Paperbags will guarantee it

Bolton struggles to get his message across to the players, his club or the AFL in general.

Perhaps he should get himself a milk crate.

The rejection of the pp is a good sign.  It is the second time this year the AFL Commission have turned down an AFL Admin proposal.  The first was when Gill had set up a fanfare press conf to announce the GF would be a twilight game only to have the Commission knock it on the head.

The reason for knocking back the pp's is:  "...Carlton have got 18 first-round picks and they'll get the No.1 pick again this year.  "Gold Coast have got 15 first-round picks on their list and they're going to get picks two and 15 this year if Tom Lynch goes to another club...they'll get pick three..."

Well hello, as if blind freddy couldn't see that in advance

When combined with the Commission's stance on pokies this is good progress with some accountability for Gill and Co.  When Fitzpatrick was head of the Commission it just rubber stamped what Gil and Co wanted (especially if it helped Carlton).

They're effectively getting 2 second round picks! It's just disguised.

They might get a Tim Kelly and a Bayley Fritsch.

Or a Mitch Hannan and Tom Stewart.

This isn't progress at all.

or they might get jimmy toumpas and shane valenti...

look, the likelihood is that the carlton access to shane mcadam will go to adelaide along with their second round pick to prise out mcgovern

gc17 will pick grigg, who gets another go at an afl career

Don't care what they get as long as it isn't a high priority pick.

The truth is even if either side got pick 1 in the draft, would that improve their on-field performance next year?  As Gil and co have noted Carlton have 18 first round picks in their side already!  One more will not get them off the bottom.

To do so you have to trade to get multiple high picks over a couple of years...just like we did.  That way you have a group of young skilled players coming through together.

If Carlton want to do that, then put Cripps on the table, and start putting a team together with what he can attract.

Terry Wallace has revealed his top 10 players outside the AFL system who clubs should consider recruiting in this year’s draft. I think he erred in omitting Sam Collins of Werribee who I would rank ahead of anyone on this list.

Plough’s top 10 potential draftees outside the AFL system

Plough’s top 10 state level players (not in any order):

Mitch Grigg (Norwood/SANFL)
Shane McAdam (Sturt/SANFL)
Josh Clayton (Southport/NEAFL)
Michael Gibbons (Williamstown/VFL)
Ryan Gilmore (Townsville/Gold Coast Academy)
Josh Corbett (Werribee/VFL)
Sam Sturt (Peninsula Grammar/Victoria)
Jye Bolton (Claremont/WAFL)
Jordan Morrissey (County Carlow/Ireland)
Will Hayes (Footscary/VFL)

... and there are a couple of handy players at Casey who he has overlooked.

Carlton and Gold Coast have used their mature age entitlements with the former trading theirs and GCS keeping them.

McAdam is off to Adelaide while the Suns have taken Corbett.

Nathan Krueger (South Adelaide) is off to the Cats. Chris Burgess (West Adelaide) and Sam Collins (Werribee) also join Gold Coast.

There are still others around worth consideration.

So Carlton trade their 2 picks to Adelaide and Geelong respectively for more ND picks and GC used their 3 picks on players?

All credit to Gold Coast and Dew!

AFL website journalist Ben Guthrie has produced his listing on players within SANFL, VFL, NEAFL and WAFL that could be drafted.

Noted Demons could be interested in Hayden McLean, 19 yo from Sandringham VFL and previously Sandringham Dragons U18s. Definitely one to consider if we miss out on drafting in Bailey Williams.

McLean was unlucky not to get drafted in 2017.  Forward ruckman who provides ruck relief.  Could be a very handy backup for Weid/Tmcd. I think Dees offer him a good chance to develop in AFL environment and maybe a few games in 2019.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
