Narrmland

Featured Replies

Can’t recall if we discussed this last year, but is it possible to change the name of “demonland” to “narrmland” for the next two weeks?

Realise that Narrm replaces Melbourne, not the demons per se, but it could be a nice nod to the club’s initiative.

Went and did some research, the State Library online is an excellent service.

Anyway as a slight addendum to NBODemon's suggestion

Narrm Biik (for ground/land in Wurundjeri language)

Not to be a pedant but it isn’t MelbourneLand…

Someone asked me about this last year and I thought about it but I'm not sure it's not appropriation or insensitive to indigenous people and their culture without their blessing.

The Dees certainly did their research and got the blessing from the relevant indigenous community and leaders.

Happy just to promote and celebrate indigenous culture by promoting and supporting the indigenous community in any way I can.

This is certainly a valid point of view and worth considering. I guess it comes down to the intention of the name change. It could be about the club respecting the traditional owners but it also could be about popularising the use of aboriginal language and particularly place names amongst us all.

My understanding—and I’m reaching back to my undergrad anthropology classes so happy to stand corrected—is that many important places have multiple names, some of which are more sensitive/secret and some public. My assumption is that narrm would be from the public lexicon and thus appropriate to use.

As an aside, my understanding is that Geelong is derived from the aboriginal word jillong and relates to the location a certain bird is or perhaps was commonly found. We use quite a few aboriginal place names and other terms in our Australian English, often unknowingly.

I’m surprised our club hasn’t jumped on the domain name

narrm.melbourne

did you check narrm.demons  demons.narrm  narrm.mfc  mfc.narrm  melbourne.narrm  etc?

No didn’t check all those but narrmfc.com.au redirects to melbournefc.com.au which is a nice touch.

I’m looking forward to us being known as either Melbourne FC or Narrm FC interchangeably.

DC, top level domains are pretty limited and usually countries, etc. the top level domain melbourne has existed 9 yrs or so and was created by State of Victoria. In theory they could also create a top level domain for narrm. Would be nice if they did but didn’t make it available for registrations and just made it alias for melbourne so every subdomain just appears in both spaces.

@Demonland surely there is someone on here that can point you in the right direction to get permission.

From the selection available in Victoria I nominate 'Nargun', half-stone half-human evil spirit.

We used to do school trips to the Den of Nargun in East Gippsland, near Bairnsdale. Brings back memories….I never knew the basis for the name. Fascinating.
