Round 21, 2023 Blundstone Arena - Kangaroos vs Demons

Didn't watch the match just the mini Kayo version.  Listened to the radio broadcast but doesn't reveal all that much.

Team rating on par with the season average.  The bottom 6 well ahead so looks like we batted pretty deep on the day.

So what's with Hunter's result?  A massive rating for anyone let alone a winger and over 100% up on his average season rating!  So was that how it appeared on the day, did he have a big impact?

In summary...

26 effectives (the most on the day alongside Ziebell) @ 79%, 5 one percenters, 5 clearances, 2 rebounds, 5 inside 50s, 3 tackles, 9 score involvements, 6 intercepts, 339 meters gained and a reasonable 4 turnovers.

Speaking of Ziebell, it felt like he was everywhere on the day in that first half.  Intercepting everything and disrupting so many of our forays forward.  Even 10 minutes in i was wondering when we were going to put a cooler on him but he just kept repelling at will it seemed.  Did anyone notice a change up from the box here in an attempt to lesson his impact?

Tracc also had a big influence on the game it would seem?  Gus, Jordan, ANB and Bowey rating well.  JVR seemingly a very good game up 47% on his season rating!??

McVee the best for the Dees and only one in the top 20 with +21.61 differential, and surprisingly our opponents this week, Blues, have 3 of the worst 5: #2 Lewis Young with -40.68 (hasn't played recently, spot taken by Kemp who is 4th best with +33.64), #3 J.Motlop with -40.23, #5 Cripps with -33.07. No Dees players in the worst 20!

Great stuff DD, a bit more context on Hunter from what I can see in his stats (similar to you, still need to watch the replay from Q2 as I was lucky enough to only be able catch Q1😡): 15 contested possessions (#2 for Dees, behind Trac on 16), 5 clearances (#4 for Dees, behind Viney on 10 and Trac/Gus on 6), 6 intercepts (#2 for Dees, behind Lever on 7), 10 ground ball gets (#2 for Dees, behind Trac on 12), 9 score involvements (#3 for Dees, behind Trac on 12 and JVR on 10) and 3 score launches (equal #1 for Dees, with Trac and Gawn). From this, it looks like he contributed strongly all over the ground!

Very good signs with the majority of player ratings either near or in front of their 2022 ratings now bar May, Harmes & Melk.

Not highlighting anyone within approx 10% as this can easily change over a few matches should they happen to out-perform their average rating.  Some might also be playing a diff role vs 2022 so that needs to be taken into account.

All eyes on Clarry's return!  Fingers crossed.

Thanks DD I gave Hunter votes but did not realise just how good he was, same for JJ. Viney, Brayshaw and Tracc stood out and it’s always positive when the bottom 6 perform to a higher level, spots are hard to come by and we are only 3 weeks before finals. To bad Casey missed another game certainly doesn’t help our preparation.!!!

Might be the effect of missing a full pre-season starting to impact Kent. 

Pure speculation but listening to many players who've had that interruption over the years, they all say that anytime their pre-season's effected it tends to result in a less than optimum performance during the year.

Not sure what's happened to Harmes.  No one door stops the payers much and even if that were to happen they're all so well trained to say nothing now.

The other one is May.  Might also be a pre-season issue.  Wasn't there some sort of calf issue early on that he was recovering from?  Missed the first game or two?

Slight delay with the stats update this week as I headed over to Melbourne to see the game.

Melbourne's pressure of 200 was our highest for the year and Carlton's 206 was the highest against Melbourne. The pressure in the last game between Melbourne and Carlton was 170-170. The pressure points from Oliver (106) and Viney (98) were well above any other Melbourne player this season with the previous high being Oliver's last match with 85 pressure points.

Wow. Just wow.

Those pressure numbers are crazy

 Amazing it ended up 50 50 time in forward half given the first quarter was 24-76.

The other interesting stat is scores from turnover - which is where we lost it (that and giving up those 2 quick goals early in the first - oh and a goal umpire seeing something that didn't happen).

At the g they roll thru stats on the scoreboard.

At one point in the third q they put up the blues score from turnover and it was 33 from 41 points. 

Nuts.

A function of their incredible pressure - but also our poor foot skills.

But they ended the game on 33 points from turnover, meaning we didn't concede any more points from turnover for the rest of the game.

That's impressive.

The numbers back up what the eyes showed in terms of pressure and intensity- but also that we were the slightly stronger team after the first quarter. 

By the by, that was the most tackles laid in a game this year.

Expected score factors in umpiring error obviously.

RE their disposal efficiency over ours. 72% to 66% their way. IMV, that was a function of uncontested possessions, which went their way by +33. 

And I reckon their DE went down as the game wore on and we prevented the avalanche of uncontested possessions that we allowed in the first half.

I expected and think we should have rucked Grundy more and played Max forward more. 24% of ruck contests and 29% of CBAs is very low.  He played 60% gametime, if we take the 24% ruck contests to indicate gametime in the ruck that means he played 36% gametime forward (60% of his gametime), but that's even a big underestimation because a lot of those ruck contests would have been when he was forward.  The message from the FD was "we want to play Grundy a bit more forward" but we played him predominantly forward.

Max contested 73% or ruck duels vs Carlton.  Last week vs North he contested 62% with JVR 38%.

It just doesn't make sense to use Grundy so little in the ruck.

Yep.

The uncontested possession differential was massive after the first quarter - it's another stat that caught my attention at the game. 

It stayed about the same for the rest of the match, meaning we either stopped them chipping it around or they stopped using that strategy (which seems less likely)

I think we'll find it was mostly a function of handball receives in D50 for Carlton. The chip to the pockets and then handball receive. The Daicos game. And staggeringly, we allowed it for an entire half. Didn't even adjust at quarter time. 

Kozzy then moved deeper in the third and started to track those runs from kick ins. It made Carlton kick to contests where we were set up.

Round 22, 2023 MCG - Blues vs Demons

Pretty decent return for Clarry.  Only 10% off his season average rating.

Gus topping the ratings.

Viney would have been up with his peers had he not had a massive game high 13 turnovers.

Forward efficiency dropping away with the Petty effect and pressure?  The Blues not that much better aside from accuracy at goal with a significant conversion advantage.

The team rating a massive 19% off the season average is a big worry, even if against VG opposition.  The Top 6 this week holding the line nicely though, along with Joel Smith.  Salem surprisingly rating better than my own impressions of what i saw on the night.

The rest dropped away with many apparently stepping in a steaming pile of Blue doggy doo.

Thanks DD our top 7 played out of their skins, shame about JV his efforts were enormous at winning the hardball and the turnovers resulted from the extreme pressure that the blues exerted on us.
