Like the Ins and outs,   hope Garlett gets his mojo back   and I think Petracca is very lucky that 5 changes would have seemed like panic stations.   Go Dees       fingers and legs crossed

I think u can add Melksham, Lewis, ANB & Jones 2 that list.

Why can't a backman go in as your second ruck?

Most teams have a tall forward that goes in and try to catch sides out but going smaller up forward whilst ruckman rest usually on the bench.

Frost to ruck when the tall forward goes in, this keeps your forward structure.

The Ins, we picked players based on where we are playing and that is good.  Hopefully Kent has a ripping game at Casey next week, a forward line that has Spargo/Garlett/Kent it what we need

Good thing you guys aren't the FD, Wagner has played just 28 games, let's judge him at 50 , if he gets there.

A few muddled mis-matches through the mid field early in the first quarter cost us one or two goals (like Hogan on Ablett where Ablett lost Hogan easily and ran into half forward at one point for the easy receive and goal) and the match against the Cats.  Maynard eventually went to Ablett for a short period mid way through the first and at least prevented him from causing any major damage while he was on.  Admittedly Maynard a big work in progress, especially kicking skills and lacks pace but his work rate / effort is there along with, contested/clearances and tackling.  The hip issue obviously a big set back.

Maynard is a delist.  We have 15 of his type, even if he does learn how to play footy.

So what you are saying is that you and others on this site know more than the football department, yeah sure pal.

Hahaha just because you're in the football department doesn't mean you're any good.  Have you thought that every MFC Football Department over the last 12 years have known what they were doing, because they must if they spend so much time with the players?   Spose Neeld knew best too did he?

Goodwin's selection mistakes have cost us 3 games this year.  Blind freddy could see Maynard and Wagner did nothing in the pre-season to justify a game against Geelong in what was an 8 point game.  The teams we selected against Port and St Kilda have been the biggest, slowest sides you could select, and to not play a quick crumbing forward when Richmond play a dozen of them raises some serious questions over the football department.

Brilliant. I think this could have some mileage and become a game time ground entrance innovation. Players come onto the ground with the masks of their favourite GoT character donned. Or else, splashed across the banner.

Side 1: Frosty's namesake Night King.

Side 2: a combo "lower your eyes" and "don't be lazy" in font Comic Sans just to up the ante on the crazy

Whos John Snow??

I can't understand how jeffy gets a game on the back of his vfl form. Watched tge second half last week and his effort was sub standard.

Squibbed at least two contests big time as well.

Sends a strange message to players like bugg who bust a gut week in wdek out.

Can't understand what people see in Bugg. He gets a bit of footy but that's where it ends for mine. He's mostly wasteful in front of goal when it matters and simply speaking is certainly not in our best 22. He's not even in my best 30. He lost me when he made a decision to break someones jaw when they weren't looking. He can rot away in the VFL for the rest of his career for all I care because, aside from being a coward of a bloke, he simply isn't that good. He sits somewhere in between a good VFL player and a serviceable AFL player.

At some point you have to strike a balance between rewarding effort and bringing in players with actual ability and more upside. Having a team full of people that try real hard at VFL level won't get us anywhere. At some point we need to bring in genuine ability. When Jeffy gets going we are a 2-3 goal better team. Bugg does not offer that whatsoever.

I dunno, which player likes a bit of cave s3xy times with the allegedly feral free folk or having his lady fire arrows at him.

Or else burying himself under piles of dead bodies (aka opposition "stacks on" players). I'm not sure who I could see walking onto the ground with an ermine cloak. None of them are brooding enough.

S

All true,  but hes better at AFL level than VFL level and we are desperate for speed and a small forward.

I wasn't advocating he be picked. Just that he puts in and jeffy has not at the VFL level.

I'm guessing jeffy was dropped because he was not putting enough forward pressure on - and his lack of goals would not have helped. From all reports his pressure in the VFL did not improve and he kicked few goals. So how does he get a gig?

Personally i like him in the side but as i say it sends a strange message to all players.  The message is usually get dropped, go back and work on the reasons and fight your way back. Look at how Vince played last week. Instrumental in the Casey win. Picking a player who coasts at VFL after being dropped contradicts that message.

And on another note i have to say calling Bugg a coward is well uncalled for.

You should change your username to Petraccaslack, thoughts?

Agree with that. Also he is the sort of player who plays better in the seniors than in lower levels. Which makes it strange why they dropped him in the first place. I guess there could have been other issues at play that lead to him being dropped

I'm backing him in to finish the year strong as we make the finals.   Yeah hes in a poor patch of form but lets not forget hes played only 52 games and hes 22.

Definitely needs to improve his tank this offseason though.

Earn your place in the team with good form does not apply any more now that Garlett has been selected. If the game was not in Darwin he would not be there. Everybody should know the reason why and it is not good form.

Not arguing that WJ.  Just saying what happened in part of the first quarter of the Cats match that cost us a few goals and quite possibly the match.

I can definitely see why people are peeved at this, it sure does raise some eyebrows and I wonder what sort of message it sends to others, even Petty v Frost and Keilty etc, there have been a few examples this year.

I for one am in the we need Garlett camp and I hope he rips it up and kicks a bag, we are a better side with him in. A bad season for Garlett may be 30-35 goals, I can take his bad traits as he hits the scoreboard and is a match winner.

What would you call a bloke that breaks someone's jaw with a punch when they aren't looking? Coward is one of the nicer words I'd use

Regards Jeffy. A surprising selection to say the least.

It's often put that players are sent back to work on areas and refine their role. Maybe Jeff has. It might just not appear it to us.

Maybe it's last chance saloon ?

Maybe the FD is simply desperate for someone to do something ....other than play Superman in the fwd line ?

Maybe it's all of the above ?

Barring injury to Tracc, Jones i can't see him returning either KM.  The only spot i can see him in is Melk's if he doesn't lift (or out injured).

Spargo one side and Jeffy on the other with big bodies of Hulk and T-Mac crashing and contesting.  Tasty pickings for the speedy craftwork of an AFL quality crumber and finisher Bz!  He ain't bad over the first 10 meters and finding space on the lead either.  Only issue here is, is there anyone other than Fritsch capable of hitting?  Maybe Stretch & Melk (in horrible form though).

FD will no doubt want him to bring the defensive stuff but 2 to 3 goals along with some ground ball clean ups and creative involvements nearer the goal face would probably get him a solid pass!

Sure it was a cowardly action. The distinction i'd make is as far as i am aware it is the only time he has he has hit someone like that. If he does it gain i'll be the first to agree he is coward

Leigh Matthews was a coward.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
