Scully yet another early draft pick no longer playing.... how many top 10 picks Scully, Trengove, Watts, toumpas, Morton.....train wreck of our clubs recruiting & development/culture

Pretty damming isn’t it. Whole Club had no idea at all

Yeah. Our strategy of getting a heap of high draft pick kids and just wait for them to develop was shocking.

His will be an interesting Open Mike whenever it happens. Being recruited to a club as one of the "saviours", around while we were an absolute basketcase and then snatched up on stupid money to GWS to be one of their foundation players (and the circus surrounding it). Then suffering a pretty horrific injury and the battle coming back from it.

I've said it earlier, I have very little ill-will towards the guy so hopefully he goes alright in retirement.

Watts, Scully, Trengove, Morton and Toumpas. Hundreds of threads, thousands of post and millions of words wasted on them. Like the powerful dreadnought battleships built, served and scrapped without never firing a shot in anger.

1. Open Mike has officially retired (one of my all time favourite shows)

2. We won't hear from Scully. Extremely private fella who'll drift off and most like not have anything to do with footy at all.

Oh damn! I'm UK based so I missed these things, that's a real shame because he has had some very compelling interviews over the years (Trenners was sadly very dour).

You're probably right about Scully as well, he's never been a media personality or anything. Sucks though as I think his journey, while not exactly an illustrious one, is an intriguing one.

Looking back, I feel slightly grateful that the incompetence of the MFC during that period, and the consequent wounds as a passionate supporter (including as a debt demolition supporter), resulted in not very much - certainly not much to celebrate.

I’m almost glad we hit rock bottom, rather than consistently finished 7th to 11th during that period.

Why? Because those among us who stuck fat behind the club will be entitled, and able, to give the middle digit to everyone who patronised us during that period if and when we win the next flag. The roses will smell particularly nice if we do.

I’m sure it’s easy to support the successful clubs. It however takes far more character to support the likes of the Dees. If there was to be a supporters’ draft, we’d consistently be the number one draft pick.

Let’s bring this ship in to port. Go Demons.

Do you really think people who patronised us over six decades will give a damm if you give them a finger?  Most will be pleased an incompetent and dsysfunctunal club found success. However I do not see a premiership side assembled yet and the recruiting of an injured Brown puts us back a step again.

No I don’t.

But I’ll enjoy it.

Nor do I sadly, but yes, we will enjoy it. I told a pack of Hawks supporters at the end of the 77 prelim that we would get revenge. They laughed at my now very hollow words.

It's weird given our lack of success in living memory but there really are people who hate us, with a capital aitch. I don't know why and I am always amazed when I hear it, but I have heard quite a few times people say with real force that they hate Melbourne's guts. So I am with RB and his rigid middle digit.

Now I think of it, I might just change my name to rigid middle digit - Done.

I think it is because prior to our run of success in the fifties and sixties we were an MCC club of elitists. during our period of success we picked up many averagesuburban  kids as supporters in the schoolyards. However the waft of cigar smoke from the members still sticks around.

Really sorry for the Hawks at all this bad luck they seem to be having and hope they can turn it around .

Unless they happen to fold first .

He was the consensus number one, so not just so MFC in this case.

At the time the Tiges would have loved him...grew up a Richmond supporter.

How lucky were they to miss???

Don't be surprised if he comes out of retirement at Tiggerland.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
