Sorry to disappoint you chazz.

But your initial comment still doesn't make sense.

In that comment you imply a correlation between looking forward to Joel Smith playing and our chances of success in 2020. No such correlation exists and no one has suggested it does. Except you.

Your above explanation (ie we dont agree on his ability) is a completely different point.

There's a sense of excitement in your posts about what Smith could bring to the team in 2020.  "X Factor", "Defensive Forward Threat", terms like this would imply that you think he is capable of playing a role in our senior team.

What I'm implying is that if we are relying on players like Joel Smith to play a role, and make those contributions that you allude to, then we're not in a great position going in to '20.  Even at 100% fit, Smith should be a long way down the pecking order is we are even entertaining the idea of a rise back up the ladder.  Quite simply, he's just not that good.

I get all that. Let's agree  to disagree on his ability.

But I thought I made it clear that I'm not  relying on Joel Smith for us to have a good 2020. As I previously noted even if he never plays seniors, for whatever reason, i am still confident we will make finals in 2020.

If I prove to be correct about Smith and he does play a role it will be icing on the cake. Not the cake.

A bit of bright-side output from our media folks today:

I enjoyed Joel's story this year.

Bit disappointed he's only looking forward to 24 games next year, though. Perhaps, with his record, he's expecting 3 games' worth of niggles through the H&A?

Good bump. I'm excited with what can bring to the table next year. If, and I know it's a big if, he can keep his body fit and healthy and have a big preseason he can become a vital cog in our lineup. 2023 was a breakout year for him.

One of the better stories for the Dees this year.

And congrats to him and his partner on the birth of their child

Looking forward to a big preseason from Joel and continued success in 2024

Smith doesn’t get enough credit for his semi final performance. Kicked 3.0 whenever everyone else was kicking behinds for fun.

Will be interesting to see if he’s a part of our forward line in round 1.

Ain’t nobody got time for good news stories. Read the room MFC social media team 😂

We miss Smith, even when he was hobbling around against Brisbane down at Casey he was our most dangerous forward.

Good call, great call, excellent call.

Really glad for Joel that he got the oppertunity and produced this season.  Was a really bright spark up forward to look to for the future.

Thought he had some great games down back pinch hitting as the sub - that Brisbane game in particular.  Provided really strong contest, marking, defensive tackling, but then some good run off half back as well.

A bit hit and miss as a forward, but more often than not, provided a really good aerial contest that others failed to give.  His marking on a lead and goal kicking look pretty rock so solid too.

Love seeing him in the 29.  Would be great to see him pull down some massive hangers like his old man - I reckon he's got it in him.

Great news and cool interview.

He seems to have found his niche as a tallish hybrid forward - whether he retains that role will depend a bit on who else comes on in 2024, and who else we may pick up.

He needs another 58 games to get to the century in case he has a son sometime who wants to follow dad and grandpa in the R&B.    27 x 2 over the next two years and at least a few the following year will do it.

Agree with Timothy RAB's disappointment that he isn't expecting to play the full 27 next year 🙂

Surely if he knocks up the ton, his daughter would qualify for our AFLW team?

She has already qualified - fathers only need to have played one game for their daughter to qualify

I strangely remember that post you made about Smith back in 2019.

I certainly remember the Brisbane pre season game where Smith went bananas on 1 leg.
