good point about bernie's decision to not mark (no cats around) but punch ball fwd with 40secs on clock after last cats kickin. could have milked clock for 30sec - game over

    Yeah I missed it too, until I saw the replay of it a couple of nights ago and Tom Mc telling the umpire about Gawn bleeding, fair to say they all went it to panic mode.

    yeah, so many mistakes and lack of common sense in those last 2 minutes

    the more i think of those last 2 minutes it seemed like we played as though we were points DOWN rather than points UP

    It was the older guys who let us down Vince here, Jones' lazy chase, Lewis' letting his opponent go, TMac with Gawn incident. Unbelievable and you wouldn't expect that to ever happen. The kids are doing fine.

    and i can think of a lot of other bad tactics but i won't list them as it just depresses me and i want a good sleep tonight

    Frost coming towards the wing instead of tracking Hawkins through the middle.

    The whole last few minutes were atrocious. In the time Gawn went off, the leaders should have had time to get things set up right and convey what needed to be done.

    The whole last quarter was a nightmare but especially the last couple of minutes. It is one of the worst losses I have seen.

    Not double teaming Hawkins aka playing with a spare after he kicked 2 in a row was a game changer. Gave Hawkins incredible confidence leading into wide open spaces, gave them complete momentum.

    I saw him bleeding and was hoping to hell the umps didn't notice.

    I've been to training a number of times over the last 12 mths and this is clearly not practiced. Defenders on forwards at the end of training (exhaustion) with 2 points up or down and heap the pressure on them with a real countdown clock. It's easy to talk about what went wrong, but they also need to practice.

    It's not like we haven't been in these situations in real games ?

    You can't practice that sort of intensity.
    It comes down to plain football smarts, and we're the dumbest club out there.

    Sure you can. Include different mixes to the situation each week, eg. Near the boundary, or from kick out, or goal needed from centre bounce with 30 sec left, or flooding the backline. Then the coaches give feedback on the spot. Use countdown clock with hooter siren

    at the end we should have ensured we had 2 extra defenders than they had back. 2 sweepers and the rest man on man (and i mean manon on man).

    hogan or tmac should have dropped back.  what the hell was spargo doing dropping back

    School boy stuff really,  a years worth of learning in 2 minutes, lets hope we learn from all our mistakes from that last quarter.

    Players, Coaches and everyone involved with the MFC.

    Add to that list of failings - and all of orhers - you can add jkh coming off with 90 seconds to go. As soon as omac kicked to trac he should have turned and spinted to give an option. In the centre. Would have been impossible for cats  to man him up.

    Cant blame him as he wouldn't have felt authorized to make that call (you'd hope a senior player would) but rhw eunner or benxh should have told him to do it.

    In any case why take him off wirh only 90 seconds to go and leave us one down?

    That's probably theory.
    Things they'll talk about in meetings.

    As I said , you cannot train with that sort of intensity.
    Mentally or physically.

    Or maybe you can, but they decided to skip the training incase of injury.

    The great players want the ball in that situation.
    The not so good ones don't want the ball anywhere near them.

    I agree it is difficult to replicate the intensity of a match but thwy can - and do - practice that sceario. So when the times comes they don't have to think. Just do what  they have practised. The smart players know when to deviate from the team method.

    As i have noted clock management is a critical element in bbal and at the elte level run last minurte scearios all rhe time.

    Remember stkilda beating us with a goal in literally the dying seconds of the game a couple of a seasons ago, I distinctly remember the club talk of the learnings from that game. They were able to demonstrate the ‘learnings ‘ and protect their narrow lead shortly after, with that amazing win over west coast in Perth -tommy Mac kicking that miraculous goal over his head. Remember him not stopping to celebrate but instructing team mates demonstratively, what to do to protect the narrow lead.

    Lets face it , they cannot hit enough targets to run a clock down anyway.
    So we kick torps in hope instead.

      The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

      Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds. 
      This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
