Depends what the impact on revenue is. They should get a percentage of revenue, if revenue drops by 80% because the networks won't pay for no games then players salaries should drop around that mark as well. Maybe cap it at $150k so the bottom percentiles aren't impacted but those earning more than that should have their salaries slashed if they refuse to play

The players get 28% of 'Budgeted' income (or thereabouts) ... not actual income.  And the money is guaranteed.

The only way for that to change is for the players to give some leeway or ... not pay them and let the whole thing play out in the courts. It's highly unlikely that the latter option would happen but some of the clubs may go to the wall unless they start getting some real income in.

As it stands,  the clubs are forking out at least a half a million dollars and up to a million dollars per month - ongoing.  Coaching staff salaries & FD costs included.  As well as Admin costs,  CEO salary etc etc.

And they are going broke in the process as the income has slowed to a trickle.  Ongoing contracts are guaranteed as well.  So we pay the players & coaches but the clubs go broke.

It's any wonder that they want to play the games asap.  But take away the guaranteed salaries and there's no such haste.  A money decision disguised as a goodwill measure.

But why wouldn't the AFL take out some sort of insurance or have an 'Act of God' clause.  Why wouldn't they protect themselves?

Looking ahead they will but that ship has sailed for now and now the AFL has had to take out a $600Million loan.  Which will need to be paid back.  And the next broadcast rights contract may not be as lucrative as previous broadcast rights.

So considering the league and clubs are not-for-profit organisations,  it seems a bit odd that extreme amounts of outgoing monies are 'Guaranteed'.

I mean that's cool if you would, but there are lots of players with young kids, partners who also work, players who are expecting new babies and so forth. I am sure most of the single players would be fine to do it, but when you have a family your decision making can't just revolve around you. You want to tell Jack Viney he won't be there to meet his newborn? Coz I sure as [censored] don't! 

They have handed back some of their pay, but they still are required to train every day and follow their strict regime so they are ready to resume work at the drop of a hat. Unlike everyone else who is unable to work right now, they aren't eligible for jobseeker, they can't sit on the couch and drink and get fat. 

They have contracts, they live within the means of their contracts, and now these circumstances have thrown their life into chaos. They are not different to anyone else, but nobody else is being told to pack up their life and leave their family behind so they can keep their job. 

The hub idea is ridiculous anyway, because there are plenty of people involved who aren't even full time employees, who would be expected to leave their day job to be in this hub (umpires, physios, runners, volunteers etc). Is the AFL prepared to pay to match their wage? 

Best to wait until the state governments are happy to allow the clubs to charter flights on a fly in - fly out basis, and until we have enough testing kits available to the whole community to ensure we are able to test all players regularly. Then we may be able to have some sort of season.

OFC i would say yes. Im a nurse Jaded, and if we all started saying it was just too hard, how do you think that might affect the country. I was, and remain prepared to be quarantined from my family to do my job. Your second para says that my answer was irrelevant to you anyway so i dont know why you bother to ask in the first place.

As for the training part, if any club can find a way to make a meal of this enforced break, it will be our club. If we come back in ripping nick and playing better than the rest of the field i will be shocked to near death. 50 plus year of failure will sow those kind of seeds.

One member of a player or assistant's family getting the virus and who knows what happens. Tested on Wedndesday ... results on Friday... do you tell the team you are playing on Saturday.

I love ethical questions! If we're playing Richmond the game should go ahead and we should try and infect as many of them as possible! I draw the line at spitting on them though... that would be unethical and I wouldn't want us to be seen like their supporters.

The tests they are doing now,  they apparently have the results in 4 hours.  'IF',  there are any antibodies to be seen.?

okay...you hear fifteen minutes before the game but after team sheets have been exchanged

NRL continue to kick own goals...(from the Guardian)

Nine Entertainment chief executive Hugh Marks has fired another salvo at the NRL, saying it’s not a given the league is a part of the network’s future.

Marks’ comments come as delicate discussions continue with the NRL over how much it will pay to broadcast this year’s re-jigged competition.

While stakeholders continue to press ahead with a May 28 restart date, it remains unclear how much the game will receive from Nine and Foxtel.

“We have to be hard … we have agreed to nothing this year,” Marks said during a conference hosted by investment bank Macquarie on Tuesday.

“There is no agreement on value or for how long.
