2018 Player Reviews: # 20 Corey Maynard

It's watching him at training, at Casey and at AFL level.

It comes to me a bit quicker, chap.

I grew up with the game.

Saty knows less about footy than my German cousin who lives in Hamburg, and I dont even have a German cousin who lives in Hamburg.

So that's based on 2 games at AFL level, seriously, and 'lacks polish'

It's irrefutable that is true, seriously.

""Corey displays all the characteristics we want in a Melbourne player"

Mahoney's comments obviously reflect the view of the coaching staff.

You would think they may have an idea.

Its hard to base an opinion on 2 senior games. When I watched him he looked a bit slow, but the coaching staff obviously see potential in the guy.

Seriously tough.  He was great in the 2017 Casey losing grand final.

Lacks too much polish for me at AFL level, but he's handy depth.

I think that's the game Plapp said it was the most dominant game he's ever seen a player play. Or words to that effect. Hope he stays fit for 2019, another step up for us.

This blokes a weapon get outa his way !

One season is a long time in a fast developing team.  Our R1 starting midfield was Jones, Oliver, Maynard.  Viney injured, Bradshaw doing detention at Casey and Harmes a fringe flanker.  Posters here lamented that if Tyson was selected ahead of Maynard we would have won - quite possible, but now he's gone.

There's a massive love affair for VDB here and I'm a big fan of his re-signing.  Maynard is a pretty similar player.

Potentially a great in and under mid field ball winner & pressure player (when we dont have the ball...tackling etc).

Jury out on the disposal side at this point.  If he improves on that in a big way this year he just might get himself a regular place with some luck.

Serious upside in the offing if he does.

I hear he is hard at it but in the 2 games he has played I saw how his disposal was not too good.

He got rag-dolled by Mummy in one of those games so that would stop anybody - he fixed Maxy up there one time too.

So -  he hasn't had a real chance to show us what he's got. If the coaches want to keep him that's good enough for me.

So...anyway, moving on.

Corey looks to be handy backup.

...he needs to work on areas of his game craft not just disposal skills.

I hope they had him watching a lot of footy during his rehab as he gets caught out of position a bit.

Given that he's relatively new to the sport at this kind of level, despite his age, he probably still has a bit of improvement left in him.

Yep.

It's true of the whole team as well. I expect in the draft we will target players with excellent disposal skills, with some pace who can play a link, outside role. Obviously don't grow on trees so the recruiting team will have to show their talent spotting skills again.

Maynard fits the goody mould, he's a Melbourne person. Hard at it, fierce,  team first and super competitive. But he does indeed lack polish, specifically with his kicking. He's not overly quick either.

You'd think he is competing with Oliver, Brayshaw and viney as an inside mid. So up against it. But like the selection of smith goody has shown a preparedness to back such players in so he will get his chance.

Apetite for the contest will continue to be criteria #1, 2 and 3.
