AFLW: Rd 01 vs Gold Coast

First live women's game really entertaining. Don't seem to flay around and play for free kicks like the boys. They just get stuck inย

ย

Suns looking good. ย Their backs are quick,ย our forwards seem lumbering in comparison. ย

Hanks was great that quarter. ย Keep Goldie on she creates run. ย Liking Eliza so far.

ย

Another goal, ย Sun's have started well, very good pressure and lots of clean ball movement. ย We seem to slowly getting on top as our experience and systems seems to getting cobwebs off.

ย

Have we ever scored 7 goals in the first half?

The skills are so much better accross the board as young women who have played multiple seasons at junior level come into the league.

Bannon, for example, is a completely natural footballer. Exhibit A was tge free she won herself near the end of tbst quarter by not taking possession of the ball and getting tackled without it.

They must be loving playing in perfect conditions. It feels like 75% of our games have been in windy or wet conditions. Sometimes both.

Not that I can remember, I think Freo last year has been the only team to score at that rate? ย  The standard has raised again this year so the scoring will become more common. ย

What I don't want to see is taking the foot off the pedal, the team needs to learn to bury sides.

Great toย  see Tegan Cunningham playing well. Karen Paxmen is unbelievable. Hanks and Mithen playing well and a couple of the youngsters look okay.ย

Great to see Tegan Cunningham take marks and kick goals. Lovely shimmy to wrong foot the defender and draw the free for her second. She's one of my favorites.

13 possies to Paxman in that quarter. Machine.

At this stage of proceedings, Karen Paxman (sponsored by Demonland)ย has my three votes. Her attack on the ball is ferocious and sheโ€™s a constant avenue of supply to the forwards.

Iโ€™m really impressed by the standard of the game. The ground is in magnificent shape (especially in light of the number of games played here last year), the surface is like carpet, thereโ€™s a light breeze and despite the humidity, conditions are great. The marking and kicking are so much better than in the first couple of seasons.

Lily Mithen is also up there with Tyla Hanks and Hore and Cunningham are dangerous up forward. Daisy has been hovering around not doing all that much but directing proceedings with her experience.

There are very few Demon fans here so Iโ€™m quiet at the moment.

I was a bit annoyed by the high profile departures last year but I'm feeling much more relaxed now I've had some time seeing Hore, both Pearces, the mouth Mithen and our perennial 'any moment now' key forward Cunningham running around. It's just a great feeling to see Demons in action.

Also, Paxman's initial's are actually "C R," because I swear every time she's mentioned it's "Composure Required... Paxman" and then the play moves 40m in our favour.

We don't need her to "star" anymore with lots ofย possessions, she is far more valuable to the team controlling the game for us.ย

Umps very quick on the whistle.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

Itโ€™s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle โ€“ perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
