You do realise we lost?

And we've lost consistently the same way all year.

This thread assumes it will magically change when it matters. I disagree, I think the writing is on the wall.

I assume (hope) you've got something more to add than just possessions. Because for the final 6 mins of the game when it was there to be won Collingwood controlled the game.

We've consistently faded in effectiveness in 2nd halted in big games.

Scoring efficiency and finishing have been a high problem all year. The good teams are way way more efficient than us this year and I'm big games it shows.

Possessions is a useless stat and  loading is a load of crap.

You do realise we won all the key measurements and lost. It's pointless

I do realise that, yes. And had we kicked straight, 4 regulation shots from 25m out directly front, we win.

Can we do things better? Sure, but saying those three guys ran out of steam is just based in fact.

This thread doesn’t assume anything will magically change when it matters. That is the number one incorrect assumption made by those who don’t agree with those who talk about loading. It is a layer of nuance to add to or replace some of the other issues that go in in games that we discuss. It’s literal sports science fact that goes on in every professional sport and it is worth consideration when monitoring your sides progress over a season. Nothing more, nothing less. We also played quite well against the pies in a lot of areas of the game. They are on a massive wave and kicked goals out of their [censored]. It happens. Plenty to like moving forward. The wins and losses crowd who don’t like to play in the grey areas miss out on a lot I reckon.

No doubt, you want to take the glass half full approach and you're correct. We could have won, but we didn't.

We have been in games but their influence on games has. What has been consistent is that In big games this season we have been shut out when it matters.

Do I think we can't win... No I don't, I guess I'm preparing myself for what I see as the inevitable.

You might be right. I don't pretend to know.

One way or another in roughly 2 months one of us will be right.

Like I said earlier in this thread one of us will be right and probably for the wrong reasons.

But that’s the thing. It’s not about being right in this situation. It’s just a layer you can add to your analysis for further perspective to help understand why certain things may be. There’s a level of speculation involved sure, but no one claimed we are a lock as a result of our training program. There seems to be a lot of talking past each other in this thread when we are likely closer to each other’s opinions than we think we are.

Fair points.

Taken on board. I guess I was still upset from Friday and this was my way of dealing with it.

I would enjoy your posts so much more, if I wasn’t thinking about the bloke who locked us down for 2 years while reading them. Any chance of a name change?

Haha good question, i did not think my name through when i changed it and didn't realise it was locked for 365 days.

So unless @Demonland gives me some sort of pass i am stuck with it unfortunately.

Me and my stupid sense of humor.

I get that. Feel the same way.

As noted above, noone is going to be proven right or wrong. It's not binary.

I think most accept AFL teams use peridiodisation training, with goal of peaking at a particular point in time. Loading is just part of tbat program.

For realistic premiership contenders, that peak is preliminary final day, or perhaps gf day.

We are 7 weeks away from that. We ran out of steam a bit near tbe end, but that's no great knock - it was the closest home and away game to a final like intensity I can remember.

We are trending the right way. If we aged the pies three weeks ago and they brought thst incredible level of sustained pressure they would have beaten us by 5 goals.

As it was we really should have won that match. Which is why I am so gutted we didnt.

There's no guarantees Selwyn Griffiths and his team has got it right.

It is a science. But I am assuming from what coach has said that getting it right for an AFL team with 44 people on the list is way more complex than say individual program for Olympic athletes or elite cyclists.

There are just so many variables - injuries, covid, each game is different in rhythm, motivation, impact of travel, unforeseen events etc etc.

If we don't run our games in the finals that is evidence they have got the program wrong, not that we didn't load fir two months.

All great points, and as @von rightly pointed out this is a discussion to try and understand reasons why, so i accept those reasons.

And i agree that we played well on the weekend and have been playing at a high standard for a few weeks now, our best is still hard to beat.

The standard of footy has been very high, it is great finals preparation. Teams have lifted to play us.

But that is why i have gone early on my calls. The trends indicate we are world beaters when the game is played on our terms but we have been unable to do it consistently in big games all year.

What really concerns me though is how easily teams are scoring against us and our inability to score when the game isn't on our terms.

The ability for the Pies to score on the weekend was a huge worry.

On the couch also just put up a stat - (i know how we love stats), but we are 18th from scoring from turnovers this year and were 5th last year.

There are a couple key indicators trending the wrong way this year. I just don't see our best as being good enough this year.

Does you're rational explain it? I don't know, but what i do know is there are some big areas to fix and it is very late in the year to fix it.

Beside the point, I know, but just wanna thank you for your post (above). Somebody actually listening to the other side and then acknowledging the merit of what they’re saying just doesn’t happen often enough. 👍🏽

Post from binman:

I found this comment from Goody's presser yesterday very interesting:

"They feel physically fresh, they feel ready to go, we feel like we have been able to build some cohesion in the way we play in the last four or five weeks."

Some additional confirmation bias, that will no doubt be highly triggering.

I am reading a bit into Goody not dropping blokes who have had pretty ordinary form for some time now. Sure he explains the importance of cohesion, and team stability heading into finals. But given decent vfl depth, the fact he keeps backing in blokes like Sparrow, Spargo and a couple of others, tells me he has confidence their output will improve come finals.

We will see. 5-7 hours to wait.

I'm expecting 86% peak physical condition.

I'm expecting a repeat of the last time we played them.

And when I say expecting I actually mean desperately hoping.
