MFC Team OF the Century - updated through 2020

Featured Replies

What changes would you make if the team was revised to include the last 20 years?   The obvious one is David Neitz comes into the team.  Max Gawn would have to go close, if not be a certainty.

Neiter probably takes Norms position at Full forward

Sad that it's difficult to find many in the last 20 years that would slot straight in. Maybe Nietz, but I think Max still needs a few more good seasons to qualify.

interesting how few players from 1964-2000 (36 years)

starting 18 - only 2

interchange - only 2 (and that is an extended interchange of 6)

emergencies - only 2 (emergencies not really part of team)

Could Jonesy potentially edge out Viney Senior for an interchange spot?

Additions I'd deem worthy:

David Neitz 306 games 2 x All Australians

Adem Yze 271 games 1 x All Australian

Max Gawn 121* games 3 x All Australian

Neitz is leading goal kicker and games record holder for the club. He gets a gig.

Unfortunately noone else from the past twenty years would make the team. Shows why we've been so consistently poor this century.

Nathan Jones could potentially squeeze onto the emergencies. Gawn might also crack the team if he keeps his form up for a few more years.

Neitz CHB. Great as Gary Hardeman was he strengths were speed, skill and marking but not the strength to go toe to toe with a Carey.

Gary would find it too hard to displace either Noel McMahon or Don Williams on a HBF but would make a great wingman (where he started) and probably displace Dixon who was a one trick pony (but a thoroughbred when it came to finding the ball) with poor kicking skills at a time when territory was king.

If not then a place on the bench would have to be found. He was that good but, because of our then deficiencies,  mostly played out of position but he was so good is was not noticed.

Geelong, Hawthorn, West Coast would all roll out teams from the last 20 years that would smack that all-time Demon side by 10 goals plus.

Geez we have been awful at bringing in and developing talent at this club.

The Demons 2026 AFL Fixture is as good as can be expected considering their performances and finishes the past two seasons.
