That's one of the most selective stats to make one's point I have ever seen, how about the 63% disposal efficiency, the 6 score involvements, the smart handballs he did in the game that lead to goals, the kick that hit a forward in the forward 50, also 1 of those clangers he followed it up tackled and caused a ball up no damaged done, in footy it's not always the first effort that makes a difference but the second effort to fix the first.

Disposal efficiency is not a good state mate. Has no context around it and there's certain circumstances where you can turn it over but it be counted as an 'effective disposal'. At least with clangers it's straight up.

Not sure I'd be praising a bloke too much for putting in a second effort to clean up his own mistakes. Bit of a nil all draw I would think.

I didn't say he was poor, I said some of his kicks were poor. I also made it clear I wouldn't be dropping him.

Doesn't have to be all as black and white as you're trying to make it. He cost us the first goal, he absolutely fudged some kicks, didn't get a ton of it, BUT he stayed outside the contest, used space, the score involvements is a great sign and if he just cleans up the kicks and manages to concentrate for 100% of his game time then we are a MUCH better midfield with him there.

My earlier post following my review of a replay of the game with Gus in mind where I saw one mis directed kick to a Hawk and one mis kick worm burner that got to Max anyway. That is not fudging kicks all over the place. Let’s get things in perspective. Gus is playing a subsidiary role, with limited game time and he still has to learn, he is getting there I think.

I never said "fudging kicks all over the place". With that perspective let's have some accuracy hey?

As I said in my post, I recognize it's not black and white. He did some bad, he did some good.

Fair cop. Let’s hope he starts to grow in his role.

Got a lot more hope in him this year than last. Despite the few lapses here and there it feels like he's finding his way. And tbf, probably harsher on his kicking when he's not getting it as much.

He started 2018 very slowly too and as we've mentioned before, Gus is definitely a confidence player.

Let's hope he times his peak nicely for the back half of the season and hopefully a finals push.

I watched a replay yesterday and kept an eye on Gus. As far as I saw it on TV he mis kicked a worm burner in the first qtr that still got to Max and in the third sent off a bullet pass that went straight to a Hawk. That is 2 miskicks and apart from that he had 2 poor handballs under pressure and let 2 overhead Marking opportunities slip through his hands, one was just too high, the other he should have held. In between there was the bulletin pass onto the Weids chest and a couple of great handballs to advantage under pressure. Not a great game by Gus but he didn’t butcher the ball all game as some think. He played his role, applying plenty of pressure on the opposition.

Yeah, that's fair. I think it's probably the nature of the clangers that perhaps tainted my perception. There was a kick or two, under no pressure, where his foot barely touched the ball.

Totally agree on his pressure.

Yeah, he's definitely gradually finding his game. And you're right about 2018, although that was his first post-concussions season I think and the first helmet season (?), so may not be exactly the same scenario, but do still wonder if that's something that effects him.

Gus is playing like he is getting a painkilling jab to his right foot. Shanks a lot of kicks on the right but seemed to get better as the game wore on.

And he does seem to kick a lot on his left at which he is quite proficient

Off topic somewhat, but could anybody close to the club give us some information on Sparrow? Is he ready, and if so, how are we going to get games into him with a midfield as settled as ours?

We won't. He'll have to wait or develop more strings to his bow. That's a sign of a good team.

Cheers. The answer probably couldn’t be better than that....

I think they should move him to half back. He was half back in the game a few years back against Geelong in Gawn's breakout game and was one of the best I think he's a better option than Lockhart and Harmes.

I thought Gus had a decent impact on the game on the weekend. Yep he butchered a few kicks. Also kicked quite a few to advantage that ended up in goals.

There's less being asked of Gus since his breakout season. He is playing off ball much more with Viney, Trac and Clayton playing more in close. I've noticed he's usually a longer handball away from where we win at the contest and is more a release player now. I think he's still getting used to it not having to win the ground ball so much or be as much of a stoppage option like he has been previously.

As Gawn said he's playing his role well. Might take a bit of time until it reaches fruition to the point where we appreciate it as supporters.

Hasn't he already been playing a mixture of wing, half back and midfield this season? I'm pretty sure I've seen him play off half back already.

With Lockhart playing it doesn't really matter but I'd like to see Brayshaw spend more time off half back.

On the extended bench.

I like Gus but he is an enigma. He is worth persevering with. He is trying hard, puts his body on the line. Hopefully just going through a maturing phase.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
