Of course he would say that.

Should there be no draft this year he'd be singing a different tune

It won't make much difference if no junior football is played this year.

Try picking today's talent on the back of what a 16 or 17 year old was doing last year.  You will have as much chance of selecting quality at pick 1 or pick 20.

I was actually interested in this and checked a few phantom drafts that were done prior to previous seasons. I was a bit surprised - generally, the projected top 3-5 picks haven't actually changed all that much over the course of the year. This time last year - Green, Rowell and Anderson were in the frame for pick 1. In 2018, ditto for Lukosius, Walsh and Rankine. However, there have generally been a few names touted as top 5-10 picks that missed out on being drafted altogether.

If there's a draft this year, it might actually go the other way - the top few picks might be incredibly valuable, whereas there might be little difference between pick 5 and 50.

The closest thing to a lottery,  this coming draft, IMO.

Yeah,  but its only P8 down to around P35,  that we'll care about.

Regardless of what happens with the draft this year, this was a good trade at the time and I'm stoked that we've got Pickett.

Good luck to Nth, but I have a feeling their supporters may look back at this as a 'We could have got Kozzi moment'.

Most clubs know who they want a few years in advance and just trim down he list and raft day depending on their position and other picks.

Not that much of a lottery for the perceived  top 20.

Update.

Kangaroos Pick 6

Demons Pick 17

Sorry DL, I’m not understanding?

We don’t get North’s first round pick next year, they only get ours...

so as it stands they have both picks 6 and 17.

To clarify Kangas have our pick 6 as per current ladder

We don't get a pick back, we used it last year on Kozzie

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
