Hey Deever. On the 13th of August in 2016 in response to our round 21 win vs Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval you curiously posted the following: "Whoo Hooo. Don't think well play finals this year but I'm sure we will next year."

Well done @Kumamoto_Ken and a big shout out to the real "Woo-Hoo man".  Gotta love a woo-hoo-man with a plan!

As for Woo Who Mystery Man, still my favourite Woo Who came when Clarry goaled from that snap in the pocket a few years back (2017?). So good.

AF - brings back fond memories. I took the family across to Adelaide for the weekend to watch that game. We were right at the top of the main grandstand. As the ferals were getting progressively quiet as we picked up after half time, I yelled out "how good was that" for Clarry's goal. And then wondered if we'd get out unscathed. Gees it was a great night.

Can't recall the industry term but nowadays in a high-end TV series you will tend to have one or two standalone episodes intended to bring the budget down. Usually a minor character study or some single location script. This will be that.

In the course of my research I just got a tonne of information on why we can never hear the questions in AFL post-match press conferences, and a reasonable explanation of why we suddenly can. A new side-mystery, maybe resolved.

First thing. It's not the AFL. The individual stadiums have AV contractors. The standard set up is two desk-mikes, one between the legs, and a mobile boom guy. A couple drop-down mikes would fix the problem, but at an unworthwhile expense.

This feed goes out to the radio. If you see mikes with radio logos set up on the desk these are just props. The leads go nowhere. The press room at AO is like a university auditorium. I always imagined it the size of an average lounge-room.

So the journalists are hugely spread out. It's almost impossible for the boom guy to get across to the question in time, especially when everyone is firing off questions until one is picked out.  The exception is when questions are staged in advance.

Another side mystery that could probably be easily resolved. My source mentioned a chubby channel 7 journo who all the coaches seriously hate. Has a tie or something. Anyway, they will get the camera and boom on him for prearranged questions.

Very simply - with Covid - there are now a fifth of the journalists in the press room. And they don't have to compete to get their questions across. So they just agree to take it in turns and the mobile boom guy is standing there in advance.

The term is a bottle episode. Some of the best episodes ever written were bottles.

Ha. Not me. Have not been to Adelaide for decades.

Sounds like something the woo-hoo man would say.

I would love it if this could be the chant from the crowd (when they return in strength) after each goal, and when victory is assured. The collective woo-hoo would be delightful

Do some googling AF. It will be worth the effort. Somerton Man is probably now more well known outside of Australia than within.

I've done a bunch of Googling and they still say he's unidentified.

The decade's best episode of television, Mad Men's 'The Suitcase ...

think "the suitcase" is probably a bottle episode? one of the best hours of television ever

Yup, 'The Suitcase' is a bottle. Breaking Bad had some incredible bottle episodes and many of its early episodes verged on bottles, because of the lower AMC budgets, but as the show went on, it got more expansive.

One of the best bottle episodes ever written IMO is an episode of Homicide: Life On The Street, titled 'Three Men and Adena'. Fontana is a bloody brilliant writer, who created and wrote Oz too. He won an Emmy for this episode that was also directed by New Zealand director Martin Campbell, better known for directing Edge of Darkness in the 80s, GoldenEye and Casino Royale. It's an episode where the detectives interrogate a suspect for the entire episode. If you get some time, it's totally worth it. Genius.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Woo-hoo man made his debut in our win over Port in 2016? Roos's last win as coach.

Hopefully he's up and about in the last qtr on Sunday.

- Likely lives in Adelaide

- Likes the words woo and hoo

- He lives inside a bottle

The thing about bottle episodes is they're often divisive. People either love them or hate them. I have a bunch of friends that hate that ep of Seinfeld and hate the Breaking Bad episode of the 'Fly' (another bottle).

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
