G in the early 2000s. There was something like 12k there. It sounded like 50k, so we can make noise (think Geelong and Hawthorn 2018 finals as well), but we don't do it consistently.

And I have to say, sitting in the MCC, there are so many Melbourne people that just simply don't understand the rules or have a decent feel for the game. But all clubs have nuffies.

Personally I leave every single match with a sore throat and a headache that’d drop a horse. All good, that’s what I signed up for. But it’s so disheartening to have to keep hearing about how we don’t turn up, and about how those of us who do turn up aren’t making enough noise. It’s especially irritating when it’s coming from someone who for whatever reason can’t/won’t attend.

It's not going to change in your lifetime so you may as well deal with it

Since the 1960's I've been hearing the same thing so your evaluation is nothing new

We won 5 flags in 6 years with a reserved and conservative support base ... in front of bumper crowds (100k etc)

What wins games of football is pure talent and good coaching.  All the rest of it is fluff and mostly bs

You can’t make strawberry jam out of pig sh!tt. We simply don’t have the numbers of a Collingwood or a Carlton. We likely never will.

Our defence line-up is looking mighty good and how good would it be if we could use Petty back?

May & Lever have hit their straps and with Salem, Rivers, McVee, Bowey & Brayshaw (along with Petty or Tomlinson) we can push for another flag tilt

Backline is full of class and a bit of dash

The 2nd half against the Blues gave us a glimpse of the past (2021) and a vision of the future

I like to be loud but sometimes like on Fri night I yell a bit less and do more thinking about the game. Cheering though is always constant.

Yelling all the time like a Dikwad doesn't always make you a better fan.

So many supporters mainly from other clubs, give calls to the ump when it is obvious to most that there is nothing to see here. Carlton calling "ball", all night long on Friday, is an example. So glad that is not in the MFC supporters DNA. Would hate for us to be like that. Bad umpire decisions either way, effect a good game. Winning liking that, is for me disappointing.  

I even call the footy gods in when a howler of a bad decision leads to a kick on goal and we miss.

Sometimes when I barrack I get the, I am annoying, type of feedback. When I was in WA, many wanted to fight and use personal abuse. So, sometimes it is time and place. Has happened at the MCG as well. A Hawthorn supporter at the last game we played was really "off".

There are many nuisances to support and just making noise that is contrived is taking the reality and drama out of the sport. The stuff that occurs with some clubs when the home team scores is weird.

I reckon each to their own though.

I do wish we made a lot more noise though. You can be loud without being the moronic type of pies supporter. It def influences umpires when the crowd is in full voice. At the Freo game their very few supporters were extremely loud. I know for the fact the club acknowledges that we’re “too quiet” as a club. You often see on the screen at home games …messages asking supporters to make a noise . 

I've got a mate who is in the building trade (supplier)

He deals with hundreds of people every month and those numbers are changeable

The talk often revolves around footy with nearly everyone of his hundreds of contacts

Zero Demon fans as contacts ... none! All Tigers, Pies, Blues & Bombers with a smattering of Dogs, Hawks & Saints fans

In many ways we are like North Melbourne supporters ... scarce

And that's what happens when you crud for decades.  And we will continue to be that way unless we have sustained finals success for at least 10 years

And that's on the club, not us. It's the club that needs to deliver (consistently)

All we can do is fork out our money and support.  And as far as I can see, our supporters have always fulfilled our part of the bargain

It's the club that has often fallen short

Agree we are mostly quiet compared to other fan bases but can get very loud occasionally.

I doubt many saw this but there was a time in the 2nd QTR after about our 4th horrible F50 entry in a row that went straight to a Carlton defender and the crowd were restless and negative.

As Carlton ran the ball out, Trac turned to the crowd and yelled " show some [censored] support" during play. I heard it from the 2nd level. At the next stoppage he was revving the crowd up lifting his arms repeatedly.

Our support and lack thereof is so important to our team. Some of the regulars around me are so damn negative and at times disgraceful with abuse hurled at our players it's embarrassing.
