Adam The God 30,752 Posted June 1, 2021 Posted June 1, 2021 So just saw this post match interview with Harmes where he describes his role against Libba and he makes some pretty clear comments about where and how he plays his best footy. "It was good to have a tagging role again. It's where I feel like I play my best footy... I just tried to put work into him at stoppage and then after that work off him and try and use my running power." Really good insights. It's clear that's his role when he plays defensive mid. It's not a purely negating role, but it's certainly a tag. He does it very well. 6 1 Quote

He’s the general out there, like an onfield coach similar to Luke Hodge back in the Hawks prime. Those types of leaders are worth their weight in gold. Look at how well organized we are defensively out there this year, and he’s a prime driver of that. He barely had a voice by the end of the match when Richardson interviewed him! Just a shout out to Jake. Having a great season, but also proving to be the leader we hoped he’d be. Expand So much so he almost lost his voice. Post-match interview, he sounded hoarse. Accurate comparison to Luke Hodge. When he was mic-ed up during a match couple of years back it was so impressive to hear his constant encouragement/instructions/strategies etc. Edited June 1, 2021 by Guest Quote
Dante 2,739 Posted June 1, 2021 Posted June 1, 2021 Just watched the first quarter and one thing I took notice of was the amount of times Weideman got his hands to the ball first, but didn't take the mark. In the first 20 seconds he would have probably marked the ball but tripped and the ball spilled free. The next two times he flew for a mark only metres out from goal, Jackson flew as well and they both spoiled each other. During the course of the first quarter he got first hands to the ball but couldn't hold it. What I'm saying is that if he had held his marks he would have been applauded for his game. There is only a small margin between an ordinary game and a really good game, he will start to hold them and when he does he will be a very good player for us. 4 Quote

And for all the 'drop weid folks', I am willing to bet that opposition coaches scouting the game, would have seen that he is a fraction away from being deadly dangerous, and he will continue to draw defenders, no-one will be taking him lightly. Adam The God 30,752 Posted June 1, 2021 Posted June 1, 2021 (edited) Let's see how Weideman does against Harris Andrews if he gets him as an opponent. That'll be a good yard stick for where he's at. Even then, if he gets Andrews, all he might need to do is create a contest and snag one or two and that might be enough if it allows McDonald or Fritsch to get off the leash. My point is that JK didn't explode out of the blocks like a Hogan or Cameron but went on to have a substantial career. I really think last week was a step in the right direction, even before the 2 goals, he kept trying and didn't drop his head. I haven't seen him sulk the way Hogan and others have done, I reckon he does have the right attitude. Weid looks different, it looks like his form is rising not dropping away. Totally agree it is a matter of perception (and frustration) . 3 Quote
