It just looks like Goodwin is sticking with ANB due to his effort, Goodwin is hopeful nhbfor it to click. But it’s clear he’s currently bereft if confidence, his stats are well down on last year and a defensive forward or tagger doesn’t average 2 tackles and bugger all 1%’s for the year if he’s doing the right thing. Seems odd to me. Garlett could get the same stats and kick 4-5 goals. Anyway, is what it is, hope Goodwin isn’t playing favourites...

I think a problem for many, certainly myself , is Ive never really seen much of Nibbler to suggest he's that good a footballer. He's a standout athlete...playing in an elite level football team, but that and of itself does not qualify anyone as a good footballer.

He does a few cameo footy things from time to time but in the main fluffs things as you might imagine a fish out of water to do.

Good football teams are made up of .... strangely enough....good footballers.

Good footballers possess that 'good footy brain' and have football skills.

You can get away without these so much at lesser levels. If we as a club want to experience success. 

Build a FOOTBALL team.   Not an athletics club. 

I have finally seen the St Kilda game for the first time. I can't understand why people think Salem should have come in for ANB. They play completely different roles. Salem replaces Hunt because Hunt is the worst performing small defender and Salem will play that role. When Viney returns, then ANB might go out of the side. But - subject to this weekend's performance -  even then, I think ANB's spot in the side is safer than Hannan's.

Really looking fwd to Oskar Baker playing a game in the AFL team. At the same time, I'd reckon that Garlett has learnt of his form lapse and would have been working towards some form of redemption and awareness-raising - he 'aint a meathead, after all. Tough call, but I'd still prefer a more 'desparate' Garlett at this game and point of time. OB in when Viney resumes and ANB is dropped.

These questions are valid, Beelzebub, and these are also becoming monotonous for a handful of spritely younger players.

I just wonder that in the transfer of the coaching mantras and game plans for 'style' of game, and in reference to what Goodwin continuously states post-match no matter what the result (eg: '...we still have a lot of work to do...'), I just wonder if the essential skills of football are being overlooked as a coaching and training inclusion - particularly for these players.

The repetition comes from skills such as kicking, passing by foot and hand, finding space and moving to it as a fast break opportunity, inside and outside linkages, 'long-bombing', etc, etc, without being fully inclusive. 

Players are recruited from tender ages and varied ranges of experience these days. Their prior exposure to the footy basics may not and from observation, certainly is not advanced, equal and/or representative of the new demands of the game at AFL level. Core skills practices and team utilisation of such skills sets are critical to AFL footballing success. We team up players with noticeable mixed bags of these core skills whereas some centralisation of skill sets needs to be addressed, first. Idiosynchratic footballers will also struggle in this team game. This is not gospel, this is just an opinion....

Salem comes in for his kicking, and his focus, footy nous.

This week the two teams will be playing for the Warnock Bowl.

Nice weekend to be playing in Brisbane.

If travel is managed properly as I am sure it will be it's probably better than paying on a heavy ground in Melbourne.

BTW that Docklands surface looks atrocious.... how can it be so bad after only 6 rounds ? Surely they schedule a turf replacement for March or thereabouts

Almost deserves a thread of its own but we need to talk at some stage about who and how we will be replacing Vince and Lewis. For one or both it will definitely happen this year or next. Is Oskar a candidate .. not sure. Should we be trialling Stretch in that role at VFL level.

A big chunk of experience to replace but I would like to think the boys at VFL level have their eyes on these spots.

I really don’t get people’s dislike for Harmes. Finds the footy, tackles, pressures, can take a contested mark, often provides great link play and run, sometimes explosive. Does he get caught sometimes? Sure, but at least he’s not just hand balling to someone else under pressure. Does he miss targets, sometimes, but I’d suggest not as much as many others in the comp. He’s not on the fringe in my eyes.

I get the swap of Hunt for Salem if it’s for a half back role. Hunt was better last week, but still underwhelming.

Having said that, I also struggle with ANB because I can’t get past seeing him shirk the contest TWICE two weeks ago. Screamed ‘drag him right now’ at the TV during the game, so he’s got a bit to do to win me back.

I don't think Hunt's been quite the same since the Adelaide game where he knocked himself out last year.

If that hard running and spread has some AFL level finishing on the end of it i agree DV.  When it doesn't it all looks good but the end result often ends in a turnover and ball being switched or sent back over head straight down the other end.  Sometimes for an easy joe-the-goose or a shot at goal.  Hunt a good example of this of late.  He will come back but needs to start finding more options by hand and foot earlier into his running forays.  Then run on for the next one/two receive instead of trying to take on multiple tacklers. And hit a few more targets with short passes in order that the team maintains possession and he cashes in on his speed advantage More often.  The turnovers will always happen from time to time at this level.  Just needs some adjusting to his method IMO.

You could have 4 to 5 hard running / spread players on the outside.  If only one , or worse none of them, are at a decent level with finishing then all that effort/run will count for little in return.

You will also find the team will move the ball much more efficiently and more players will be encouraged to spread more often on the burst if they know they are likely to be on the receiving end of some quality ball users around them. They will also be encouraged and likely have more trust to give off to someone who uses the ball very well vs someone who regularly doesn't.  Some might call it confidence.

He's in our best 22 atmo, until we surpass him.

I think confidence will help, as it returns for him.

 

Next year, IF the AFL reduces rotations again to open the game up, we will be calling for our ANB's, and the Hunts.
