Rhyce Shaw takes extended break

There's an interesting flux going on with what a 'mental health issue' is.

It used to be that anything 'mental health' referred to having a problem within yourself that in some way made participating in life or coping with 'ordinary' stress disproportionately difficult.

But I would be surprised if anyone said that it was in any way abnormal or deficient or dysfunctional for someone who has just had the year Rhyce Shaw has had to decide that it would be a good idea to take some time without pressure and scrutiny while you got back to appreciating what really matters to you.

No doubt, AFL coaching is one of those niches where what is 'normal' is not 'normal' at all!

Apparently an upset Paul Roos was led to believe the job was his but it was just a trick by North Melbourne.

Tomorrow's headline:   Roos Rues Roos' Ruse.

All the best to Rhyce Shaw and his family.

Interesting. Not so much the person, but the speed of the decision. Perhaps the NMFC already knew from Rhyce Shaw that he wasn't coming back and had his permission to start looking. If not, it put NMFC in a very difficult position if they were interviewing potential new coaches while uncertain whether Shaw was coming back or not.

Edit: Thinking about it a bit more I suspect Shaw and the NMFC had been negotiating a departure package so the club knew he was leaving.  And I suspect had his permission to look for his replacement.

I believe they probably knew 6 weeks ago that Shaw wouldn’t be back

Adam Kingsley to be announced as coach

If this happens (and I'm not doubting you), Ben Buckley might be in an awkward position. He's been on radio after you posted this to say that a selection process and panel to select the new coach will be announced soon. (He's not a politician, is he?)

Just going on what I heard but it is interesting to say it’s been leaked if they haven’t got a coaching committee yet.  Maybe not great mail.  We’ll wait and see

He said the same thing when selecting Shaw.  The selection process looked like they tried to get a favourite son and a few phone calls to others.

If they have already selected the next coach one wonders what their Board is doing...or maybe another favourite son is making 'captain calls' again.

Hey demonstone  sorry to out you but you’re obviously Sam the Sub of Coodabeens fame .

I hope Shaw does well. This has been an ongoing issue. The board and assistant coaches have known for a while.

Yet, by all accounts the Board and senior management didn't do much to help him at the hub.  They left him and a first year GM Football (Brady Rawlings) without a lot of support.

Shaw's post game press conf were heartbreaking to watch.  When he said things like "I am at a loss..." it was imv, a cry for help.  Help that didn't come or came too late.

For a variety of reasons, Shaw had one of the toughest coaching jobs this year.

Hopefully he gets well soon.

Rhyce should never have been appointed to a position like Head Coach if he suffers from bipolar. I have a friend who has had it for years. I have enormous sympathy for him
Nought Melbourne have a lot to answer for in this...

If they get relocated they have only themselves to blame.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
