AFL.com.au Mid Season AA Team

Funny how most commentators who put these out, including Slobbo, justify not putting Gawn and Grundy in their team because no teams play with 2 rucks (except top of the ladder West Coast), but then put Gray, Higgins and Caddy in the one team - not saying their not good players, but forward pressure is such a big part of today's game, and those guys aren't top notch in that area. Also no lock down defender either, so just come out and say we're picking the best 22 and putting them where we can fit them, rather than how a team would actually line up.

Out Dusty in B. Grundy.

I think a lot of the media pundits are picking Dusty based on 2017 form.

They keep hanging their hat on the fact he in no. 1 for score involvements,  Fact is there are far better performed midfielders than him this year.

AA lost its shine for me last year when Oliver wasn't even in the squad despite being top 5 in almost every category a midfielder's performance is measured.

Don't get too comfortable seeing Clarry in there, they still need to find room for Selwood, Dangerfield and Ablett.

There is nothing more certain than the 'Holy Trinity' featuring in the AA team.

No Tmac, ok I get it's based on 9 rounds but really?

And 5 Meth Coke (ohhh how I love the Demonlanders' nick names)

Way better than Slobbos train wreck of a team.

Hes a good samaritan making every other journo look like experts.    So selfless.

Having said that 5 Eagles is ridiculous, and Jetta robbed again.

Also, Darling will be replaced by T Mac in the 2nd half o the season.

Cripps should be in there ahead of Martin.

I have no idea why Dusty is getting so much love.  Is he leading any categories this year?  Is he having a consistent impact on games?  I feel like he's had a good year but he hasn't even gotten close to matching last season.

Pending on Darling's form/fitness in the second half of the season, I think TMac is a strong case to make the final side based on his current form. Hibberd made the AA squad last year after missing the first 4 or 5 games so McDonald is still every bit as likely.

Also, Dusty getting the nod over a Cripps or Coniglio is laughable.

A balanced “B” side including very good role players for every position would easily beat a best 22 star studded side.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
