I reckon Fritsch might be back for the last game of the season. Listed as 4-5 so it is possible.

My worry is it is a foot injury - Fritters second this season. We saw with Tmac last year how difficult such injuries are to return from.

I think I'm right in saying that like Tmac last year, friitter has had a plate put into his foot. The timing of the injuries are almost exactly the same, with, IIRC, Tmac really pushing hard and playing in the pre finals bye round at Casey to make a case for selection against the Lions.

Again, IIRC, Tmac injured his foot again in that game and that was that.

Well, almost - Tmac reported early this season the foot was still giving him problems in terms of pain management and was stiff etc after training and games. To my eye, it seemed to impact his mobility and performance level when he was playing (of course there could be other causes).

I have full confidence in the medical team, but i hope Fritter does not push too hard. No point risking a similar scenario to Tmac where the foot injury impacts his prep for the 2024 season.

We had no other realistic option for a second tall last season, other than perhaps JVR and we desperately needed a second tall, so very understandable they really pushed to have Tmac available for our first final, the Lions match.

Yesterday's injury report had fritter at 4-5 weeks. The first final is in aprox five and a half weeks. So very much touch and go.

Whilst not having Fritter available for the first week of finals (which would of course be a blow), Melk, in his current form, is not bad cover.

The prelim is aprox seven and half weeks from today, which might be a better goal for Fritter's return.

Let's say we win week one of finals and go straight into a prelim. We would have a weeks break ahead of the prelim. We would likely use that break to play a full scale match sim, which would give Fritter a chance to push for selection and test his foot.

And of course, if the prelim was the target return game for fritter, he would perhaps have the opportunity to retune via Casey, assuming we are still in the hunt for the VFL flag.

The Casey finals schedule presents an interesting curve ball.

The VFL are having a wild card round this season - 7th v 10th, and 8th v 9th - on the weekend of 26 August (which is also the last round of the AFL season).

It is possible we might slip to 7th or 8th (we are 5th) and have to play that weekend as we play 3 top 8 teams in Willy, the lions and the blues - and ridiculously we have another bye!

But is some ways that would be no bad thing, because if we don't play the the VFL wildcard round Casey will have yet another bye, which would mean no opportunity for Fritter (or Tmac for that matter) to play for Casey that weekend, in the event he is available to do so.

The VFL finals series starts the weekend of 2 September, so if we make finals Fritter and Tmac could possibly suit up for Casey that weekend.

This years' VFL grand final is 24 September - same weekend as the AFL prelims. The VFL prelims are the previous week

As much as we all love him, playing Fritta fresh from injury in a QF, SF or PF is really a big risk - im not sure id be willing to take it especially with how we are covering for him now. Its a big unknown for sure and i'd love to get a game into him before he appears for us in a final. Unfortunately for him, the timing just may not work out for him.

Glad we have the pre finals bye. Fritsch should be able to get some sort of hit out in before finals in 7 weeks

Don’t rely on VFL with their absurd number of byes.  (end of thousandth rant on this poor excuse use for a support competition)

Its all so vague regarding the return of Oliver & Fritsch.

Melbourne have to find permanent replacements  on the assumption neither player returns this season.

Theyre running out of time.

Oliver is a chance, Fritter I doubt, foot injuries take time I would rather him firing in 2024 than re injure it late in August.

I’d say Oliver is almost certain to be back in 2-67 weeks and Fritta 5-56 weeks…quite clear

Re Bailey Fritsch ; my 8 year old grand daughter heard his name as Baby Fish.

Around here, that's what we call him!

Sounds like there is bit of a ‘Twist’ to this story.
It’s okay, I’ll leave now

Still very vague on Clayton. “Still got to hit markers and be comfortable hitting them.” Might be round 21/22, or round 1-2024.. Who knows.

I over thought that joke.

Back in the day a twist was Mary Jane or the dragon in some paper twisted to secure it.

I don't think Dickens was talking about that when he called his character oliver twist.

Sparrow listed as injured in the ins and outs. Anyone have mail on the injury type?

There was mention of "calf tightness" at the end of training.

Apparently Oliver’s extended time on the sidelines was due to him redoing his hammy a few weeks back. I don’t know whether this accepted fact and but I certainly had heard this too. It’s reliable source so hopefully that removes some of the mystery.

I have some tendon problems in the calf area.

I could run hard for about 25 minutes, without any effect the next day. I could continue running for more time, as long as I wanted, but the next day I was limping.

Taking a full rest for 8 weeks was the only way I could repair the tendon.

Though the tendon could ping at anytime, especially when sprinting, and I was back to 8 weeks of rest, massage, acupuncture, and ultrasound treatments.

I found tendons to be the most complicated of injuries, I have had.

Get Clarry right, we need him for at least, the next 8 years.

I get tendon - but has it actually ever been quoted as such? They said it’s near tendon but nothing definitive. In that context a retweak makes more sense that it being tendon and the nobody from the club saying as much.

  • GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

It's Game Day and the Demons are back on the road for their 3rd interstate game in 4 weeks as they face a fit and firing Crows at Adelaide Oval. With finals now out of our grasps what are you hoping from the Dees today?

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
