Melksham is not getting any younger. Hannan wants out. AVB's foot is never going to let him reach his potential. Jones has ordered a zimmer frame (well deserved). Harmes is a HF who can lay a tackle and kick a goal.

    I doubt this'll happen as he appears to be a Goodwin favourite, but Melksham would be depth for me from now on.

    He's depth for the defensive forward role or even Fritsch's third tall role or half back depth. 

    He doesn't tackle and neither does Fritsch, but at least Fritsch has 2 to 3 shots at goal a game.

    I can’t work out why when Melksham was having such a poor year and AvB doing very little we weren’t giving Harmes a run as the defensive forward giving him roles on the dangerous half back. 

    He’s been so poorly managed this year.

    We struggled for "connection" this year and that is Melks specialty. So I suspect that is why he got got games.

    Melksham’s effort and intensity was pathetic this year. Have no idea why  he was not dropped.

    Previously that was his strength, this year I reckon he looked for goals more than teammates.

    Couldn't agree more. No matter who we trade in or out, Melksham's position is critical to our forward line success or failure. He has to involve himself when he hasn't got the ball. He has to defend & he has to tackle aggressively. He has given me the "Con Britts" like no other player this year an have felt he should have been dropped as his lack of effort set a poor example. The dilemma is that, forward of centre, I don't know that I'd prefer the ball in anyone else's hands. I'd love Harmes to replace him in that role but unfortunately, Chompers is neither smart not skilled enough.

    If Melksham plays any games next year we are in trouble, he was woeful this year.

    I don’t think it’s a coincidence that we played our best football of the last decade in 2018 when Harmes was in hot form playing in the middle (and mostly tagging).

    Unless he gets back to his 2018 form, in which case we’re looking great. He needs to be held accountable for his poor efforts like any other player. He’ll play games but no way should he be considered a walk up start.

    The good guys?  Not if we play them out of position or select then omit them until they get so frustrated they ask to move. 

    There are some on the trade table that fall into this category.  Hopefully, it doesn't happen to Brayshaw, Harmes and a couple of others who looked 'out of favour' this year.

    It could be better for the culture to cut the 'out of favour' ones lose.  Less potential for disruption among their mates and other players.

    I think he's referring to the likes of Hannan, Preuss, Oscar, Neal-Bullen etc as opposed to Harmes or Brayshaw.

    Enough of these types of players agree to move and then a more suitable spot position opens for Harmes, we keep our core together and we're the good guys in trading away other more expendable players for other opportunities.

    Fritta had  that role In Rounds 17 and 18 and beat Haynes and Ridley comfortably and scored goals and missed shots !!

    Agree with his poor effort and form, but I think the reaaon he wasn't dropped is because he was considered to have the potential to fix the connection.

      Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
