Team Announcements Back on Thursdays

Is there anything stopping the dees announcing their team tomorrow night?

It would be great publicity for sponsors and cost nothing.

And then on Saturday they could change it! More publicity

Apologies if it's been mentioned but when do the team currently get announced? Day before? Day of? 30 mins before? I actually don't think I've seen an official team sheet once this year I've just relied on DL!

I feel I am in the minority  in not applauding this change.  With the VFL scheduling being all over the place with respect to the afl's, it just places more difficulties in the way  making of selection decisions.

Day before. Which is crazy.

So ours don't come out till Saturday at 6pm.

Pre covid (which IIRC was the pretext for the change) my memory is that final teams would come out for Friday night and Saturday games on Thursday just after 6pm. And 25 man squads came out on Thursday just after 6pm for Sunday games.

And i thought, but might well be wrong, that last year the squads for a Sunday game out on Friday.

the AFL site even has  a countdown clock.

I thought there might be a game tonight but it's only for team selection

Not sure about VFL

Only one coach has come out publicly and said they don't like it and surprise, surprise, it's the "slick-back sook" Chris Scott:

The one coach that pulls last minute changes in 80% of his games...

Dogs coach said it earlier in the week so that is two

So we're back to announcing a list of emergencies for games that aren't on a Friday night? With proper final teams announced Friday night for our Saturday game anyway?

Maybe I'm way off here...

It's not just about the quality of the information. Of course it is flawed, it's unreliable and for some clubs only bears a passing resemblance to what the final team will look like. As I've said previously, the true value of teams being announced on Thursday nights is emotional. It awakens the soul to the commencement of the round.

When teams weren't being announced on the Thursday, even as a passionate Demon and AFL fan, I felt out of touch with the beginning of each round. The announcement of the teams triggers something in me which gets me more psychologically involved.

I suspect that might also be why I don't like Thursday night football. My mind isn't yet ready for a game that starts then.
