Murray Bushrangers mid whose stocks have risen throughout the year. Nightmare had him as a late pick in his May player focus but now expected to go around our picks in the 20’s http://www.espn.com/afl/story/_/id/23514891/afl-draft-chris-doerre-knightmare-contested-midfielders-rise

A good size at 188cm and 86kg he tested very well at the  draft combine winning the standing jump, top 5 placing in left and right running jump, 9th in the agility and 7th in the yo yo.

As @spirit of norm smith said in the Bailey Williams thread Ely does have a touch of the Clayton Oliver’s about him. I know it counts for little but he also just looks like a footballer. Worth considering

I had a look at his highlights and would be happy if we chose him, he's like a bull, he just goes after the ball. He's a built like brick shelter shed, so he's be ready to play from day one.

I think if he is available we should take him.

A great addition to our number one attribute.

I want us to draft the best available, highly skilled outside mid who has some toe, right now we have Salem and KK and then the cupboard is bare

I do agree that we require a player or three as you described, but what if we loose a few inside beasts to injury and our whole game plan is void because we dont have depth , Im hoping we can address  both issues  the more the merrier!

I don't see much that looks like Oliver in that highlights video. Actually reminds me of Harmes - good size and athleticism but skills need some polishing. The handballs in to the ground are worrying.

There's actually a few nice Bedford highlights in that video where he's moving smoothly through traffic.

Yeah, I don't like commenting on a player based on a solitary YouTube video, but he reminded me more of Harmes with a quick burst of speed. Looks rough, but could well translate those ball-winning attributes to the big time.

Ely Smith is a contested beast. Reminds me of Clayton Oliver.

Strong. Good pace. Ready to go. Contested ball king.

Uses handball 75% of time to distribute.

Kicking ok but mainly distance.  Not silky skilled like a Bailey Smith or Zac Butters.

If we get him, wow.  Never lose the clearances. But I think he will got top 15-19 with Crows, Lions or Giants selections.

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
