Before committing on Joel Smith , I’d give Harrison Petty a shot because he looks the goods at vfl .

Yes Ok VFL quite a few clicks down the dial , but he looked clean with ball in hand and had that sense of timing , not  rushing it and thougtful approach , and reads the game well .

I thought he played exceptionally well. Made a few errors, but il cop them when hes a 4th gamer and trying to take risks. Absolutely loved his desperate smother which resulted in a goal for us.

With more experience I reckon he'll become a handy defender.

Thought his aggression and physicality was great.  He was looking very promising last year before his injury and looked like he could be very handy down back going forward.

If we were looking to add more height to the backline, I’d like to see Smith retained for a few more matches to see how he gels.

Well we didn't have options. OMac off the ground, Pederson required in the ruck for quite some time

Poor selection= poor coaching. Too short/slow in the backline all day.

I thought he played well, but then the ball was down there s fair bit, but it sure was not his fault we lost,

I didn't mind Smith's game overall, but he is clearly not a direct replacement for Lever as a genuine second tall defender.

I gather he has been playing as third or fourth defender at Casey, so why the fork would you expect him to play as second defender at AFL level?

I'm more than happy for him to replace Vince or Lewis on a flank, with Frost to slot in at CHB.

Smith showed again that he's AFL quality, but he'll benefit from being the third tall.

The sooner Petty is equipped to play AFL the better and, as mentioned by the poster above, Smith can replace Vince.

Yup more games into Smith please!

He's have to be one of the most athletic players I've seen for quite a while. Has all the makings of a good backman.

God your a clown Biff

Didn't mind Smith. He certainly didn't lower his colours. He shouldn't be held to the same expectations as those others who put in a dud performance. A 4th gamer shouldn't be coming in with the expectation to dominate.

Would be leaving him in the side to give him 3 weeks in a row. If after the 3rd game he can't adapt then maybe look at someone else.

Must have been hard to learn how to spell when you were sniffing paint at school.

Options, Biff?

And do we have any update on Oscar’s injury?

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
