Oliver is an out and out star. Criminally underrated around here. Continually improves his game. A grade without doubt. He is 23 years old. Two years younger than Cripps, yet Cripps is rated by most commentators as a star (and rightly so), but Oliver rarely gets mentioned in the same breath and has just as much influence, if not more, on games. Get around these league wide numbers...

1st for pressure acts.

1st for contested possessions (Petracca finished 2nd, 11 behind Clarry).

1st for stoppage clearances.

1st for total clearances (9 ahead of Cripps).

3rd for ground ball gets (Petracca finished 2nd, 1 ahead of Clarry).

3rd for tackles.

4th for centre clearances.

5th for disposals.

5th for handballs.

7th for effective disposals.

On that basis he should be an absolute Monty for selection in the 22.

Incredible he played as many games as he did, particularly given the travel schedule,  compressed fixturing and that fact Goody barely gave him a chop out all season (by comparisons Nik Nat only played 69% game time and did much less travel).

Gawn and Oliver have both had good years, I think Gawn will make the squad but personally I feel he dipped a bit (harsh to say but he has high standards). Perhaps on the bench for him.

The AA selectors have been criticised previously for squeezing in players in positions they don't belong meaning others miss out. The classic example is placing "excess" midfielders on the wings so specialist wingmen miss out. I seem to recall the AFL stating that this year the AA selectors will choose a real team with players best suited for their positions. If that's to be the case and Natinui is selected as the best ruckman, someone should be selected to be a second ruck for the one-third of the game he doesn't play. That could be Gawn. On the other hand, the selectors could select Gawn who plays 93% (?) of each game and not worry about a second ruckman. That would then allow them to pick an extra (midfielder, defender, etc) on the bench.

Max didn't have his best year. But he was clearly the second best ruckman behind NicNat - Grundy never really got going, and Goldstein faded badly in the second half of the season. Gawn was always going to make the squad. If the selectors go with a second ruckman in the 22 (as they have the last few years), he's in.

May was robbed. Objectively, it's probably splitting hairs between May, Moore and Weitering, with Andrews clearly ahead - fair enough (but unlucky) if he didn't make the 22. But left out of the squad for Zac Butters? Spare me.

Absolutely robbed! Disgraceful decision.

I'm sorry but Max Gawn should not even be on that list. That should be Steven May’s instead.

Gawny was beaten by only one ruckman this year - NicNat in Rd 1 and that game was Gawny's first game coming off injury and he worked his way into the game after half time. He didn't play against Goldy or Grundy, but they were both cooked by then so he deserves to be in 40-man squad, but I expect him to just miss out and only one ruckman named.

I have four players in the original squad who clearly don't deserve it. 1) Butler - brilliant for the first 9 weeks but lost his way over the final 8 games. 2) Olly - yes he had a few cracking games, but you can't use the ball so badly in big games like he did against Richmond and Port and still make it. He's almost a superstar Olly, but not quite there yet. 3) Butters - yes he's coming on and may well make it next year, but it's a bit of a stretch on this year's work. 4) Taberner - Like Butler, he lost his way a bit towards season end, but with only six other forwards listed they probably felt they had to name another one, even if Hawkins and Dixon have the two big spots covered.

What's amazing is that there were 14 defenders picked in the 40-man squad and May still missed out. But all the backmen listed had strong claims - it's just that Maysie was a kick above all of them in the final five weeks.

But Jamar getting in the year he did was mega lucky. Frawley getting in was also pretty lucky, although he did have some super games that year. And Hibbo getting in, when he missed five games, was also mega lucky. So three times the gods have favoured us and May is the first one to miss out for us that really deserved it.

Reminds me of Farmer missing out in 2000, despite kicking more than 60 home and away goals. Woey in 2000 also. Yze missed out in some exceptional years. It’s chronic.

If anyone needed any more evidence that the AFL massages for the outcomes it believes will most benefit it's preferred agenda/clubs.   Remember the whole thing is now a sham and a circus, rewarding those that it wants to market on it's weekly advertising & promos (Friday night footy / other so called block busters....you know like the Blues v the Pies, the Pies v the Druggies on Anzac day etc etc).

Until or unless we win a at least two premierships in short succession the club and its players will never be on the receiving end of some of theses rewards and big block buster matches etc.

Clarry. Tracc, May et al could become the three best players in the league over a season, they would still be considered unworthy by most within the AFL circus.

The thing that Tredrea doesn’t mention is that not only is May a lockdown defender but he marks the ball, he doesn’t just knock it out or away. I will say that May had a slow start to the year and had a number of games where for whatever reason his kicking was diabolical. I just can’t believe he missed out on the squad.

It’s just like some sort of popularity contest.

No logic to it.

I swear those on the committee act like a bunch of teenage girls.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
